Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not concerned with the sound.
I'm an embedded software engineer. Or was, before I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into management. I am accustomed to working with bare boards and embedded OSes. My concern is turning the lens (or the camera) into a brick.

Thanks.
I hung around DPR for a while, mostly for the friendships. I met about a dozen other Pentax shooters in travels, several of whom are now passed. Amazon did to DPReview what they do to everything they touch. It was time to go and that time coincided with life making a 90.
I miss the days with a camera in hand. A phone just doesn't cut it. I'm kinda excited to make a go at it again. ---------- Post added 10-18-2022 at 11:06 PM ----------
Crazy to find a LBC pro on a camera forum. Appreciate the ideas.
We'll see in a few days. I believe the 'stat is properly fitted, but anything is on the table.
Haven't replaced the water pump, so it's probably original. Could be the problem. The car has been in the family since '78, and mine since 2000, so I have a good feel for it's history. I am replacing the original fuel pump with a new SU this go-round.

Hi Mark!
I don't have the overheating sorted yet. She's going to the mechanic tomorrow, as a matter of fact. Consensus on the MGEXP.com forums is an air lock in the coolant, which is disrupting the normal flow. So, I'm going to have the coolant drained and replaced. I ordered a 7 blade fan and a fan shroud from Moss Motors to help with cooling. Also have a 185F thermostat. This hasn't been a problem until recently.
Carbs are tuned to more or less this elevation earlier this year by a pro LBC mechanic. New radiator, cap, and hoses as of 2020. The housing around the thermostat will show 230+ using a laser gauge.
No catalytic converter. That year didn't yet require them. I put straight pipes on her last year.

I was one of the original refugees here from DPReview. It's great to see it's still thriving. Short version: life got complicated, as it does. My wife got sick and I went from wage earner and occasional camera guy to wage earner, housekeeper, and cook. Unfortunately, cancer was stronger the third time, so the last six years have had me finishing the job of raising our kids and getting them to be successful adults.
I'm remarried as of a couple months ago to a lovely lady. She brings a couple of grandkids who know me as 'Pops', so futbol, baseball, and school activities will require me to be the default photographer again. Retirement will come around pretty quick, so I am looking forward to coming back to photography. Apparently, it's either take up photography, woodworking, or model trains . My pandemic project was restoring a classic British roadster, so I now have her to take photos of, as well.
I have a decent selection of glass, some DA*s, a couple pancakes, and a few oddball pieces that are fun (e.g. Zenitar). Looking to get a K70 or K3 mk III and get back into this. I'm always on the lookout for a gently used FA* 70-210.
Cheers
Eric

Excellent. Thanks for the quick response.
I have a K70 in my BH cart, waffling between it and the K3 Mk III. It's been a long while since I was active in photography. I'm sure both are great, I just need to get my sea legs again.
This seems like a safer process than flashing a custom ROM in the camera body. It would appear that I've since reflashed it back to stock firmware v1.31. I'm showing K10D under 'make' in exiftool for my most recent shots, whereas older images say "www.marzecino.com" under make. IIRC, that's where that other ROM came from.

This is a great thread. Appreciate all the detailed technical info. I'm one of the old ones from the early departure from DPReview, but I've been quiet for a decade due to life, death, and stuff.
I have the 1st generation 16-50. The SDM went out within a year. I sent it to Precision and waited and waited. After about 6 months, I got it back with repaired motors. That worked about a year and they went out again. I sent it back and they sent me a refurbished unit. About a year after that, the refurbished lens also went out, so I decided to hell with it. I also sold my 50-135 on these forums about that time because I didn't want to deal with it on a second lens.
I love the images from the lens and it's my daily carry. At the time, I used a custom ROM on my K10D which added a custom menu option to enable/disable screw drive. Truth be told, I often leave the camera in manual focus and shoot like I did with my K1000 so many years ago. That's what I've gone with since. I really haven't had my DSLR out in the last 2 years, but I'm looking to get back into photography now that some of the more pressing life issues have settled themselves.
I'm trying to understand this modding process. If I use this process on my K10D, the lens itself is updated? Reading where @unclevanya is doing this as a service makes me think so. If I do this work, can I buy a K-III or K70 and use the 16-50 with screw drive without messing with the camera body? That would be great. I did the custom ROM trick on the K10D because that camera was about 5 years old at the time, but I don't want to do this on a new body under warranty.
Thanks!

I am glad to see PF still thriving, although it's been a few years since I was active here. Still happy with my K-mounts, even if my most recent camera is a K-10D

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing Item for Sale
Ink Republic CIS for Epson 1400 - MOSTLY FREE (buyer pays shipping) Asking Price
0.00 Shipping Destinations
Worldwide Item Description
Free to good home if you will pay shipping. Otherwise it's going in the trash.
I bought the Ink Republic Continuous Inkflow System several years ago based on personal research and recommendations from DPR users. I've never been able to make it work reliably and I don't like the results with the bulk inks I've used in it. I'm going back to the OEM cartridges and I'll just curse Epson every time it costs me $110 to replace them.
The condition is used in reasonably good condition. It was on my 1400 and I've removed it. Includes the cartridges, chips, tubes, tube guides, and ink bottles.
You will need to adapt it to your own printer using the instructions on IR's web site. There is an extra set of the chips that indicate "full" because something went wrong at some point. You may need to replace these with IR at some point. I've read that they can be cranky.
I reserve the right to choose the recipient among the interested parties, so the first respondent may or may not be the person who receives it.
Good luck. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

