645Z calamity - advice sought

Last week I heard a huge crash and bang outside my front door. My immediate thought was what was that!! It was Fastway Couriers delivering something from Amazon AU.

It is hard to hear things through my front door, so the parcel was thrown from a distance. I would look towards couriers.

I have used CR Kennedy before, they are very professional, not sure how the lock down my impact repair times though. Hopefully they can do a shutter replacement in Australia.

Pentax 645z + Godox HSS

Mark is the man on this topic, as you note: Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter for Pentax (XPro-P) – Updated 11-17-18 – Mark Kitaoka Photographs

http://www.markkitaoka.com/tag/pentax-645z-hss/

The Godox XPro (P) works with the Pentax 645Z, as does the Adorama rebrand. It does with mine. I was using the Godox AD200, cannot help with other strobes, but they should if compatible with the remote: http://flashhavoc.com/godox-flash-system-overview/

Stitching panoramas of 645Z images

This can happen when the stitched tiff file is very large. Large X and Y measurements, rather than total megapixels of the file. Therefore, only some graphics programs can open the stitched file. From memory it depends on what version of tiff file the program can handle.

I found it more of an issue with stitched 645Z files, than say a stitched Canon 1DX file.

Capture One & Fuji GFX

I stopped using Capture One because it did not support the 645Z. Count me as one of those pushed away.

I am not the target market for Phase One cameras, so they just lost revenue they would otherwise have.

Flash for 645N (and Z)

Mark Kitaoka, who posts here, has done a lot of work with 3rd party strobes and flashes. He has settled on Godox (Adorama re-badges Godox as Flashpoint), and worked out how to use HSS. Mark uses a Canon 1DX and Pentax 645Z. This is a good starting point here.

The Godox AD200 and AD600 both have remote flash heads. The AD600Pro head is under development. Adorama offers the equivalent under their name, with Adorama support.

Focus stacking

The stacked DNG was the main reason I chose Helicon, plus the stack quality is very good.

As a bonus, Helicon also has a LR Plug In, if you use LR as your raw processor.

So I select images in LR, LR opens images in Helicon, stack the images and then go back to LR with the stacked image now in LR.

The feature is called Raw-in-DNG-out mode. You need Helicon Focus Pro version and have Adode's DNG converter installed. Full description with lots of details here.

My workflow is DNG to DNG as I set my 645Z to DNG format, rather than PEF.

I have used PS, Zerene and Helicon. My personal choice is Helicon focus. Very easy to use, great results and it allows me to stack multiple DNGs into a single DNG for processing.

In other words, I stack DNGs from the Pentax 645Z and Helicon gives me a single DNG at the end of the stacked image.

Stacked DNGs are roughly 2.5 times the size of a single DNG, so around 125 meg. It can vary between 120 megs to just under 150 megs, depending on the subject matter.

645z and High Speed Sync?

Mark, I noticed you are using the Godox FT16 trigger (433 Mhz), do you think HSS would also work with the newer XT16 trigger (2.4Ghz)?

If the XT16 can be used, does that mean the FTR16 units (433 Mhz) do not need to be attached to the strobes? Because the XT16 (unlike the FT16) can communicate directly with the Godox 600 and AD200. At least that is my reading of the Flashhavoc Guide on Godox triggers, but I am a novice and maybe missing something obvious, like the XT16 can only communicate with XTR16 units not directly with the AD200.

Thanks for any thoughts you have.

It would be even better if Pentax paid Godox to support Pentax cameras in their system - then the many options of the Godox world would open up for 645Z and other Pentax users.

Mark, I have been enjoying your blog over the last few weeks and what you have been doing as I learn off camera flash.

Camera was a 645Z, no film used. I did some tonal adjustments, but the skies in Australia (when use a CP filter) can often look this blue. Visitors comment on how blue the sky is. A bit of cloud makes it look even better.

I use Canon, Sony and have a Pentax 645Z which I took to NZ.

Canon users will find the transition to the Pentax easy, as Canon copied many features from Pentax back in the day. I found about 90% of the camera familiar. In 30 minutes you will be comfortable with the camera. Take the manual to look up the trickery stuff (like intervalometer).

I had no issues with two camera bags, packed with Sony & Pentax gear in NZ.

If you are in the helicopter for long periods the Pentax becomes heavy, but an hour or two here and there should not be an issue.

I have used 64GB Transcend and Lexar cards in the camera without any issues.

"So I assume if I use UHS II cards, they will just default to max UHS I speed." Correct, although only one set of my cards is UHSII.

Take the Air Safari flight out of Lake Tekapo, the plane not the helicopter. Helicopter flight out of Fox Glacier is good, select the flight that lands on the snowfields at bottom of Mt Cook. Similar flights available out of Franz Joseph.

Here is a few shots from the Pentax in NZ here.

645z Is it time for the next update?

I would like to see the Depth of field bracketing feature from the new Pentax KP in the 654Z. Focus stacking into one DNG file, yes please. KP only has 3 frames, so 5 or more would be good on 645Z. A handy enhancement for the existing body via firmware upgrade.
