I already have a monochrome “FF” camera - I consistently load my film camera with B&W film.

I am more than satisfied with the K1 but there is always room for improvements (more the 170000 pictures done with my K1-I) - There is no need for a higher resolution, but I wouldn't mind - doubling the resolution of the K3 is the upper limit
- An improvement in the high ISO would be fine for concert photography
- High speed frame rate as least as the K3 would be fine
- Bigger Buffers for longer high speed sessions is a must, I would prefer unlimited pictures in raw mode (12 per second), the pauses at the K1 are more than boring
- A real fast transfers peed to the cards is a must
- A BSI sensor as in the K3-III would be fine
- Adapting all improvements of the K3 III is mandatory
- GPS must be kept, I'm doing town and landscape photography and I didn't like the GPS external adaption - K3 way - it's to bulky and no external trigger or flash is possible. maybe it can be moved to the battery grip
- A noiseless real electronic shutter with mirror up is a need

I'm so happy to finally have a great wide angle lens for my K-1 II. All of these are taken within the City of Phoenix, Arizona - one of the largest cities in the US. |

one point: I think you'll find that by carefully maintaining the horizon line as absolutely parallel as possible to the frame you will find less distortion.

The three most common filters used with B&W are yellow, orange & red (at least for scenic photography).
Yellow is the most subtle of the three filters, and back in the B&W film days, yellow was the filter you used most often. A yellow filter is often claimed to make things in B&W look 'more natural', as sometimes colored objects appear lighter or darker than we think they 'should' when their colors are translated into B&W gray tones. A lot of people used to shoot B&W with a yellow filter on their lens almost all the time.
Red has a pretty dramatic effect - it darkens greens and blues. Foliage gets really dark, as do (low humidity) blue skies. And shadows get dark. Sometimes maybe too dark. Back in the film days, I suspect that I over-used my red filter, so I'm trying to not automatically reach for it like I used to...
Orange sits in between yellow and red in it's effects - orange adds more contrast outdoors than the yellow filter, less than the red. Orange darkens blue a lot - and shadows have a lot of blue light...
For the indoor shot - the day was overcast - I was trying the orange filter to assess the impact on how the color of the pews was rendered in B&W. The pews were were finished with very worn varnish. With white walls, light brown-ish painted trim, gray floor, and the worn varnish of the wood pews, I needed to make sure the tones of the pews was clearly separated from the painted trim. It seemed that the orange filter made the wear in varnish somewhat more visible, which aided in visually separating the pews from the trim.
For the outdoor flower shot, I was looking to help separate the flower from the background, and so went with orange (darker shadows, darker foliage). Red might have also have been a good choice, but I didn't try it - I was shooting handheld, and the orange filter was slow enough already.
I almost always have a colored contrast filter on my lens when shooting B&W - either yellow, orange or red. I have green filters, but since I mostly shoot scenics, I haven't used my green filters much.

I'm about to start my 3d week as Artist-in-Residence at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. I've been shooting most of my work with the K-3 III Monochrome, using vintage Pentax K-mount lenses (and an old Tamron Adaptall-2 90mm 52B). I've been learning a lot in this effort, but I'm having a great time.
The National Park Service has Artists-in-Residence at many places across the US. It's a volunteer position that you need to apply for, but if you're so inclined, it's a great opportunity! NPS Artist-in-Residence info.
The first image was shot with an A 24/2.8 (supposedly the same optical formula as the K 24/2.8) @ f/11, ISO 200, 1/20 sec. Orange filter
The second image was shot with a K 35/3.5 @ f/5.6, ISO 200, 1/60 sec. Orange filter

Hi, I'm new to Pentax Forum. Received my Monochrome on June 3. Since then have been snapping around with it wherever I go. It seems I just
want to shoot everyting in front of me in black and white. :) (Can only share 5 this post....) ---------- Post added 07-21-23 at 09:52 PM ----------
Correction: Received my Monochrome on June 30, not June 3.

I think we all saw this coming.. Pentax KiMONO SMCP-K 50mm f/1.2 @ f/2 ISO 200 1/1250th Leica M10 Monocrom Leica Summilux-M 75mm f/1.4 @ f/2 ISO 160 1/1000th
This is a handheld comparison, so not as rigorous as what I would usually post however it does demonstrate at least to me the highlight retention of the KiMONO Vs the Monochrom - I really tried to get the blooms on the almond trees to stay within the range of the midtone. Even with some slight underexposure on the M10 still blew out, which is indicative of the differences in the sensors and the image processing pipelines used between the two cameras.Though having said that, at ISO 400 the M10 breaks even in terms of dynamic range Vs the Pentax Kimono. It has been mentioned before that the true ISO of the M10 Monochrome is closer to 400~500 range and that settings lower than this have been pulled with a cost to overall dynamic range. Interestingly, the Leica Summilux-M 75mm f/1.4 has a lot in common with our own FA77 - neither lens is exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer in the corners at their widest aperture, and the physical size of both lenses is remarkably quite close.

6/16, I finally received my K-3 III Monochrome.
The Taiwanese distributor included some additional gifts, providing me with a Pentax K-3 III pentaprism and a New Era hat featuring the AOCO logo.
These past few days, I have taken a few photos with it,
and it is quite different from the other camera models I currently use, such as the K-1, 645Z, and K5.
I will need some time to familiarize myself with its unique features and functions.

Went to a show of historical military vehicles and snapped a couple of pictures. The vehicles were parked indoors, so I relied on the K-3 III Monochrome's high ISO capabilities.

Hi, I am a Pentax user in Taiwan. English is not my native language,
so please bear with me if my sentence structure is not very fluent.
The characteristic you mentioned, " dull." or a less pronounced contrast in terms of light performance,
is something I can relate to. I have also ordered a Pentax K-3 III monochrome edition,
but I have yet to receive it as it is still in transit.
I believe there could be a few reasons for this:
We are not yet accustomed to the pure black and white sensor,
which results in "monochrome images based on brightness performance.
" It's likely that both Pentax engineers and users are still exploring and adjusting to this new technology.
However, I believe it will improve over time. Prior to this, high-priced black and white cameras from Leica were the only options available, and they were not widely used, so similar issues were not commonly observed.
Over the past decade, we have become accustomed to black and white photos derived from color images.
In this process, we could enhance specific colors by switching color channels. For example,
Pentax's BW mode can simulate the effects of color filters by switching between seven color channels.
I believe this rendering process has shaped our perception of "black and white photos." In a pure black and white camera,
this functionality returns to the physical properties of filters. Without using filters,
the result may be the "original texture" that we observe.
Moreover, different manufacturers' BW modes exhibit significant variations in "contrast" characteristics.
For instance, (based on my experience with my wife's XT-3, )
Fujifilm's ACROS mode demonstrates a pronounced development trend at both the pure black and pure white ends.
This creates a distinct contrast performance in ACROS photos, which can be further fine-tuned through custom settings.
Pentax's customizable options also appear to have similar capabilities.
However, due to the limited number of K-3 III monochrome users currently,
the availability of user feedback is still scarce.
Nevertheless, I believe the JPEG output capability of the camera should also deliver a distinct contrast performance.
