A tentative YAHOOO!
The problem seems to be caused by the card reader. Went back to older one and things are OK.
So far..... still testing
Thanks to all for the help!

Thanks for all the replies.
I have always formatted the cards in camera. Same cards have been working fine for a long while. The one new thing is THE CARD READER! At first it was fine so I didn't think of it. Will try directly out of the camera and with old card reader.

This is kinda cool in a way but rather limited! This kinda effect is all I get when I down load raw images into lightroom cc. looks fine in camera. Jpegs are OK downloaded too - why would that be? Tried lightroom 4 and Pscc and same downloaded there. Tried different SD cards same effect. Happening in both card slots. I assume it's a camera prob and will need to be sent in. Boooo!

So can you get a flatter profile and gain DR by using "highlight correction" and "shadow correction" in the movie recording settings on a K-3? If you are post processing the video is that actually useful to shoot in?

good to know about the high iso and video quality. Is 1600 borderline or truly useless?

Thanks for your replies!
my problem is that I am shooting Herons in their nests in the trees and the scene is very contrasty - there are a lot of deep shadows and the heron's heads have bright white on their sides that get blown when they turn to a profile view. If I expose to save the highlights the resulting footage is extremely dark overall and useless in that way. I am thinking now that there is nothing to do about it short of shooting raw video into a external recorder and the being able to effectively process it. I can't afford that!
Do some cameras have settings that allow shooting video with a flatter response curve that allows for more effective exposure processing? Sony A7RII?
The K-3 can't do that, right?
I think I will have to be more selective with my recordings: shoot earlier or later in the day, shoot on overcast days, etc.
any other ideas?

I am new to video using a K-3. I am spoiled by Lightroom's ability to process raw still images in terms of retrieving blown highlights and getting detail out of shadows. I have been videoing nesting Herons in a really contrasty environment and can't get really good useable footage. Lightroom does provide some exposure controls via the quick develop for video but it is not very effective. Is there another program that would work better for this? I have a Mac. Fotomagico, iMovie and PS Premier Elements seem to have similar limited ability but does one work noticeably better?
Does even an expensive program like PS Premier or Final Cut Pro offer this?
Thanks for any replies!

I have the DA 17-70 and it has worked pretty well for me, but I would like to upgrade. Wider range, WR, better AF motor, less aberrations, Same or better IQ all sounds great. But I will also use the lens as my main landscape zoom and I usually use live-view magnified focus with the 17-70 and it is frustrating because the focus throw is so short and the action is so loose (no damping) that is very difficult to use that way. For those that have tried both lenses, my question is if the 16-85 is better in this respect? I know there is no distance scale on this lens and I am not happy with that but it is not a deal breaker for me.

It has been quite a while since I've used this lens. Not that I don't like it but I have a lot of lenses! It was my favorite before I bought my F*300 - figure that one out! As I remember the Hoya rubber hood works fine. it stores in a smaller space and can be used for other lenses too cuz it has 3 positions. I can use it on all my FA primes with a step up adapter which I have for my Polarizer anyway. I don't use protective filters so I use the hood for protection. This rubber hood may not be as good for that in some situations, but might be better in some others.
Hope this helps

I recently got the K-3 and HD 1.4 and am using them with my F*300. I am blown away with the level of detail I am getting! I want to try again with a better background, a bit of flash, and get closer. Just got the "Better Beamer" for my Sigma 530 DGS and am trying to figure out HSS (never done it before and am challenged!)
The images you guys are posting are just amazing-What an inspiration!

I see there are different models with different magnification ranges. What is the practical difference, in use? Any suggestions for which one to choose?
thanks

Ooooops! Thanks Snostorm for correcting my very incorrect post. That will teach me to talk about something I haven't actually tried myself! But I am glad that I got Snostorm to make some more good comments about the use of the AFA. That is very insightful and now I am really looking forward to trying the F*300 with the AFA I just (again) acquired.
I should also state that the tests I did with the AFA and PM 1.7's were on the Tamron SP400 f4 (magnified live-view MF on my K-5). From what I read it seems that results can be very camera/lens/TC specific so my findings don't necessarily reflect how they would compare on the F*300. Also, I will come out of the closet right now and admit that I am a SPP! Yes, I am a Super Pixel Peeper and sometimes even view at 2:1. So unless someone is trying to print real big (or seriously crop) they would never notice what I called a "noticeable " difference between the two. I think the other advantages Snostorm described could make a bigger difference.
I have only been birding a few months now but there have been a number of occasions when the screw drive noise definitely seemed to scare away birds, and I have to say that it seriously bothers me. For me, being out in nature is kinda a meditative experience and I find the full-racking screw drive racket very jarring. I was thinking about trading it for a FA*300 or even splurging for a DA*, but maybe the AFA will solve that problem.

I use my K-5 with the F*300 and Promaster 1.7 and am very happy with the results. I would not use the AFA 1.7 with that lens cuz there is no full-time manual focusing. You would constantly be shifting from AF to MF, both on the lens AND on the body, and then back again each time the limited AF zone on the AFA was exceeded. It is a bit of a pain as it is with the PM 1.7 When I want to reset the focus into the distance to prevent full-racking (so as not to scare away birds)
In tests with two different AFA 1.7s I found the PM 1.7 was noticeably sharper.

nice sharp shots Marcus! Interesting bokeh on first one. How difficult is the MF for you? I've heard mirror lenses are tougher that way

It must have known my new HD 1.4 is arriving shortly! There could be stiff competition for use with my F*300. Shot 3 action sequences and all came out real good but I had good lighting and contrasty subjects.
I am pretty blessed here as migrating water birds visit my marina regularly (I shoot right off my boat) and GBHs have nested in trees less than 200 yards away. I can look out my hatch and see if they are there!
Then I go to work in the other marina where a resident Loon is a real ham and I can photo him right off that boat!
