What is the actual benefit of mirrorless?

I use both Olympus M43 and Pentax APSC but for different purposes. My Pentax bodies are weather sealed so they get more use when I know it will be dusty or wet. I also have some old lenses that I use on them when I’m nostalgic and I also have more macro lenses and accessories for Pentax.

I use the Olympus (E-M10 II) as my main camera for the lighter weight, smaller size, and I have found I see better with the EVF. I have an E-PL8 that I use instead of a compact with either the EZ compact zoom or one of the pancake lenses. I think the IBIS is slightly better on the Olys for me but the weight and lens size may be part of the difference. My Oly bodies both have tilt screens so I can shoot like I have a waist-level finder without having to get down on my bad knees and get up with my bad back.

If I do my part both give my results that look good on a screen and prints up to 13x19” and I don’t print ant larger. I still prefer my M645 or RB67 to either brand but I think I’m past lugging them around and I gave up my darkroom.

A M4/3 quandry

The E-PL1 is way behind any of the Pens or OM-Ds from the last few years.

One of the nice things about M4/3 is you can adapt almost any lens to fit. I had some old Kodak Retina Reflex (DKL mount) lenses I used because they were smaller lenses. Since my eyesight isn't what it was I'm mostly autofocus these days.

I actually started my switch to M4/3 when I bought a used 4/3 E-620 and replaced my K20D. Then an E-PL2, E-PM2 (too small), E-PL5, and now the E-M10. I love the EVF and the image quality is good enough for my purposes and prints well up to at least 13 x 17.

I did recently pick up a K-50 on sale to use with m K-mount macro lenses and the WR kit zooms. I have slowly been selling off or donating most of my Pentax gear.

Which body are you using?

If you like longer lenses the 40*150 kit lens is surprisingly good. I also like the Sigma DN lenses.

Kind of an old thread but I made the switch to Olympus as my main system a couple of years ago. I did just pick up a K-50 to use with a couple WR lenses I had around. Since it has started raining in Texas again I may actually need a camera that can stand the rain.

I find the screen on the Lumix G2 to be a little under- rather than over-responsive. Personally, I prefer buttons and dials, but the TC would to have fit the LCD only theme. It is much more useable when the camera is not at your eye.

I cannot imagine Jonathan Ive letting this out the door based on appearance. If anything, the chimney AND dial would have been gone and replaced by touch screen controls. I think that is one of the other things that bugs me about the camera. If they wanted to minimize external controls, why not drop the chimney/dial and use a touch screen interface?

I was thinking it might either be an odd folding flash or the hump might have the same accessory port (most of the PENs) + some other port. Size wise, it would appear to be about the size of the E-P3 (L X W) and a bit taller but not as tall as the E-P3 + VF2. Adding both of the extra grips shown would really bump up the size.

Pentax K-01 - a stepping stone?

You can use the DA lenses on a FF body and I looked at several of them on my film bodies. The problem is they vignette, to varying degrees, and most are NOT likely to appeal to someone upgrading to a FF to maximize quality. I personally think the likelihood of Pentax making a FF body decreases every day as smaller sensors increase in performance but I've held on to a few of my FA and Sigma lenses, just in case.

I will have to admit I was hoping Pentax would make a mirrorless body with a new mount, and native adapter to use K-mount lenses, that was more like the rumored Olympus OM-D. I've now started planning what to sell to finance the purchase of said OM-D (assuming it is close to the rumored specs).

While the K-01 has zero appeal for me, most of your points are at least reasonable arguments. I disagree with some of them, but you may very well turn out to be right. The only real point I think is NOT going to be a factor is #5. I think most of the people who are new to Pentax that buy the camera are going to buy DA lenses so upgrading to a FF body WITH THE SAME LENSES would not be an option. At the same time, I think most of the new buyers that are attracted are not going to care or notice if a FF Pentax comes out. I think they will be far more likely to switch to a smaller bodied APS-C as the prices come down OR a M4/3 (or similar) as capabilities go up.

I still think the biggest omission was not going the Olympus/Panasonic route and adding a port to allow for an optional EVF. I have an E-PL2 for when I go really light and I bought the VF-2. I only use it about 20~25% of the time, but those times I really need it and NOT having it would have made me purchase a different camera.

Great redo. Keep the flash hump and add a port for an optional EVF like Olympus and Panasonic.

-How would you rate the look overall? I originally rated it a three, but the longer I look at it, the less I like it.

-Does the 40mm fit the camera well? Coupled with the design, it screams "Toy Camera."

