Just out of curiosity does this forum automatically change Sony to $$$ony or is it just some members that write that :o

edit - just read my own post, it's the latter.

As far as I'm aware there haven't been any fines for breaches of GDPR yet - but 11 million people (even if only 10% are in the EU) could be bad.

To be honest, these companies (all of them) need to get the maximum fines for these things, it's p*ss poor that security is such a low priority today. Fine them all and fine them hard.

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

Not really related, but I watched their Wanderlust series of videos over the weekend and was surprised to see them using a Pentax K1 24-70 / 70-200. Though they didn't comment on them I don't think.

I have a K5ii and also a GX20 (K20D) that I no longer use.

I prefer the K5ii for everything, except for the body - the K10D/20D design was perfect for me.

Northrup on DSLRs, Mirrorless and especially Lens Mounts

I watched that video and thought it was quite obvious it was just an opinion piece.

To be fair he said that the Pentax mount wouldn't last another 5 years and gave his reasons for it - even if we don't agree with him it's not an outrageous opinion. Personally I think it's more likely it will be sold on again, but that's just my opinion.

He was wrong when he said Pentax had already ditched it but again, to someone that doesn't use Pentax it's an easy conclusion to come to when you see the lack of new glass, bodies and investment.

Fro mocks Pentax

If you watch his channel enough you'd realise he mocks everyone (including Nikon which is what he shoots).

Obviously you'd have to like his personality enough to watch him regularly - personally I quite like him and have followed him for the past 11 years on YT and have learnt lots from his videos, though he did more tutorial videos in the past (photography and Lr) while now he seems to do more camera reviews, news, etc.

Just don't take it too seriously and you might enjoy it.

I have a K5ii and I'm very happy with it for the things I used to take pictures of. If I were going on holiday tomorrow I would still be very happy to take it. However over the past 18 months or so my needs (and therefore wants! :D) have changed (my wife started a business and we use our photo's for web site and advertising, etc).

I never bought a K3 / K3ii because I didn't feel they offered much over what I had and I feel the same regarding the KP. The K1 might be more suitable but as the majority of my glass is for crop sensor it's like buying into a new system anyway so I suspect I will buy into a second system to get what I don't have now and start migrating over to it in time.

Very true, you might wait a year and they still won't release what you want so if it's available elsewhere I'd say no point in waiting.

Pentax are almost 100% reliant on SRS selling their stuff in the UK. Once they decide it is no longer viable Pentax are dead in the UK.

There are other sellers before you all jump on me, but no one does nearly as much for Pentax as those guys. Hopefully when all the UK Pentax'ers go to another brand in the next year or two they will still buy from SRS.

I don't work for them, etc ....

I just tried it with a raw file from my Sony RX100 and get the same black image so that suggests it's a hardware / Windows 10 / Lr issue rather than Pentax issue.

Maybe, to be honest I'm not that bothered, just thought I'd try it as you were all talking about it.

I have a nVidia GeForce GT730, it's not the latest and greatest but I don't play games and the PC runs fine for photo and video editing.

Just installed the latest drivers but no change :hmm:

I've had both the Sigma 17-70 (mark 1 f2.8 - f4.5) and now the Pentax 16-85 and had great images (to me) with both of them. I like the silent focus, WR and extra range of the Pentax, but feel the IQ of the Sigma superior, especially the colours.

However there is very little in it so and would happily recommend either.

K3ii replacement

Sorry for the selective posting but I keep reading this statement, but the next Pentax should be as good as a camera released 3 years ago (January 2016). The competition are catching Pentax at all the good stuff they do, but Pentax are falling further behind in the areas they were never good at to start with (auto focus in this case).

Budget isn't an excuse for being stagnant (edit - actually it is, but then they should pack up and go home).

I have a K5ii and haven't been tempted to upgrade to any of the more recent Pentax cameras though I will be tempted by the K3ii replacement. I haven't used the KS-2 to compare it to though.

Thank you for the write up.

tbh the most disappointing thing for me in that was the Sigma response - personally I've always like their lenses, maybe even more than the Pentax lenses (don't shoot me) - better colours and sharper but missing weather sealing and I do like the quick shift on the Pentax lenses. If the 'internet' and it's reviews didn't exist I would pick a Sigma over any other brand any day.

Regardless of that, I am happy with my existing lenses - all I want is a body that has better auto focus. I want to be able to track animals and get 8 out 10 in focus and not bin 8 out of 10 like I do with my K5ii. I've never believed that any of the more recent cameras would give me anymore than a minor update on that. If I could have one 'wish' - I would want them to go back to the K10d body (I realise this won't happen, but anything smaller is poor show).

This sounds like I'm knocking Pentax and I guess it is - but for 50% of the photo's I take I love them and absolutely wouldn't want another brand. But the 50% I shoot on holiday or as landscape isn't the the other 50% where I'm shooting fast moving pets that (I) need continous AF or now that I'm attempting to make video.

I just had a flash back to when I had a Samsung GX20 and Pentax added video to their K7 (I think) and saying 'if you want a video camera, buy a video camera' and now I'm one of those people wanting 4k! I guess 'needs' change.

I agree with you and the post you quoted but as I get older (and I'm still in my 40's!) I am starting to need more assistance from the technology so better auto focus is becoming more important to me as my eyes are deteriorating (which seems to be happening at an alarming rate!!).

Although I've looked at other brands in the past there has never been a big enough reason to move, but since Sony's announcement that their eye AF will work on animals in the near future (most of my shots are pets) that does seem a big draw. I'm not expecting that from Pentax, but I would like them to be as good as the Nikons from 5 years ago.
