Hasselblad Xpan or Fuji 617 as alternative to Pentax 645Z

yeh, many years ago I bought 60 rolls of velvia 50 original 220 for $1 a roll, expired 6/06. I keep it in a film freezer and still use it today with no effects of it being expired. I also had a friend who traveled to japan in 2016 and bought me 25 rolls of 220 with an exp date of 2019, which is now back of the line. I found a seller selling 35 rolls of 220 astia back in 2016 with an exp date of 2012, work perfectly. when velvia 100 was "outlawed" here i bought 40 rolls of 220 for $2 a roll back in oct with a 2018 exp date, again they are perfect. since I develop my own, its not an issue. IF film is properly stored, then it will last a long time, especially slower film. reminds me, I have some provia 400 I should shoot soon

it used to be, if you checked ebay for 220 film you could find some deals, but sadly those days seem to have passed. but I search every once in a while just for fun.

I have a fuji 617 and love it, but not really sure it would work for me in aerial photography. I have taken a few hand held, but with that camera, it is very important to make sure your horizon is level. with the bumpy ride I think you would have to deal with, you would need some real fast film. the fuji is an F8 camera at its fastest, at least the one I have, the original g617 with the 1 fixed lens. I try to stop down at least 2 stops for better resolution, so now you are talking f16 or so, F11 if really needed. up to you, but I would use a 400 speed or faster film for an experiment like that. 220 film was made for a 6x17 camera and I'm happy I still have a large stash of velvia 50 in 220. at least you can now get shanghai gp3 in 220 film fresh now.

scanning depends on what scanner you have. I have a nikon cs9000 and a flextight, which I got after I was using the nikon for years. with the nikon I had to scan as 2 6x9 shots and stitch in photoshop. with the flextight, I can scan the whole image as 1 and it gives much better results. if you are serious enough to be shooting a 6x17 camera, you need to take scanning seriously and not use an entry level flatbed

what to do with my dead 67ii

I used for many years my 67ii for tripod work. loved the results and was very sad when it developed an un-fixable (according to the 5 service centers I have sent the camera to for evaluation) electric issue which now resulted in a dead unusable camera. I found a older 6x7 MU body to replace the 67ii. I do miss the better metering in the 67ii (i got the 6x7 body cheap as it had/has a broken metering chain which I have yet to fix). the results are just as good, so I have bene happy the last few years.

but I still get sad seeing the dead body sitting in the closet. not sure why I have not tossed it out. but I have the nice wooden left had hot shoe grip and the highly sought after split prism focus screen for the 67ii. i have had many offers for both items but cant seem to sell them. maybe Im hoping that I can find a 67ii body to replace the dead one. but prices over the last few years have really, for lack of a better description, gotten out of control. 2,000+ for a body only. makes me sad I didnt buy a back up body back in 2014 when my used camera store had one for $600. anyway...

should I still hold on to the accessories and hope that prices normalize or should I pass them along to someone who can use and appreciate them? life is full of pointless choices isn't it? :)

you cant use the older type prism on the 67ii, only the prism specifically for the 67ii will work, or more importantly, fit. you could damage the camera (specifically the contacts that the newer prism uses) if you try to force it on

my 67ii had issues about 2 years ago. i have yet to be able to find anyone who can work on them. there are no parts available, so you will need to find another camera to take parts from if you need to have parts replaced. wound up getting an older 67 model to use instead. now I have an oversized doorstop.

will monitor this thread to see if anyone has a possible service location

Breaking into medium and want/need advice

i was in the same position many years ago when i went to MF. my first question would be, what do you plan to do with your images? if its just scan and web, then 645.
next, if you are planning on printing, how large? there is nothing better for printing then film real-estate. bigger is better. but you will need to spend some cash on a great tripod. DO NOT be cheap here, a good tripod is a must if you want great images with your 6x7.

I would be on the lookout for a nice 6x7 with mirror lock up. use it and go from there. you can get a 645n as a backup or to shoot color or B&W while you shoot the other in the 6x7. get the lens adapter and you can use the 6x7 lenses on the 645, makes bag packing simple and lighter.

Sturdy enough tripod for Pentax 67ii

I have been using an Induro classic, the induro clt303l, that goes to 7 feet high without using the center column raise, along with an arca swiss ball head. never had any issues with shake, even with the 300mm ED and a 1.4 extender. very sturdy and light (not the ball head) . You can get an extra long base plate that will be long enough to bolt the camera body and the 300mm lens to the same plate and that will give you even more stability.

