Lack of AA adaptor

Thanks. I have two sets of rechargeable AA nimh (long storage- which I forgot to recharge on empty) and two Pentax batteries (the lithium ion batteries don't hold their charge for too long). But I forgot to charge all the batteries before we left and I left all the chargers behind.
Only an alkaline battery adaptor can help in that situation

Worthwhile amount of time is very subjective - especially when one has no power at all.

All good responses.
Regarding size - going down to AAA could have helped in that regard.
Good idea about keeping a second charger in the car. Makes sense.

Went on a five day family vacation with my K-50 and left all my battery chargers at home. Both the LiOn battery one and rechargeable AA nimh battery charger. Boy I'm glad that my camera takes alkaline batteries.
Can't really understand why Pentax left this out of later models including k-70

Great shots. He's coming to our neck of the woods in July. Other greats are also coming over though. So hard to decide...

Thanks. It was part of a series of shots on high continuous mode. I go to those matches with my children and their cousins and basically try to capture goals and header plays (which seem the toughest to capture).
It is not an easy sport to photograph that's for sure.

Been attending matches this season of a new division three club. Practicing shooting from the stands. My "goal" was to capture a goal. I finally did it!

Seems like a bummer.
Did the bad vibe from the 18-35/1.8 autofocus issues put them off of Pentax?

Thanks!!
Though the screw drive on Pentax vs. silent on sigma might also be a factor to consider now. Especially if you are filming creatures with good hearing 😎

I take my boys to see a local lower division football team from time to time. Wonderful opportunity to practice sports shooting. I usually try to get "headers" and a goal when I can.
Came pretty close here but missed the middle part of the assist and goal kick.

Sigma 18-300 review?

I saw that this lens started shipping for Pentax. Any chance of seeing an in-depth review on it soon.

Especially wondering if leaving out WR for a second - would it make sense to get this instead of 18-135 and 55-300 combination for all-in-one walk around needs.

DA 18-135mm ED DC WR What a lens!

Hi. I started with the 18-135 and then got the HD DA 55-300 WR and then got the sigma 17-50/2.8.

If I had to start today - and only considering a short zoom - I would have taken the inexpensive WR 18-55 with the kit to cover WR and put my initial funds towards the sigma 17-50/2.8.

Trying out my new Sigma 17-50/2.8 as well as new EyeFi Mobi Pro card.

Both excellent additions to my kit!

Help choosing lenses for a 1 year trip

I'm with the carry as little as possible group. If you don't want to invest in a fixed lens but high price high end camera, then take the 18-135 WR and a DA 40mm/2.8 which takes no space at all.

I'd recommend the k-50 and a AA battery adaptor. Nothing like being on a trip and able to plop in standard alkaline batteries if charged ones run out.

Isn't the presently available lighter weight sigma with HSM at motor and without the OS of more recent vintage?

Yeah. I got the DA 40 a while ago. I might sell it. It's just so small and easy to keep in the bag for those time when I go out with longer but slower zooms....

---------- Post added 11-23-15 at 11:16 PM ----------

At $20 more I probably would have taken the Pentax for the weather sealing. But the gap is now $250-300
I already have the wr 18-135 and frankly for less than $100 you can get a basic 18-55 WR kit lens. How often does it rain indoors at a kids birthday party or at a wedding to justify that price gap for weather sealing?

I pulled the trigger on it. Been looking for a while for a fast indoor zoom. This is a good price.
Pretty much decided I will stay with APS-C and thus will get lenses made for this.
If you look at the three lenses in this range - the Pentax 16-50, tamron 17-50 and sigma 17-50, the sigma makes a lot of sense at this price point. Went back and read the 3 way comparison review and the sigma HSM wins hands down now. Even taking into account the Pentax discount.

Can't wait to get it!

I agree with this. I just booked a professional photographer to photograph our child's bat mitzvah. The photographer we retained is an artistic type who sells prints and such and also does events at a somewhat higher price than standard events photographers. When I asked what equipment is used the answer I received is that all of the old Nikon full frame cameras and pro lenses were sold off and now photographs with micro four thirds - pro zoom lenses and some artistic primes. Two micro four thirds bodies.
This got me thinking - I'm going to stick with APS-C for now and enjoy lighter weight cameras and lenses. If I make any switch it will be down to micro four thirds (but will need to see an optical viewfinder first - in the sunny Middle East I still see the dust proof weather resistance and the optical viewfinder as one of pentaxs biggest advantages.

Thanks all!

I bought a used one. HD 40mm.

I have an A28/2.8. Looked at f and fa 28 but passed on it. Seemed duplicative and would prefer to wait for the 28mm autofocus lens to get upgraded a bit. (HD, quick shift, WR?, etc).

I do want to "challenge" myself. Not just zoom and auto settings as I progress. Hopefully this lens will help that.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
Since I went to dslr I find that I almost never change lenses while I am out with the camera. The lens that leaves the house on the camera in the bag is the one I shoot with.
I tried a few times with the da50/1.8 and didn't really like it. It was too narrow a FoV at times.
So if I'm going to a house party, or just taking my camera to work for the day and stuff, and not taking the whole camera bag and things, would this lens make sense?

My "range" is 28-75. I look as the 40 as being in the "middle" from my perspective.
The xs at 90-120 dollars used and the tamron/tokina at the 200-350 used will always be there

But the HD 40 brand new with three year drops and spill coverage at 340 dollars?
I couldn't take it for granted that will come again for a while....
