With the release of the K1, I think it's time to revisit the "manual student Full Frame" idea: K1 sensor in a K-r derived body, with manual control as default, using mostly K-r derived electronics and software. Call it a "K-b" (for "K-basic"). Try to keep the price under $800.

K2 or (K2d)
K2 mkII (K2d mkII
K2 mkIII (K2d mkIII
K2 mkIV (K2d mkIV
etc.
Maybe there needs to be a name change after K2 mkXX.

Or, I'd be happy with L-X, or L-Xd

Tough choice. I liked them all. I'm going with #1 as my first choice, because I have to pick one. I'm really glad I don't have to pick a second choice.

They would NOT use "KDF." That was the Nazi abbreviation for their "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength Through Joy") organization.

The potential market for a FF 6X7 is far smaller than the market for a 35mm FF.

How many lenses do you have?

I like having at least one lens for each camera body, both film and digital, and I prefer manual focus primes. I like having enough zooms to cover the range from close, wide-angle (18 or 28mm) to very long tele (500mm- ish). So in K-mount manual focus I have 2x 35-70mm, an 80-200mm and a 75-300mm, and primes (28mm, 2x 35mm, 6x 50mm, 3x 85mm and 2x 135mm). I use the 35-70mm and the 75-300mm the most on my digital bodies. I have an 18-55 af kit lens that's usually found on my red K-r (used mostly for color photography); my black K-r is set up for BW images and manual focus (modified with a split circle focusing screen), currently it's sporting a 50mm f1.8 SMC.

I have other lenses in other types of mounts (e.g., Minolta MC/MD, Konica AR, Nikon N, Canon FD) for my film cameras and EOS for my Canon EOS film and digital bodies.

All told, probably 50 lenses, but they cover a half-dozen different mount types.

In keeping with historic names:

K2 and LX were flagship film SLRs.
Adding a "D" for "digital" or an "i" for "improved" would be appropriate (as K2-D, K2i, or LX-D, LXi).

K-2i

KMi

KXi

or

MEi

MEi Super

MXi

or

LXi

LMi

LEi

Obviously, someone in the Ricoh marketing department realized there is an underserved market between the APS-C DSLR and the MF DSLR. There should be three grades- the all-out, no-holds-barred, no-expense-spared PRO FF, the mid-range workhorse, and the entry/ProSumer grade; the entry/Prosumer priced just above the most expensive APS-C model.

Some time in the next 18 months I'll be upgrading to a full-frame dSLR. Since I have mostly PK and EOS glass, it's going to be either a Pentax or a Canon. For practical as well as sentimental reasons (I have more PK glass than EOS) I would prefer it to be a Pentax, but I won't be dreadfully sad if it's a Canon.

A film SLR feels better than a digital SLR ?

In 50 years, I'll be long dead, barring some miraculous medical breakthrough that triples lifespan. I won't care what's going to be collectible after I'm dead.

1964 was 50 years ago. What artifacts from 1964 are collectible?

Is a Kodak Instamatic "collectible?" I'd have to say no. They weren't remarkable then (NONE of them), and they made tons of them, and still today tons of them survive. What cameras from 1964 are collectible? The good ones. The ones that were made in smaller numbers because they were too expensive for the mass market. The ones that worked really well. The ones that were so good, so expensive that only professionals could afford them; and because professionals used them, most of them are used up- making them rare.

I just got my third Canon A-1. This is a camera that I lusted for 30 some years ago, but couldn't afford, so I got a Ricoh-made Sears KSX instead. The A-1 isn't difficult to find now at a decent price. It's more common and usually cheaper than an AE-1, which preceded it by a couple years. The AE-1 is a camera that was used a lot. Many A-1 owners never actually used theirs much. That's my theory, anyway.

What I would like, and still can't really afford, is a Canon F1. That's because it was a professional camera. a sturdy tool that many photographers used and used and used. Most on the market now are pretty beat up- and still command high prices. I suspect a never-used F-1 in pristine condition could probably fetch $1,000; but you'll never find one.

Which of today's cameras will be collectible in 50 years? The good ones. The ones that are made in smaller numbers because they're too expensive for the mass market. The ones that work really well. The ones that are so good, so expensive that only professionals can afford them; and because professionals use them, most of them will be used up- making them rare.

An electronic camera that's approaching 40, that probably will be collectible in 10 or 15 years' time, is the Sony Mavica, the one that recorded an analog file on a 2" video floppy.
The first digital Mavica, the one that stored images on a 3½" floppy may also be collectible shortly.

it's a little less complicated if the lens is a PK/A lens. It will have an "A" setting next to the highest aperture number (smallest aperture). Set it at "A" and all you need do is focus.

A film SLR feels better than a digital SLR ?

I have a Program Plus and an ME Super (actually, I've got 2 of each, but the other 2 have issues). Altogether, I have over a dozen working K-mount bodies by Pentax, Ricoh, Sears, and I believe I have a K-mount Chinon somewhere. I've actually just acquired a Spotmatic that's in excellent shape.