67ii repair. no more parts available, so now what?

update,

I got notice from 2 other repair centers, 1 being Nippon in NYC. They both confirm that there are no longer any parts to fix or repair any pentax 67 models, especially the electronic stuff in the 67ii. So now im off to find a good quality 67 late model. figured since the electronics seem to be the main issues people have the 67ii models, it should last longer. grab a ugly one if it works for parts!

it does work on bulb, for one image. basically, any speed slower than the sync speed, the mirror locks up and you have to wind the whole roll, take out the batteries and then reboot so to speak. as long as you keep speeds faster than 1/30, the camera works. shutter curtain issue along with mirror issue ive been told. sucks to be me.

so now what. the repair place that has the best rep for fixing 67ii, a lot wont work on them, and the place that has always fixed my cameras, has had my 67ii for over 4 months now. they emailed last night saying they cant fix it now because they can not find the required parts. hmmm, that sucks

what to do now? look for a parts camera to use as to transplant parts from? haven't found 1 under 1,000. while the camera still works, only at speeds faster than 1/60, keep it and use it for limited shoots. I'm at a loss

the parts are for the film transport and the mirror mechanism. really bummed as it was my backpacking landscape camera. They have been looking for over 2 months for the parts and have had no luck.

is a 645D worth buying today?

I do not need high ISO. I will be shooting at base iso for 95% of what I shoot. I never got the point of being able to to shoot at ISO 1 million or whatever it is just because I can. kinda like shooting digital is free, as in no film costs, so I will shoot 500 pictures of my feet, my cat, the ground only because I can. hmmmm

I just see a digital camera as another tool in the chest. I will use it just like I do my film cameras. last time I went to yosemite I shot a total of 16 rolls of film, so like 150 or less images, while a guy nest to me for some time bragged out loud that he shot like 1000 images in the last 10 minutes only because he could. I aim for a 75% keeper rate, so I shoot very subjectively.

yes size does matter, in terms of sensor size. and I have no desire to buy into another system. I dont really expect much of a quality gain in output from a pentax MF system and a fuji or hasselblad. Im not a feature guy. I would use manual focus even if I have auto focus lenses, just like the control it gives me, so I dont need 1000 focus points.

it was just an idea, given the price point has dropped to make it a viable option when going digital. yes its an older model, but does that matter? All I care about is the end results and I am guessing that the 645D could help me produce them.

I'm a film shooter. I have a dig camera that i bought 8 years ago for things like little league and for travel a little.. but I primarily shoot landscapes and sometimes portraits, which I still shoot on film and enlarge in a dark room. I just love the results when printed and for me thats why I shoot picts, to print and hang on a wall for display. I hardly ever post online. but I do scan negs. I have a 6x9 ektar neg that I scanned and had printed vie a lightjet recently and the results where great.

so I thought I would take another look at digital again for landscapes. when I shoot 35mm I use nikon and my digital camera is a nikon D700 which gave great results when used. so my first look was at a D850. But I have a pentax 645N, which does not really get used, along with a P67ii which is my primary tripod camera. I never really liked 4x5 or 8x10 as Im a hiker and liked the portability of MF cameras. I have the pentax 67 to 645 adapter and have used the 67 lenses on my 645n and got great results. So my thoughts also went to the 645Z. with the reduced pric it is a very interesting option. but the thought of paying a lot of cash for a new digital camera, not liking it and then forcing myself to use it....

so a local add for a very low shutter count for a 645D came into view. A fair price that if its not for me I can resell it for what i pay or a small loss if needed. yes its a CCD sensor. But shooting landscapes on a tripod as well as portraits with lights, I will shoot at the primary ISO 95% of the time, so no real need for high ISO shooting, its not me. I did read the 850 vs 645z thread and there are some good points. But I'm wondering how a 645D would work for me and for what I shoot. I would have to rethink my printing output, but it is what it is. the 645D would be used for color only as I love shooting B&W film and never digital replacing it as B&W digital . the end results just aren't there IN MY OPINION (this is not meant to start a dig vs film war. I just prefer B&W film results. sorry for the shouting).

lots to think about, too many questions. so, is a D645 relevant today or not? I dont imagine I will ever print larger than 20x24 if that helps. when I enlarge, the biggest I usually do is 16x20.

many thanks.

is the pentax 67ii NOT a cold weather camera?

its not the cold weather that is the issue. I ran an empty roll of backing paper thru at all shutter speeds. was 80+ yesterday. at all speeds slower than 1/30 i got the error code. so for now if i need to use the camera, its color film for me as my shutter speeds are usually over 1/60 a second or faster. gonna wait a month before I send it out for repair as we are getting into the tree color changing season.

just wish I could find a way to fix/repair it myself

---------- Post added 10-15-18 at 10:40 AM ----------

interesting........

