Shot on a trip to Komodo and Rinca Islands in Indonesia in November 2104.

When I was about ten years old (1956), David Attenborough had a series on UK TV called Zoo Quest for a Dragon, which culminated in the capture of a Komodo Dragon. It caught my imagination - not too many dragons in 1950s England - and my grandmother bought me the book of the series for Christmas that year.

The film is still on YouTube - this is the dragon capture sequence:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

The book got lost somewhere but the dragon stayed with me. When I moved to live in Indonesia, I managed to find a copy of the book in a secondhand bookstore and in November 2014 (almost 60 years after seeing the TV series) my wife and I went to Bali ( a 90 minute flight from our home in Java), flew on to Labuan Bajo and then sailed to Komodo and Rinca to chase the dragons.

Automatic focus on a K-3 - definitive guide?

I am delighted with my K-3 but am having trouble really understanding the various Autofocus options and frankly find the manual useless. I realise that this may be covered in parts on a number of threads but here's my question.

Is there anywhere - in this forum or elsewhere - that gives a complete and understandable account of how to use all the many options in the K3 autofocus system?

For example, what does it mean to have all these focus points? Why is this such a good thing (it's just confusing to me!)?

What is best for landscape photography - I'm guessing not AF-C?

What is best for portrait - single point on the eyes, I imagine, but then what happens if the subject moves?

As you may have realised by now, you're dealing with a beginner here. I jumped straight from an early iDSL to the K3,so I've never had any previous experience with such a complex system - which I'm sure is excellent, if you understand it.

K3 HDR options?

Apologies if this is answered in another thread but I searched and came up empty.

The K3 has four HDR options - Auto, 1, 2 and 3. The handbook doesn't explain the differences.

Does anyone know?

Glad you liked them, Skipper - I think it's a great technique, particularly, if, like me, you're colourblind!

Here's a couple more - it works for cityscapes as well:

Fixed!

Thank you monochrome. I perhaps should have said that I'm on a Mac. It didn't have that extra numeral, but, based on your advice, I trashed every k3 file I could find, redownloaded, went through the usual procedure and it's in!

Thanks again.

I'm trying to update from 1.10 to 1.11. I'm doing everything exactly the same as previous upgrades, i.e. copy to root of card, turn on with menu button held down but it just goes to the standard screen, not the firmware screen. I've tried it with different cards, newly formatted cards, different downloads, etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks all for the instant help. Just tried two of the suggestions in poor lighting with a very mobile subject - my wife is getting very excited watching the Indonesian presidential election results coming in!

All work well but it seems the best result under those circumstances is the spot AF/viewfinder.

But Brooke/Rawr - I'll need to study yours further and try it out.

Thanks again.

Thanks Adam, for the quick response. I'll give LV a shot, although I prefer to use the viewfinder, so I'll try both.

Apologies if this has been answered in an earlier thread but I need some advice/help on autofocus - and I don't find the K3 handbook much help.

For portraits, I'm finding that I will often get a sharp focus, but unfortunately not on the eyes. For other work, it all seems fine - landscapes, etc no problem.

My choice of lens is a Sigma 70mm, with a wide aperture to get a blurred background. What would be the best AF set up for such a portrait, that gives me sharp focus on the eyes even thought the sitter may be mobile??

I just took a longer look at the website -- they appear to be based in Taiwan, so it's not a question of laundering money from China. Most of their prices actually seem OK - a little more than I would expect to pay in Hong Kong - but then there's an occasional wild one, like the Pentax example at the top of this thread.

My HK supplier quotes less than that in HKD for a black version:

Pentax smcP-DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited Medium-Telephoto Auto-Focus Lens "pancake" - Digital SLRs only - Digital SLR Lenses

Maybe silver commands a premium?

It works for me on my Mac in Safari but not in Chrome. Don't understand why that should be so.

Apologies.

If you really want to see them, try kingsleyimagery.com - they're there as the "Borobudur/Prambanan" gallery, along with a load of other stuff, including, in the family section, a lot of happy snaps taken there.

My wife and I visited the Borobudur temple. I shot 400+ images, of which 68 are OK.

If anyone wants to view all 68, they can be found on:

Sorry - that's a bit misleading. It's actually an HDR colour shot, converted to "infra red" in Photoshop. You can do it in camera, I believe, if your camera will recognise infrared, by using a red filter. This article explains:

How to shoot haunting digital infrared photography | Digital Camera World

I've never tried it - partly because I can't buy filters in the size I need (82mm) here in Indonesia, but I plan to do so on my next trip to Hong Kong.