I love shooting with film. I always have, especially manual 35mm SLRs. I learned to take pictures with a Kodak Duaflex, and the 35mm SLR gave me such a wider range of shooting options.

Here's the thing: I was recently in a minor traffic accident. I stopped, she stopped, we exchanged insurance information, and I pulled out my cell phone and began taking pictures of the damage to both vehicles, and subtly, the other driver. In less than 3 or 4 minutes I had sent the pictures to my insurance agent.

You can't do that with film. Period. Digital is here to stay, and it's only going to get better.

I love shooting with film. I will miss it when it's gone.

At present I have legacy film Pentax K and K/A lenses, but also Olympus OM, Contax/Yashica, and Konica AR lenses. It's the Konica lenses I would like to use as much as my legacy Pentax MF lenses with my K-r.

It would also come in handy when Ricoh/Pentax decides to come out with a FF body to compete with the Canon 6D for my camera gear dollars. I do love my film cameras, but it's getting expensive and inconvenient to continue using film. With this adapter my legacy glass can be useful on a daily basis again.

I bought a Pentax body (K-r) because I can use my legacy manual focus K-mount lenses. That was the overriding reason for the purpose; otherwise, I would have gone with a Canon EOS body (because I have film EOS lenses that are compatible with digital EOS bodies). I have twice as many PK/A lenses as EOS lenses, but if I have to go with Canon when the time comes that I can afford a FF, it will most likely be a Canon 6D.

I still use an Argus C3 (they're cheap, I have several) when I decide to shoot film.

Talk about tiny viewfinders! The C3 has two, one for the rangefinder, one to compose the shot. Nearly every shot is a "keeper," because the C3 makes you THINK, before (did I advance the film?), during (aperture, shutter speed, ISO; set the focus with the [recently calibrated] rangefinder's split image, look in the other viewfinder to compose, did you cock the shutter?), and after (wind film immediately after the shot so you don't forget, check the frame counter and is it set right this time?).

I've never missed a shot with a C3 because the batteries were dead.

Timing is crucial, because I won't be able to get off another one for a few seconds (the C3 has a winding knob, not a fast advance lever, and winding is a two-hand operation; the shutter must be cocked manually for each and every shot. Accidental double exposures happen [and sometimes deliberate multiple exposures, so it's all good]).

I have some very sophisticated film SLR cameras, but I usually shoot in manual mode. I do enjoy how a simple manual SLR "student" camera handles, but I seem to have a slightly higher cull rate with the SLRs than I do with the C3; let's just say that I get about the same number of "acceptable" images from a 36 exposure roll in a film SLR that i do with a 24-exposure roll in a C3.

That's all great, I really enjoy film, but for making money I'm going to be using a digital camera of one kind or another. That's just business.

I thought it was understood that a manual dSLR, like a K 1000d, would be a follow-on to a successful, mainstream, all-the-bells-and-whistles, full-featured, full size, Full Frame dSLR. Only after the development costs for the afore-mentioned "flagship" dSLR would there be any sorts of feature-deleted, cheaper follow-on Full Frame models being offered to the unwashed hordes who can't afford a top-of-the-line camera (which cheaper model might carry the Ricoh brand, so as not to offend the more-moneyed?)

Yes, Ricoh is a business; if there is a demand they will try to fill it. If they can do it without major development expense (e.g., deleting features from existing product) there is no reason not to, if the market is there.

The minimalist FF dSLR sort of depends on there being a successful flagship, all-the-bells-and-whistles, you-can't-afford-it FF dSLR first, to recover the investment of going with the FF sensor. After sales of the fancy expensive model peaks, derivative, less-expensive models can be introduced, with the MF minimalist model coming out last; or, next-to-last, as the "retro" styled MF minimalist can follow everything else.

I am currently taking a digital photography course, because I have a couple of digital cameras and I would like to know what all the buttons do. I'm already fairly well versed in film photography, and can often perform my own simple repairs on my film cameras; in fact, I very recently performed "surgery" on an older PK/A tele lens that had a mechanical interference on my newer digital body (after first determining that my "surgery" would not harm its functionality as a film camera lens).

My interest in a "digital film" cartridge is because I have a number of film cameras, and I would like to be able to use them; film has gotten expensive, processing more so, and it wouldn't be that hard technically or that expensive to make such a device: which would simply be a digital camera designed to reside inside a film camera body.

I've recently dissected a dead camera phone to get an idea how small the components are: VERY small, and yet this camera knocks out a decent 1.3mp image from that tiny sensor. Now, there is considerably more volume inside an old 35mm camera for today's electronics, and with my experiences in manufacturing, I am quite confident this is a very do-able project.

The only question remaining is whether there is enough demand for a digital "film" cartridge that would make all those old 35mm film cameras usable again?

I would certainly pay $100- that's about what a dozen rolls of premium film costs. I can't say if I'd be willing to pay $200 or more.

Someone needs to put together a survey of film camera owners who are interested in a "digital cartridge," and see what they would be willing to pay for one.