I took out the camera to play with it a little more, trying to trouble shoot it. same issues with slow speeds. Tried bulb, and it does not lock up, returning the mirror right away. so thought, maybe its a magnet issue with the mirror or some other "charge" issue with the magnets. So tried using the ps time switch to see if maybe the magnets are dead. mirror stayed up. huh. closed the switch and did it again, this time letting it stay open for 5 minutes. closed the mirror, took out the batteries and let the camera sit for 5 minutes. put batteries back in, reloaded some backing paper and....

it seems to be working now. huh. maybe there was a charge or some other thing messing up the magnet thats used to hold open the mirror, or some other issue. but the Timed mirro up seems to maybe have reset the magnet (at least thats what Im hoping). any thoughts on what happened??

update,

I used the camera for a long time before the same issue came up again. but I think I narrowed it down. it only happens with slow shutter speeds of 1/30 or slower. by guess is its a mirror issue, that holding it up for the entire curtain to open is the cause. this is only a guess as the sync speed is 1/30 and it only happens with this speed or slower. wasted 2 rolls of APX 25 on location to figure it out, but hopefully it was worth it

I contacted pentax and they no longer support or work on any film cameras and Eric does not work on the 67ii as well. so I gotta find either a way to fix the issue myself or find a repair location that knows the issue and can fix it.

any thoughts?

i was taught, and use, the rule of doubling focal lengths. so if I went out with only two and maybe three lenses, my kit is either the 55mm and 105, with the 200 added sometimes, or the 75mm and the 165 2.8, which is close enough. I always try to have either the 105 or 165 as its nice to have one fast lens in the set up.

67 vs 645 digital

I just printed a few days ago an Ektar shot taken on my P67ii with the 75mm f4.5 lens, printed to 16x20 on kodak endura metallic. my friend took the same shot same from the same tripod with his nikod D8?? something camera. he also printed his on his epson ink joy printer.. I scanned with my nikon coolscan 9000 to an uncompredd TIFF as i wanted to see how much loss would come from scanning vs a wet pinrt, so I had BAY photo print it for.

looking at the prints his was a sharper print, but thats expected as digital can get sharper, but it was bordering on too sharp, you know the over-sharpened look many did users go for. but where i totally destroyed his prints was in tonality. just many more smooth color transitions a much more natural look. A small part of the print had some blown out sunlight, no way to get around it, but the digital made it a total mess while the film rolled off nicely and made it much less distracting. not sure how much time he spent on post. i have my scanning workflow down pretty good. yeh it takes a while but I start the scan, go watch the hockey game and come back when its done. do a little spot healing, a small amount of sharpening and Im done. a total of 5 minutes in the digi world of post but some is needed if only to resize.

there are pluses for each system but for me its all about the finished print. if im just gonna look at it on my computer than out comes my rarely used but still very functional 10 year old digital camera. but if im doing a day trip to yosemite or tahoe and I KNOW im gonna print, then I bring my film cameras, as FOR ME, I much prefer film prints over digital.

I just picked up this lens to finally finish my wish list for the 67 system. I took it out and used it on a number of occasions while shooting the last few days. but it seems my lens will focus past infinity, which is a drag as I shoot 90% landscapes. It seems that all my other lenses in the 67 system have a calibrated hard stop at infinity. So I set the lens to infinity, make sure focus is on, which it always is, and fire away. But with the 300mm ED, focusing past can be a real drag. I know there are reasons to have past infinity focus. But Im wondering if its my lens only or if its a lens design. Great lens by the way, and you lose nothing when using the grey 1.4 tele-converter!

so does your lens focus past infinity?

i was curious one day so did a little hand held experiment ( i was just really finishing a roll i shot in yosemite that i wanted to develop). I took 2 shots handheld. I composed the first, locked up the mirror, tried to hold the camera still to keep the framing, and then shot. next shot was hand held with no mirror lockup. i used the 105 lens with a shutter of 1/125. the 2nd shot clearly had some motion blur in it but the shot with mirror lock-up came out fine. no i did not enlarge the image hugely to check, just a good scan to check. yes it was without motion blur but the framing was off a little from using mirror up and waiting 2 seconds to shoot.

the feeling of the camera was clear to me that the mirror moving up, hitting the bumpers caused quite a lot of camera vibration. with using the mirror up, the vibration was a lot less. try it yourself without film in the camera and see if you notice the difference