I've inspected it and the best I can say is "probably". It looks like there is a base plate that could be unscrewed and you could put a different head on there. But, I can't say for certain because I haven't tried to unscrew it and I'm not going to. I don't want to scratch the paint or run the risk of stripping the screws. It's in pristine shape the way it is and I don't want to change that for whomever buys it.
The 3-way tilt/pan head that is on the tripod has a removable base plate.
Thanks

Hi Marc,
Dang, I wish I had known. You know how I want that FA*--I would've definitely given you a shout. I've already received payment on the DA*. But, if something comes up, I'll let you know.
BTW, I destroyed my tandem yak. Sadly, not on the water...

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing Item for Sale
DA* 50-135/2.8 and other items Asking Price
Multiple (see below) Item Description
I've been away from the photo forums for most of the last year. Work is very busy for me and photography isn't quite the obsession that it once was. I'm cleaning out my closet to make room for my next obsession--kayaking. Some of you may not know me, but I was here when PentaxForums started and I've had several successful buy/sell transactions with other forum regulars.
Most of these items are new or in "like new" condition. I don't baby my equipment, but I don't abuse it either. Expect minor amounts of usage. Photos below. Pentax SMC-P DA* 50-135/2.8 - SOLD
I bought this in June 2008 from B&H. I'm selling it because I just don't use it and it's too expensive to just leave on the shelf. I don't have an actual count, but I'd say less than 300 total photos taken with the lens. Box is intact, with purchase receipt. The black, padded canvas sleeve shows signs of normal wear--a few scuffs but no rips or tears. Comes with a 67mm HOYA HMC Super UV0 filter. SLIK PRO 340DX Travel Tripod - $70
I bought this in April at Keeble & Shuchat in Palo Alto, CA. My Manfrotto died on me while I was on a work trip and I wanted a new tripod. Paid $120--going for $90 on B&H. I like the heft of this tripod--it's a keeper, but it's just a bit too long for my backpack. After my trip, I bought a replacement Manfrotto. Pacsafe 85 Backpack protector - $55
I bought this for our trip to Europe this summer after reading several guidebooks talking about theft. I was a bit too paranoid, but I was carrying several thousand dollar in photo/computer gear around in our rental car. I suppose it's a cheap insurance policy. It was fine for what it is and I definitely see where it could come in handy in a lot of situations. I just don't think I will need it again in the foreseeable future. Apple iPod Touch 8GB - $175
Bought from the Apple store on the Apple campus in Cupertino, CA. Receipt shows purchase date of 28 May 2009, so the warranty period is still valid. I bought this as a gift and it turns out the recipient already had one, so I bought her a kayak instead. I took the Touch with me to France and it was nice on the plane. But, I already have an iPod Classic that I prefer (and I don't need "An App for That"). The iPod has been inside a case (included) since Day 1 and when I carried it in my backpack, it was inside a velvet pouch. Only minor evidence that it's not brand new. The Apple earbuds were not used. The data cable was used by me, but it's in great shape also. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

Wow, what an amazing and insightful post. Thanks for keeping the OT so focused. :hmm:
To be honest, if Walmart decides to come to Oz, there is little you will be able to do about it. Just lay back and try not to think about.

Wow, another southern, anti-shrub, fervent gun owner who shoots k-mount. I'm guessing we've just about exhausted that particular sub-genre.
Besides the DA*'s, I also like my Stoeger over/under 12 gauge.

If you can get the F50/1.7 for under $100US, then my advice is to run, don't walk, to the store to get it. I paid $125+ for my two most recent F50/1.7's and that was before the K10D phenomenon pushed the prices of K-mounts up. I currently own 3 copies of this lens and 5 have passed thru my muddy paws in the last 10 years. None of them were bad.

Wish I could be there--we lived in Cedar Park for 5 years. Loved it, but I can't believe how the place is growing...
There is a Central Texas Pentaxians group on this site and Matthew Roberts is the caretaker. Also, get Jim (aka Rupert60) over on DPR. Last time I was down, he and I met up at Coopers BBQ in Llano and drove the Willow City loop.
For better or worse, I'll be traveling the various continents from now until the Sooners whip the Shorthorns again this fall.

I went to Colonial Photo in July 2006, but they didn't have Pentax represented very well. I asked one of the counter guys where the Pentax digital stuff was. He pulled out a dusty 67 from behind the counter with a smirk. I paid the $12 for my one item and left.

I took out the metal hood and screwed a 49 to 52mm step up ring into it. Then, I was able to use all the lens caps and filters from my kit lenses with it.

Well, if it's not permanent, there's time to win her heart. Then again, you may be in the precarious position of "friend". Quote: Sarah's a nice girl, a Daught of the Northern Coast, as Australian Crawl once sung, beautiful country. A spark of anarchy in the, like opal in potch; I made the mistake of turning up with a copy of the Sunday Mail, she reads The Australian. The Mail's got better crosswords, ... Now, that's poetry.