-Are you planning on buying one based on what you've read about it in the official announcement? No.

-In buying a camera, how important is the look compared to the features? Very important, somewhat important, or unimportant? Given a choice between two cameras of equal specs, I'd take the one that was better looking. That said, I would find the safety yellow so annoying to look at I would never carry it.

-How do you think people who've never heard of Pentax would react to this camera? Either fall in love or ROFL, depending on their tastes.

The K-01 is too big to be a small camera, not big enough(for me) to use with older large/heavy lenses, and I want either a built-in OVF or EVF OR an optional one (Oly VF-2).

I thought everything looked like leftover props from '60's B SciFi movies and TV shows. Well I guess some could be from the early 70's............

The car design looks like a Yugo, the chairs look like torture devices, and the timepieces all emphasis form over function.

This doesn't bode well for folks expecting retro or usability.

Why chose the E-PL3 as the comparison camera?

The E-P3 has a built-in flash, grip (replaceable with options) for better hold, and a much better control layout.

The E-PM1 would have been the closest in size to the Q.

Personally, I'm not buying either one as I already have an E-PL2 (closer to the P3 than the PL3) and a few lenses as my everyday carry.

Why I might want the Pentax Q

Exactly why I bought an Oly E-PL2. With the 17mm (35mm equiv.) mounted it will fit in a pocket, although I tend to carry my full kit in a Lowepro S&F Utility bag tucked in my messenger bag. I also picked up a Lowepro ILC 50 that holds the 17mm in the bottom and the camera with 14-42mm mounted and is light enough I forget it's there.

Personally, the Oly is as small a camera I would want to go with just because of the size of the cameras and controls. The Q could have better image quality than the K-5 and I wouldn't buy it just be cause of the size. For those with smaller hands and less stiffness, this would make a great choice for a really compact, always there system.

I've used this brand for about 12 years. I have a Sherlock and Sherlock Travel and don't use them much for hiking these days (knee surgery again) but still I find them handy for a walk in the woods. I actually use the Sherlock as a cane when completely collapsed and a small ball head attached. The Travel stays in my car.

Unless otherwise noted, all lenses are working with no fungus, haze, or large particles inside and include caps. These are older lenses so some dust is to be expected. I do try and be conservative in rating the lenses. If you think I'm too high, I would be open to offers and discounts for multiple items.

1.(PENDING) Sunpak BZ 2600 flash and sync cord: $10
There are are some scratches on the body and marks on the front panel.

2.(PENDING) Vivitar 5200 Flash and PM module: $10

3. (PENDING) Vivitar 5250 Flash and Pentax PM module: $10

4.(PENDING) Vivitar R-TTL (Ricoh) module & extra batter holder: $10
This worked with the 5XXX flashes and XR-P and later bodies (IIRC).

5.(PENDING) M-Rock Arches sling bag: $40
This is the previous version and was only lightly used. No noticeable marks, snags, discoloration , or other problems with the bag. The dividers, rain cover, and original lens cloth are included.

6. Prinz Auto M42 Extension tubes: $10
Made in Japan and apparently never used.

7. Vivitar TX 135/2.8: $20
Good condition with M42 mount. Missing the lock for the TX mount, but I used it regularly this way

8. SOLD Vivitar M42 28/2.5: $40 SOLD

10. Vivitar TX 90-230/4.5 Zoom: $50
Very good condition with Mamiya SX (M42 variant) mount. Some marks on the cap.

11. Vivitar T4 200/3.5: $20
Slight internal haze, and aperture is slow. Blades are clean but it feels like the pin may be hanging slightly. M42 mount.

Pictures of the items are all at:
MobileMe Gallery

Prices listed do not include S&I and shipping will be at actual cost. At this point I would prefer to limit this to shipping in USA and Canada.

Cmd-R is the forced refresh. I've also reset the history and emptied the cache (liked a forced refresh for all pages) and still no menus. The link just gives a screen of:

if(!window.console||!console.firebug){window.console={};var names=["log","debug","info","warn","error","assert","dir","dirxml","group","groupEnd","time","timeEnd","count","trace","profile","profileEnd"];for(var i=0;i
etc, etc, etc

Tried it several time, emptied the browsing history, cleared all the caches and every other thing I can think of. Still no drop down menus and the sections still pop to a new page.

I'm using a Mac and tried Cmd-R and Cmd F5 (Safari) and still no joy. No drop down menus and when I double click a camera icon to mark all threads as read I go to a new page with just those sub-forums on it. Very irritating.
