Help with cleaning/disassembly of SMC A 100mm f2.8 lens

So, after all, removing the rubber on the focus ring was not useless. Turning it inwards all the way AND pushing the built-in hood out, does revel 3 screws. Once removed, this frees the front tube, giving access the the front lenses block.
Now I'm stuck again. It's a thick metal block (see photos) with the second lens embedded at the bottom and the top lens on top. It looks like a darker metal ring is holding it in place, with now apparent spanner grove, screw or screw thread holding it in.
I've try unscrewing it, it's difficult there it nothing to grab onto, no success.
Is it glued in?? the back of the front plate is what I'm trying to access to clean.

The aperture click ball bearing is not the nobbin I was talking about, it's the one on the mount plate. There is zero of these on K and M mount lens and cameras, one on A lenses and 6 on A and FA cameras, 7 on digital, from what I can see. Probably for lens-camera communication. These are very hard to set back in if they pop out, makes me dread opening the back of a FA lens.

Thank you all for your replies.
An update, and a request for more advice

1- I removed the rubber grip form the focus barrel, it wasn't hiding any screw. I wish I didn't, It's probably stretched now and won't fit well when I put it back on...

2- I opened the back of the lens but once the metal plate and aperture rigs are removed, it looks pretty complicated and I'm not sure I can get to the front this way. Re-setting the aperture ring, with the nobbin on a tiny spring (what is this for anyways?) was difficult.

3- in this video, there's a disassembly of a M135/3.5 with a similar looking front element. The guy used spanners, but there is no spanner groves here so I just used plyers and hoped for the best, it unscrewed (CCW)

4- but that's not the end of it, it seems the front element (and likely the second based on the schematics, see M100/2.8 on this site, same optical design) is part of a contraption with a base ring too wide to come out of the lens barrel. This whole block is dangling inside the tube now and can't come out. When I gripped the housing of the front element, it's that ring that got unscrewed. Maybe it's all one piece, maybe not I can't tell. You can tell from the first 2 photos in the original post above and I've attached a diagram I just drew from what I can guess the geometry is in there. A is some sort of a ring at the front of the tube that prevents the whole lens block form coming out, B is the threading where the "base ring" of the "lens block" was screwed on.
Is it possible that when I turned CCW (as in the video) that ring got unscrewed, but if I could screw it back in and turn CW something more favorable would happen??

5- is there any chance the whole tube unscrews into 2 halves, like on a 300mm/4 or a 200/25?? but with the freaking built in hood I can't get a grip on the tube...

Can't really remove the rubber without cutting it, but maybe the front edge of the metal tube of the focusing right (onto which the rubber is fixed) is actually its own piece and can be unscrewed... there seems to be a small gap

Hello All,

I'm trying to cleaning the front element(s) of this lens, the back of the front element in particular, so I need to take it apart. I've taken apart a few lenses before but I'm stuck on this one.
After removing the first plastic ring, I see the first lens is held by a smooth black ring (photo 1). It doesn't have any gap for a spanner and I tried spinning it (both ways) with a rubber cone but it didn't move. I really think this is what I'm supposed to do (that's what I did for a M120mm f2.8 a long time ago, not that they are the same design), but it's not working.

There is no other slot for a spanner that's accessible in the front, only much deeper where spanners can't reach (photo 2).
There are screws on the "tube" but they are behind the focusing ring (photo 3) and I can't access them without removing the ring, but there are zero screws on the outer part of the lens (focus ring, aperture ring...) that would let me release anything. The only screws I can see or on the mounting plate, and I'd really rather not start that way to just extract the front element.
In some (older?) lens, the body of the lens can be separated in 2 by unscrewing the "inner tube" in the front from "outer tube" in the back that has the focus ring. I don't know if that could be the case here, but because of the built-in hood I can get a good grip on the tube to try that.

Any idea?

Thank you

Advise for a cheap eclipse setup, with what I have or not much more

Thanks for your replies.

I know what a 95% eclipse is and I know it's not totality, and I can't travel that day. Still it's not everyday you see a 95% eclipse and if it was totality where I am, I would get better equipment.
By cardboard sun filter I mean a proper ISO:12312-2 filter in a cardboard folding hood, not a hard screw-on filter.

Bob, your illustration is very useful, at 600mm it's not that bad. Plus I'd like to watch it and not have to track the sun constantly, so it's not bad if it doesn't take the full frame.
Photoptimist, stacking converters! if I use all I have I think I get get to 3600mm, wow! but then I expect mush, I'll try with 2x2x300...

Hello All,

I live in a 95% eclipse area. I will try to take a decent photo, but because the chances that the sun will not be covered by clouds are around 40% and I don't really use long focal lengths, I don't want to buy a lens just for this (or very cheap).
I have the equipment below, acquired by choice or just as part of lots. I will try to test it and make my own opinion, but I would appreciate the forum's inputs.

* camera: I have a K5 and a K01, I'm thinking the mirrorless is more convenient for this?
* tripod: I have a decent one
* sun filter: have one, cardboard type
* lenses:
- Takumar 300/4 (a bit dustier than the other lenses)
- Takumar 200/3.5
- K 200/4
- FA 70-200 zoom
* old 2x converters for K mount and M42 (3rd party like soligor, tokina...)

