Most of your clients aren't going to be pixel peepers, I've gotten through a wedding or two with an panasonic lumix g1 when my k3 was getting repaired. At the end of the day the pics you consider "meh" may very well look amazing to the client. The K-30 will be fine with a good flash and a few fast primes.

Budget usually, surely if he was loaded he'd have the best slr possible already rather than pushing on with an outdated one.

What exactly makes it painful to use? If it's something feature related then an upgrade may be needed but if it's an IQ problem I'd just get a better lens. Get a good 1.4 lens and stay below iso 800 and you'd be hard struck seeing much of a difference between the newer pentax high mp sensors and the old ccd 6 mp ones other than resolution of course.

Both will give good results with 1.8 or faster lens.

I recently bought the re-branded ist dl2, samsung gx 1l brand new for $120 lol I didn't really need another dslr but that price I couldn't resist. I'll probably just keep it as a back-up if something happen to my k3.

The margin difference in the canon models is what really surprised me lol, looks like it's best to stay away from upgrading every year.
