Petersen automobile museum.
1966 Nissan Silvia CSP 311. They were hand-built on a Fairlady chassis.
1962 Hino Renault PA62. After WWII, Japan did not have resources to meet demand and therefore partnered with established companies.
1937 Datsun Model 16 Coupe. During the 30s, Japan passed legislation encouraging domestic auto production, and the DAT Corporation was the first in Japan to use mass-production techniques.
1954 Suminoe Flying Feather. After WWII, lack of fuel and raw resources led to small, lightweight cars. This one used a lot of motorcycle parts, and lack of demand resulted in less than 200 being built.
1954 Fuji Cabin 5A. From one of the designers of the Flying Feather, the crappy fiberglass shell on an otherwise decent chassis limited the production to 85 units.
1955 Suzuki Suzulight SF. Built by motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki, it was the first small Japanese car built under the industry-changing "360cc" legislation of 1955.
1960 Mitsubishi 500 A10. Keeping it simple, this was the first Japanese car tested in a wind-tunnel.
1969 Mazda Cosmo Sport 1105. Mazda bought the rotary engine technology from what is now Audi. The hand-built Cosmo premiered at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show and started production in 1967 as the first two-rotor vehicle.
1936 Toyoda (that's how they spelled it then) AA Replica. Textile loom manufacturer Kiichiro Toyoda applied his manufacturing concepts, which became the "Toyota Production System", to the auto industry.
1967 Toyota 2000 GT MF10. Yamaha did the engineering, which was declined by Nissan and embraced by Toyota. Hand-built with a rosewood dash and signal-seeking radio. |

Mecum auctions are known for their general focus on American muscle, but this year's affair in Houston included some very nice exotics, some of which I photographed and post below.

Yesterday, I attended a Mecum auction in Houston. As is usually the case with Mecum, consignments comprised scads of Corvettes and '60s muscle cars. However, there was a smattering of other stuff, including the MGTD, MGTF, Austin Healy 3000, Jag MK 2 Sedan and Jag XK150 pictured below.
Photography was not my main focus (ho, ho, ho . . . .) this trip, so my picture taking was slap dash. Consequently, the pics are technically pretty mediocre. Still, they may be of interest to some.

You can't visit a Mecum auction without encountering dozens upon dozens of muscle cars. Here are some shots I grabbed at this year's Mecum in Houston.
Although I never owned one, my favorite muscle car of the '60s and early '70s was the 65 GTO - not because it was the fastest or the most capable, but because I love the clean, spare lines that disappeared in '66 as GM's midsize models became bigger and more bulbous. The first two shots here are of a convertible and a hardtop.
The third photo below is of a "super stock" Dodge Coronet 426 Hemi. I think this one is an early '60s model, but I don't know Mopars well enough to be sure and I didn't check the window tag. I do know, however, that the little old lady in Pasadena had a red one.
The fourth photo is of a '68 or '69 Malibu SS; it's got a 427 badge and the Yenko name is written all over it, but I'm doubtful it's the real deal. I include this one because my wife and I bought a (very) well used '68 Malibu convertible in '73 when we lived in Boston. Out car was the absolute antithesis of a big block SS, however, since it was equipped with a 250 CI six and three on the tree. We called it the Creampuff and had a ball with it until we had a baby girl and the car was burning more oil than gas.
Next we come to a Nova SS 396. I include it because I always liked the unique look of these cars, but also because we ordered one (a 350 SS) in the spring of '71. After waiting 7 weeks for the car, GM decided to end '71 production in the summer earlier than originally planned, and our car was dropped from the production list. We ended up buying a Camaro (the first of three) which we loved (something I can't say about every Chevy we've owned), but every time I see a Nova of this era, I feel a pang of regret.
Next comes a '69 Torino 428 Cobra Jet. We owned a '69 Mach I with the lowly Windsor 351 2V, but I test drove both a Shelby GT 500 and a '69 Mustang GT with the 428; they sure could pull - at least in a straight line.
Finally, we come to a '70 Trans Am, another model I almost bought a time or two in the '70s but never did for various reasons. I've broached the idea of getting one now, but my wife suggested that the rest of my life would be hell were I to do so.

Today, something from Iceland: The Arch at Gatklettur, here portrayed at sunrise during one of the Workshops I led in Iceland last December is one of the lesser known - but not less amazing - beautiful landscapes of Iceland. With the Leica SL, Voigtlander 15mm and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest Ultra filters.
Thank you for viewing, best regards

Unless you live in Japan, it pretty much looks like Ricoh is not doing much for it. It's still on the Japanese website, but nothing in the works for now. It looks to be a Japan only item for now. You can still find some lenses & some Q-S1 bodies at a few online retailers in the USA, but most supplies are running out. The Q7 & Q-S1 do a bit better in low light IQ being kind of usable up to ISO 3200, but in reality, ISO 800 seems to be more like the max limit.

My wife and I recently returned from a week and a half in northern England and southern Scotland, the impetus (excuse?) for the trip being to visit our son who is finishing a study-abroad semester at Lancaster University.
I decided to go compact, packing just the Q7 with an 01/02/03 lens kit plus a couple of point and shoot Fujifilms. The Fujis have definite roles -- a W3 for synchronous stereo shooting, and an F770EXR for its GPS and longer zoom, but neither of them touches the Q7 for versatility or image quality. Below are some of the Pentax shots. The whole album, including a number of cross-eye 3D pairs, is here.
Enjoyment from the trip, both photographically and generally, surpassed my expectations. At no point did I wish I'd brought a DSLR. The Q7 and lenses fit comfortably in a fanny pack. It was all quite freeing.
For anyone wondering, although we used the Manchester airport and spent some time in the city, we missed the terror drama by a few days, and learned about it while staying in Edinburgh.

The last few days I've been taking pictures around town with my trusty QS-1, mostly in the street style with the standard prime.
I took this next one with the telephoto zoom, it's moments like these where I appreciate lens interchangeability in such a small package.
Shooting like this has really made me wish Pentax would put out a firmware update to give the Q a snap focus distance option like on the Ricoh GR. If you're in manual focus and you turn the Q off and on, the focus resets to some preset distance that's not good up close.

When I think of the name Willys it immediately goes back to my old drag racing days when they ran in the A/Gas class. Short wheelbase, large horsepower cars that were a real handful at times when they went to AA/Gas and AA/Gas Supercharged.

Algonquin Park remains ice bound, and will not open for interior camping until April 28.
Not much sign of sudden change given the weather forecast. But the ice is candling and can't last a whole lot longer, at least it wouldn't if it wasn't for the predicted colder weather that's coming.

There's still lots of snow in the bush for the evening dog walk.
Around our neighfborhood I went out to my duck photography location, and was greeted by this
And the reason for "this" being the roadway was flooded, and I couldn't get where I was going , even walking.
We all wait for spring to come, but no one knows exactly what they are hopeing for. :D