Is it worth using a vintage x2 teleconverter, or will it degrade IQ and it's better to crop ?
The obvious choice would be 600mm with the Tak300 x2...
but the optics of the Tak200/3.5 and K200/4 are probably better, so 400mm with these and a x2 converter may be better even with some cropping? ...
but using K mount is easier than adapting M42 so just the K200/4 x2? (this is what I would chose if I had to decide now before testing)...
The FA70-200 is maybe not great but it's still more modern so maybe it's better? ...
but if that's the case, maybe I can try to push it to 300 and get a "modern" FA100-300 (especially the f4.7) or something similar on ebay for $30? ...
but I hear good things about the "newer" DA 55-300, probably the best modern optics of the list, so I could try getting the cheaper models SMC DA or SMC DA-L (HD out of my price range I think)?

Please share your thoughts

*Ah, I forgot I also have a cast iron barrel 500mm mirror that I got for $5 because there was a spider inside  (I cleaned it) but it takes worse pictures of the moon than the my other options, so no

You and I spend the same for our most expensive lenses, makes you wonder what collection of gear these people have, who spent $4000 on such a specialty lens. I guess someone is buying a M42 to Leica adapter today!

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I think, I hope, on the long term I will get both.
I've stopped film in the early 2000s and I'm so used to APSC cropping that I don't even know what I'm missing on the wide side. 50mm still feels like "normal", it's cropped but the angle/distortion is still 50mm, and when I use a 28mm x1.5, il feels wide ;-)

Some people have commented on the viewfinder being better on the K1, can anyone tell me how the K5 viewfinder compares to the KP and K1 for manual focusing?
Also, not a primary use case, but how are the live view focusing assists/focus peaking on the KP and K1?

KP or K-1?

Hello,
I'd like to hear some opinions about buying a KP or a K-1 (i or ii) right now, and I'll add some background about my photo setup.

- My "current" camera is a K-5 and I also own a K-01 that I don't use much.
- I only use Pentax lenses, almost only manual focus primes. I like the limitations and the pace of manual focusing with primes and also they are cheap compared to new glass and beautiful objects to own. I have a few cheap F/FA primes and DA kit zooms for when I want autofocus. I'm attached to Pentax for personal reasons and because of the lens collection I've built, I'm happy with them and I'm not looking to leave Pentax. I suppose that eventually used digital lenses will start being cheaper, and I may be tempted by DAs at that point
- I don't do much action photo, and with the lenses I have, autofocus performance is not a factor
- to me the specific benefit of the KP is the size. I feel, but I could be wrong, that the IQ from a KP would not be much lower than that of a K-3, and I know I would enjoy the smaller size. The KP is probably the best "small" K-mount DSLR that will ever exist...
- the main benefit of the K-1 to me is not exactly the IQ, but using all my old glass the way it was supposed to, without cropping (although maybe loosing some IQ on the edges?). Wide angle is an issue with APSC and old glass, anything below 28mm is more rare and expensive.

So, do I get a more modern, smaller APSC to continue shooting the way I've been with my K-5 just a bit better and easier, or do I go all the way to full frame to use my lenses the way they are supposed to be used?

Any opinion appreciated

Konishiroku Hexanon 52mm f1.4

Hello,
I got this lens recently, because it feels heavy and nice, f1.4 is always interesting and 52mm is different. It's dirty but salvageable and I don't know much about it.
It seems it's a Konica mount, it seems there is a rare version of this lens, and it seems it's not easy to adapt to PK (KONISHIROKU HEXANON 52mm 1.4 - LIBRARY OF LENSES)...
Does anyone here know more about it?
Thanks

Pentax lenses: how many were made?

Hello,
Is there a ressource online that lists, or estimates, how many of each Pentax lens were produced/sold? Especially interested in film-era lenses.
I remember there was a site a long ago that said whether a particular lens could be found for sale "once a week" or "once every few years" (on ebay I assume), but I can't remember what site that once and I'd like more info than that anyways.

Thanks

Hello friends, I found a Schneider-Kreuznach 135mm f4 Retina-Tele-Xenar and I have no experience with that system. Can it be adapted to K mount (I have a K5 and K01) and does it work well? I'm curious about aperture control since it seems there is none on the lens itself.
Thanks

Using a K7 without the back wheel

Hello, the back dial became un-responsive, I took it out, it's broken. The stem connecting the wheel to the potentiometer broke (it's just a plastic part). I used epoxy to glue it back ;) and it worked for a few turns before breaking again.

Option 1 is finding a replacement wheel, what's the cheapest DSLR with similar wheel that I can buy? but then it's just a K7, not worth that much.. Option 2 is trying to use a metal piece (cut a 1/16in L-shape hex key...)
Option 3 is trying to figure out how much I can use it without the back dial. All the rest works so I can take photos, but I wish there was a way to disable all back dial functions. Depending on the mode, I have to go into settings to change what the front wheel does, which is doable (especially with a lens that has a aperture ring) but cumbersome. ISO range and EV seems to be the most problematic.

Any advice?

Thank you all for your comment. No one said: you have enough, don't buy anymore!

I've updated the table to show up and down votes in the comments for each lens. The lenses are reviewed on this site and not always in the same way as the small sample in this thread, with old second-hand lenses there's always a chance of unit-to-unit variation anyways, but this table helps me make more sense of the ecosystem as a whole.

I'll keep my eyes open for a K105 (though it has middling reviews and I think it's rare), maybe a M120 for travel and I'm curious about the 150s now...

I meant so many from the point of view of the pentax user in 2023. The differences between the K/M/A series are not much compared to the more recent generations of lenses
