Portraiture | Pentax 77 1.8 vs Sigma 85 1.4 | Experiences with each?

Bobbotron: Has a great point here. For portrait work the Sigma, Tammy and the 77ltd aren't your only options. There really are a bunch of them. The 50mm makes for a great option, especially on a cropped sensor.

Sorry, I have no comparison examples. Typically I select/carry one lens or another depending on what I'm doing. The Tammy is the biggest heaviest lens I own. So if I don't think I will need to be changing focal lengths alot.. it stays home. I use the Sigma a lot more. The Sigma still is a big lens, but the tammy is waaay bigger. My preference is a lighter kit, so I may take Bobbotron's advice as well and look at the nifty fifty as an alternate to the Sigma.

I have the Sigma and the Tammy. For portraits, the Sigma is stellar. Before purchasing it I had the same concerns. I wished I had the option to rent them before I purchased. Even while I have no real regrets with the Sigma, I would say if you have the option of renting before your purchase, do so.

P-TTL on AF540 GZII - Can you disable preflash?

I have done that with a 360FGZ. In that setup I change the flash setting to "A". The flash uses its meter to determine correct exposure and you will have to tell it and fix your ISO and aperture, and working out exposure compensation gets a little tricky, but, upside is no preflash.

In my limited experience, my single take away has been be organized. Know the images you want and stick to your script as much as possible. Remember, she's pregnant, and if she is not comfortable or simply tired (which can happen really quickly)... it will show, especially if you are catching shots of her face. If you are doing a long shoot, plan to have breaks. Keeping a pleasant, relaxed shoot goes a long way.

Most of all, enjoy it. It so great when you capture that pregnant "glow"...

Why buy Pentax in 2016?

I'll admit to being swayed to take a look at Nikon. Specifically the D750 (I'm a K20D user looking at either the D750 or K3II). Recently did a shoot with it and remembered why I've stuck with Pentax and why well I still think others should consider it.
The Hyper modes the camera provides makes my shooting just that much easier. I keep my eye to the viewfinder more with my Pentax that the Nikon's and Canon's I've shot with thanks to them. Now, I am not sure if other manufacturers have mimicked the functions, but, I find the implementation in the Pentax camera bodies very well thought out.

K20D : Custom Function 10

Ahhh... thank you much. That helps a bunch. That really is a nice feature... but I get what U say... you will use it an not know that it has changed the effective value you wanna use. Still, in a pinch where it's more important to capture something it could prove useful.

Well I've promised myself to take more time and use my camera in Manual mode more. I find that Hyper program has spoiled me and I've stopped really 'thinking' about what I doing in terms of exposure. Going back to manual forces me to slow down, think then capture; I get more involved in the process and well I like that. In a month or two, I will only mount manual lenses on my cam too :D.

I'm glad to know that I do have an option on the camera to save me from myself.

Thanks for the explaination... I really do appreciate it.

I have been trying to 'understand' this function. "Auto EV Compensation". According to the manual, it sets the camera to use auto EV compensation when the correct exposure cannot be determined.

I know I'm probably being daft here. But I sincerely don't understand. Someone please help me to understand what this function will do in a practical sense. What value does it use. Can this "auto" value be adjusted or what is the auto value? When might the camera "not determine correct exposure".

I figure the answer is simple and plain, and I could be having a 'Clueless' moment... but please.. help.

Thanks

Multiple 360 FGZs

Ok.. so I figured it out. One of the flashes did not have the "slave" value set properly. You set that value by holding the "Light" button for two seconds.. then hit the Set button. This cycles the flash from "Slave 1" to "Slave 2". According to the manual... for the flash to properly operate in wireless mode for the *ist, MZ cameras the flash Should be set to "Slave 1". Use "Slave 2" for other wireless systems/Cameras.

Thanks for checking Russell... at least I realized that there was nothing with the setup. I was worried I would have had to get a 540..

Multiple 360 FGZs

I have a K20D and two 360FGZs and access to a third. I want to fire all three flashes wirelessly.

What I have tried;
1) Set the camera's on board flash to master, set the two 360s to slave, set channel 1 on both flashes. Sync the Camera to Channel 1 and set the on board to wireless mode. Set both flashes to first curtain sync. Turned them on to wireless and attempted a frame. Result: only the flash that was 'synced' with the camera and the onboard fired.

2) Same as above, Only I set the on board flash to controller. Result; only the 'synced' flash fired.

3)mounted one of the 360s on the camera hotshoe, set that flash to master. Result; both flashes fired .... I don't acutally have the third 360 to see if the mounted 360 can master two other flashes.

So... can I fire two or more 360 FGZs using the camera flash as the master/controller, or will I need to have the 540 to do this... or it is not possible to have more than one wireless flash.

If the above can be done... any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for any advice.

problem with my 540

Wow... thanks much... I wanna tell you that I totally understand... but truth is ... I am daft. I do understand the crop factor.. and I will admit that I was expecting the flash to behave like my old 500FTZ. I understood how that one worked. With my 50mm attached the the equivalent focal distance in film is 70mm and the flash displayed 70mm. The same applied for other focal lengths. That flash would step through and display the effective 35mm distance. If I am understanding you right.. what the 360FGZ does is to attempt to do is to present the focal lenght as close to actual 35 focal lenght as possible. Therefore my 50mm lens will show as 48 (the closest angle it can get to the actual 50) and 58 for my 100.

K... I sorta understand.

I do hope you're right. I'm not relishing the idea of sending my flash back... I even went to your guide today to research a new one.

Thanks much.. the help is really appreciated...

I am gonna check this.. I thought that the flash would behave similar to my 500 FTZ on the DS2. With a 50Mm the flash reports 75MM focal length.

Addtionally... I contacted Pentax, described my problem and they pointed out there is an issue with the flash...

Will keep you posted

Thanks
