Excellent setup Nick, it will surely give you more keepers...Do post the images taken with this setup..

here's one shot in the Kumaon Himalayas..Did some cloning, inscreased saturation..image looks softer coz did some heavy noise reduction..the bird is Plum headed parakeet..

" target="_blank">

guess what- the orginal photo was taken at 6 Mega pixels and I did some heavy cropping to bring it to 1.17 MPs..and I still managed to get an excellent 8x10 print with it..

Actually I'm pretty ashamed of handhelding these images! ;) One in 20 images is as sharp as the above..If only I had a decent tripos for macro, EVERY shot would have been like this! :D

Thanks Gus, I'm glad you like it. :) Yes, the fly was extremely tolerant. I took atleast a dozen of images, thanks to the SR, most of them were shar, but the sharpness was lost once I zoomed in. This was the only image which was tack sharp. I've realised that a tripod is a MUST for natural light macro photography..:)

Yes, I am aware about the focal length remaining constant just the FOV being changed..

Thanks, this is what I wanted to hear..So I shouldn't bank on using a 300/2.8 with a 2x but resort to it as a last option..

Actually I do plan to do lot of landscape work - Its far more affordable than the telephoto. I have already decided on 12-24. Thanks for endorsing it. interesting to see that you didn't mention any verysion of the 'kit lens' e.g 18-55 or 17-70 (or even 16-50)..I had came up with this conclusion that 12-24 + 50/1.4 is way better than any of these kit lenses..

Based on your own field inputs and reading many threads, books, I've come up with this model-
1. light weight/daily travel kit- 12-24 + 50/1.4 + 70-300 zoom (doing 1:2 macro)
2. Dedicated kit- 12-24 + 50/1.4 + 150/2.8 macro (or 180/3.5) + 300/2.8 ( along with 1.4x)
Of course tripod, flash etc etc..

My current dilemma was whether to go for Tamron 70-300 zoom or go for sigma 50-500..Have decided to go for tammy coz it will almost complete my light weight kit and give a decent macro too (12-24 will come soon too)..then will take a long break and buy a 300/2.8 and the 150 macro..:) easier said than done though! he he..

Thanks again :)

Lens options for wildlife and Macro

I will be returning the Super Takumar 50/4 macro to its owner and hence will be back to the 18-55mm and k300/4 ..I'm searching for different lens options. I need
1. light, AF, tele zoom lens to complement my kit lens
2. macro lens.

The Tamron 70-300/4-5.6 Di LD gives a 1:2 macro (same as that 50/4 macro) and gives a greater working distance too. Agreed that the IQ will be sigificantly lower than a dedicated macro lens and a super tele, but it is so light that I can carry it everyday to the university too..It complements my kit lens perfectly..Choice before me-

1. Buy the 70-300 now and then buy a 300/2.8 (or a 500/4.5) and a 180/3.5 (or a 150/2.8) macro later (1-2 years).
2. Buy sigma 50-500 now and live without a macro for a year and then buy 150/2.8( or 180/3.5) later.

I don't want to upgrade any lens I buy. I know very well that if I buy a 50-500 now, I'll want to upgrade it very soon..;)

I wish to have two kits- a lighter one useful for travel photography and a heavier one for dedicated nature photorgaphy.
light weight kit - 18-55 + 70-300 + 50/1.4..(it will cover 18-300mm and give a 1:2 macro and serve well in low light)
Dedicated kit- 12-24+ 50/1.4 + 150/2.8 + 300/2.8 (or 500/4.5)..

All comments/suggestions are appreciated. :)

Hrishi :)

Thanks a million for the detailed reply- I learnt more from it than after reading countless articles on wildlife lenses..I have few queries though
1. the 600-840mm you mentioned is on a 35mm or a APS-C sensor? Coz getting a 800 is not that expensive and heavy (zoomes like 50-500)
2. How does 300/2.8 + 2x TC compare with 500/4 + 1.4TC? Does the loss in IQ more than the benefit of having an extra stop? if U were to buy only one super tele lens, which one would it be- a 500/4 or a 300/2.8?

3. Pros like John Shaw have said that zooms are no longer inferior to primes. then why do pros prefer a 300/4 with a 1.4 TC to a 100-400/5.6 zoom?
4.I plan to use two bodies on the field. SO If I mount a 150/2.8 macro (with focus limiter) on one and a 300/2.8 (or 500/4.5) on the other, will I miss a zoom? (It depends on the situation of course, but I'm asking for general situations)..

I wish to be a professional nature photographer but won't buy more than 2 lenses for willife- a macro and a super tele..I won't be buying the lenses any time soon, but my current buying options force me to consider a longer time frame..;)
I wish to buy the right lens first time itself so that i wont have to upgrade it. That's why I dont want to buy 50-500 (even though I can afford one in immediate future) as I know I'll feel like upgrading to a better lens..;)

Thanks again..

New low-end model Pentax K2000D will be close to Photokina

I think Live view with a tilt screen would be very beneficial for K2000D..It would compete not with Entry level DSLRS but also with High end Prosumers..:)..

Also, K2000D's AUTO settings need to work very well, i.e. straight out of camera jepgs etc should look steller punchy - like those from the K200D.. not much scope for customization, PP..also, the trademark underexposure of Pentax needs to be given a break (at least of K2000D)..

But seriously, issue is not about products..Issue is about marketing..Young people need to be made aware of a brand called Pentax which can give them quality of a Canikon at much cheaper cost..

Marc,

You have done so much wildlife photography with the primes like 300/2.8 or 500/4.5 or so, How many times in the field did you wish if you had a zoom? like say sigma 120-300/2.8 (I know it doesn't come in Pk mount)..

thanks

I strongly agree! :) :)

Though I'm not sure Weather seal is needed for an entry level dslr..As long as it is $500 with kit lens and $800 with the 55-300 combo, it will sell like hot cakes in india provided they market it aggressively..;)

Thanks to all for your feedback..I didn't expect this image would receive favourable reviews..:) If it wouldn't have been this thread, I wouldn't have thought that the image was good enough to show to people..clearly this shows the importance of posting images on the forums..:)..btw, the grain in the sky was unintensional, but I liked it too, hence didn't soften the image..
