So if you guys had the choice of new 55-300 (@5.6) or an older 300@f4 that would be possibly* better in lower light and questionably sharper, I'm assuming most would go 55-300 for sports and small amounts of wildlife shooting? Remembering that I don't expect to be capturing fast paced crazy action shots in dim lighting.

I meant to include purpose, sorry about that. I intend to use it for tense sporting moments (relatively still subjects that I have time to focus for). Also for some wildlife. However, I'm concerned about quality of light for some events so was figuring I want to stay down around f4 if possible. I have used my manual 135/2.8 effectively but it just doesn't have the reach I need for sports such as football (either version haha)

And thank you so much to all of the suggestions, and especially to those who uploaded pictures to accompany the post, very helpful and much appreciated.

Being on a very tight budget, I am looking at old manual 300mm / f4.5 or faster lenses that are as sharp as possible. What would be my best bet in this situation? I have experience with old fast 50s but none with 300mm and there is no where near me to try anything. Thanks for any and all input. I am not a professional and don't expect miracles but would like something (if possible) to be optically equivalent, or better, than my 18-135wr.

Just picked up an 18-135 WR to replace my 18-55 and 50-200. Wow, what a difference in look, feel, and sound. Very worth while upgrade that didn't break the bank. Wish I would have gone that route sooner. Attached is a pic of my dog again, this time inside (iso 1250) with the new lens. I got into the settings and did a little tweaking after the reset, and overall I am happy with the results.

Yeah, it's sad too. I am typically the "techy" guy in the family whether it's helping choose electronics, setting up, troubleshooting, or repairing. And I fail to essentially do a reset...the first thing you should always do with any piece of electronic equipment haha. O well. If nothing else I learned a little from all of the posts, so I appreciate that a lot.

Here are two pictures I took today with my 50/1.8 after resetting the camera completely. So I am thinking something got goofed up somewhere along the line because these are acceptable (for me at least).

ISO 100, 1/100, F8
Spot Focus & Metering
2nd picture is Live View

You guys rock. I'm finally going to be able to get out and test some suggestions today.

First things will be a camera reset, lens clean, then some test shots in both viewfinder and live view. I will post some results. Thanks again.

Yeah I would like to have WR (big reason I liked the k50 to start with). I'll look into those two.

Thanks a lot everyone. I will look into the focus chart (did not know about this). And I really never use live view, so I'll check that out too.

I assumed the noise was just the lenses, so that's good to know. I was considering dumping my two zooms for an 18-135 or something similar. I'll take any suggestions (under $600 would be nice).

Hey guys,

So I'm a bit down in the dumps here, looking for a bit of advice. I feel that no matter what I do, many of my pictures lack the sharpness they should have and shooting just hasn't been fun.

I would blame myself, however, I have not had this issue using my brother in laws Canon SL1, among other cameras... Am off which seem quicker and quieter compared to my k50. And images look great whether it's in auto, aperture priority, or full manual.

It almost feels like I bought a dud, does this actually happen?

I currently have the k50 with 18-50 kit lens, Pentax 55-200 DA, Pentax 50/1.8, and a manual 50/1.4.
With all the lenses, AF is super loud, slow, and twitchy. Pictures often look soft or noisy in all different shooting modes. This has me looking at buying either a different lens or another body, k3 maybe. It doesn't seem others are having this issue and it makes me feel like a crap photographer anytime I shoot. I love photography and all that goes with it, I am certain a level of it can be blamed on me, but using other cameras and getting better results is a bit frustrating.

I appreciate constructive criticism or suggestions and welcome any questions. O, and I typically shoot raw but have gone full auto jpeg, manual with jpeg, and scenes with jpeg trying to nail down this issue.

can I just convert to .tiff files since they do open and seem to retain info, or am I just better off shooting in jpeg format?

I purchased and downloaded Aftershot Pro as suggested but it does not seem to play well with .dng files...

Any suggestions?

Per someone's suggestion here I purchased and downloaded Aftershot Pro...and I cannot open any files...

Upon further research I understand this is an issue with .dng and Aftershot. Does anyone have a work around for this, having just purchased it, I would like to use it without degrading my raw file in the process just to import it.

I have read a lot of opinions but no real answers for this.

Thanks,

Tyler

Thanks to both of you. I will check out your review, and the camera has not been in auto mode since coming out of the box haha. But I was referring more to the other menu settings, not so much Aperture, Shutter, etc.

I searched some past threads but have not found anything that is exactly what I am looking for.

Let's say your k-30/k-50 got set back to default, what would you change in your menu settings? I realize this is somewhat personal, but if I had some direction on what many of you change, it would give me a starting point.

Thanks!

My K-50 came in today, already updated firmware and took a few test shots of the pup. I am excited to get it out in the snow tomorrow and start playing around. I would assume I will need to mess with lowering the exposure and adjusting white balance with the snow tomorrow?

I was definitely an "equipment ho" over on the golf forum golfwrx.com so I am sure it is bound to happen here as well...I just don't know any better yet haha. However, my wife says I was more of an "equipment pimp"...I guess because of how quickly I was selling whatever I bought.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Hi everyone my name is Tyler and I am brand new to the Pentax world and relatively new to DSLR photography. About 5 mins ago I bought a K-50 and some small accessories. I'm very excited to get the camera in my hands and start learning. I've found a local camera shop to order prints through, the guy there seems pretty awesome, so I am excited to take some classes there and use them for the million questions I will have along the way.

I am always into forum boards to help answer questions with my hobbies as well. I use to be active on several car forums, am still active on a golf forum, and would occasionally be on some gun forums as well...but anyway, if anyone has suggestions on forum links, websites, books, and/or videos for me to check out as a beginner it would be much appreciated.

I'll be sticking with the 18-55 kit lens for now and using GIMP for all of my post processing. If anyone has any suggestions for other free or cheap software that will work in place of or along side GIMP, please let me know.

Sorry for the longwinded intro:confused:

Thanks!
Tyler
