My addition. I was traveling for work last week so I wasn't able to participate in the previous contest.

Windows doesn't natively support PEF/RAW files. So you'll need to download something to work with them. There are a few free options out there. Google's Picasa is a simple option for minor things like color balance etc. However if you want to do some heavy lifting in terms of PP then you'll need a more substantial solution. I use LightZone, which is free, and I like it very much. There are also several paid for/subscription based programs out there like LightRoom which will also work with your files. Hopefully you'll get a wealth of options from the other members here as well

Like everyone says, practice, practice and more practice.You need to understand what is moving on your subject relative to the movement of the panning. For my shot below the top line of the horse tended to be static so I knew that would have some level of sharpness, the rest of the horse would have some blur, the most being the legs and the background would would get motion blur from the panning. |

You are quite mistaken. I decouple AF from the shutter button. I set my f-stop and then attempt to AF on an area of the subject that falls within the focal plane using center point focus but has high contrast. Sometimes the two coincide. Once I get focus lock i then recompose and press the shutter button. Some may say it is not the most efficient way of going about things but it works for me. It is something I started to with my K100DS and my manual A50 f/2. At the advise from many here at this forum I was told that using a manual lens will greatly help a first time dSLR owner like myself at the time. It will force you to understand DOF, lens markers and how you can find "Acceptable Sharpness" within the give DOF. After figuring that out I stopped worrying so much about AF performance in low light. |

I haven't really noticed any low light autofocus problems with mine. Then again I do a lot of focus/recompose sort of things when I am shooting in low light conditions. Finding contrast in your subject will help immensely in aiding focus lock imho: |

Casual Linux user, do my PP in Windows using LightZone though. LZ is a great program, when I shoot raw I shoot in DNG and those get read fine with LZ. With Lightzone getting developer support again new camera profiles should be added as soon as they are able meaning that your K30 PEF would get native support as well.

As someone who has owned a K100DS I too remember that sensor with fondness. I remember absolutely magical captures with that camera. Maybe I have rose colored glasses of the camera because it was my first DSLR, but my only two PPG photos were taken with it.... That being said here is my contribution. I'll let you decide if it is HDR or not :)

Could brilliance = Vibrance or Luminosity?

I personally use LightZone but you should be able to attain what you want in Lightroom. After 5 or so minutes of fiddling about in LZ here is my tool stack;;
1. BW Blue Filter - Isolate the tonality of the zones I want to work with
2. Relight Tool - Blending Mode = Soft burn, Detail Bumped - defines zones with more contrast
3. ZoneMapper - Locked top zone in place compressed the bottom 14 zones to bring out the portions of the flower I want to work with
4. turn off BW filter
5. Hue/Saturation - Chose reds, adjust the ranges and bump saturation waaaaay up
6. Hue Saturation - Choose greens, adjust ranges and bump saturation waaaaay down
Result, attached. Not quite what you have in your example but if I put more time into it I think a more exact approximation could be reached.

You have disabled downloads for your photos. I would think that a saturation bump on a specific color mask would do what you are looking for. attach the bottom pic to a post where we can download them and we can all take a swag at getting the look you want
