(The Big shock) CANON 7D - NIKON D300S & PENTAX K-x ISO PERFORMANCE (The Big shock)

If you're shooting indoors with a flash at ISO 100, you'll be having no ambient light in the shot. Black backgrounds and people lit up like christmas trees does not a good shot make!

Go to a store and play with a 7D. Odds are you'll make up your mind pretty quickly. Canon is definately a more expensive system than Pentax, but for all good things, you must pay :)

That was the reason I jumped from Pentax to Nikon. The AF system just let me down and wouldn't take those shots of my kids etc that I needed. My Nikon just snaps on instantly and makes taking photos so much more enjoyable (for me). Granted it's a high end model, but like you noticed, even the lower end Canon/Nikon's are faster than the Pentax models.

If you don't have any issues with the Pentax flash system, what would you gain from the Canon one? Basing a decision on what you've heard only is pretty silly.

High ISO on the 7D will be better than the K-7. You'll get more higher end telephotos, but they cost money. Which lens in particular you looking at?

Video on SLRs is still not very easy to use.

As for working professionally, you'll be based on the images you produce, not the label on your camera.

Now, if you had said you wanted to move because you wanted the FPS, the superior AF system of the 7D and the MP, I'd say go for it!!

Sigma 24 mm 1.8 or Sigma 24-70 mm 2.8?

I agree that the second last shot is very nice. You should realize however, that most lens could have taken that shot. The 'niceness' of the shot in this case in my opinion is more down to the photographer, than the lens.

K7 high ISO - will it be competitive?

The problem with those images is they're taken in a well lit environment. Not many of us here would be shooting ISO 3200 with that much light available.

Take candlelit scene at ISO 3200 with say a D700 and a K2000 and at say 8x10 print size, you will definitely see a huge difference.

Also, the D3x isn't known for fantastic high ISO performance, it's not what it's really good at (which is resolving an insane amount of detail).

There is a law of diminishing returns, like all technology. If you want the best, you have to pay for it. Some of us don't mind spending a few extra thousand dollars to get a camera that we really like. And lets face it, if people didn't buy the latest and greatest, the camera companies wouldn't be getting return on their R&D and we wouldn't see better sensors etc.

D300 focuses a LOT faster in 'low' light compared to the K20D. It's not also just the body that dictates what camera you buy, but the lens/flash selection also.

Pros and cons of the Pentax KM/2000

The post I replied to was the usual Pentaxiam post of 'Nikon's are blurry/soft/no detail', which I decided to have a go at. There isn't much difference in picture quality in the D90 v K20D. Heck, all DSLRs these days are awesome. It's just gets up my goat when people decide that because they've got X brand, all other brands are inferior. I'm pretty sure nearly anyone would struggle to tell the difference on a photo taken with a D90/K20D/50D once it's been processed.

Pros and cons of the Pentax KM/2000

Keep fooling yourself that Pentax is the only good DSLR out there with detail at high ISOs

And on topic, I found that using my 'old' K20D, ISO 800 was normally my limit. I got a couple of decent 1600 shots out, but that was when the light was very good, which is normally not when I need the higher ISO :D

And back off topic for a second, it is so nice being able to shoot at ISO1600 with virtually no noise on the D700, it's just a pity they're all blurry because I'm using a Nikon

Pentax vs. Canon AF performance

If you actually read the whole post and not just found a bit to pick out, you'd realise that I actually compared it to a Canon 40D, which is in the same bracket as the K20D IMO.

As for your comment about spending lots of money; Why do Pentax owners* in general seem to hate it when someone goes to a different brand. They seem to think that spending more on a better camera is stupid, because Pentax cameras should provide everything EVERY photographer needs. Just because Pentax lens and bodies are cheaper, it doesn't mean they're the best. I can acknowledge that the Pentax system is very good, but it doesn't offer what I want, which is clean high ISO and fast AF. Just because these bits don't bother you, doesn't mean they don't bother me.

If I have the money to spend on a better camera system and I want to do it, I will. The fact is, the D700 IS a lot better than the K20D. Yes, it costs more, but that's the price you pay for performance. Pentax is just another brand, it's not a religion.

*Stereotyping here, but it's the general theme I get when reading lots of posts on here and DPReview.

Pentax vs. Canon AF performance

I'm changing systems because Pentax AF isn't good enough for me. Whilst many members on here jump up and down if you so much as say a bad thing about Pentax, it's AF is quite frankly not up to scratch compared to Canon and Nikon. All suggestions of Manual Focus/Catch in focus etc are simple realising that the AF isn't good enough. For anyone who thinks it nail perfect focus and the other systems don't, that too isn't true. A Canon 40D will acquire focus faster and have just the same amount of in focus shots as a K20D (personal experience).

Of course, if AF speed isn't the only thing to look at in a camera system, but for me, it's a limiting and annoying factor. I've got no doubt my Nikon D700 will sort this annoying issue for me out. On the negative, lens are way more expensive, but the 24-70 and 70-200 combo is drool worthy.

A camera is a tool, if a particular brand doesn't fit your needs, switch. I don't really understand brand loyalty.

K200D autofocus modes - speed and accuracy

Unfortunately, Pentax DSLRs are not that quick at focusing in low light compared to Canon/Nikon. You'll probably get a few people tell you to use different batteries and the like (which may make it faster than it currently is for you), but will never make it achieve the same speeds as say a Canon 40D. Part of the reason for this is that the Pentax AF double checks focus before showing the shot as in focus. In normal outdoor light, it will be on par with the mid level Canon/Nikon's, but in low light, Pentax are really slow at focusing.

This lens in Canon mount uses the body motor. And it's not just that lens, the nifty fifty is a lot quicker than my FA 35, especially on low contrast areas.

In regards to accurate focus, the 40D shots do focus accurately, just as much as the K20D from what I can tell.

Don't get me wrong, I love my K20D, it's just that indoors, it's focusing isn't as quick as the competition.

K20D flaws

I've actually used all three cameras and I can tell you that the 400D and the 40D are quicker at focusing. My sister owns both of them and I have the K20D. When using the Tamron 28-75mm lens on the 40D and the K20D and attempting to lock focus on something inside, the 40D won hands down, every time. Half the time the K20D didn't even lock focus, just kept hunting. My wife and my sister and husband have all played with all the camera's and they all say the same thing, that the K20D is a lot slower to focus indoors. Outdoors there isn't as much in it, but it's still slower. The 40D especially has a very swift solid focusing feel to it. It just locks into position very fast.

Have you used a 40D before? If not, try it before telling my I'm spouting crap.

Biggest flaw is it's slow AF speed in low light. A Canon 400D/40D shits all over it. Other than that, it's perfect :D

Thanks for the comments, I'd like to say he takes after me, but it's his mother ;) He normally doesn't like standing still for the camera, I just got lucky on this one. At least he looks, my 1 year old just turns away the second you get the camera out. :) I love the higher ISO IQ of the K20D compared to my old GX10, just so much cleaner.

Likewise :P
