Am I crazy to think about selling my 35 Limited for a 24-70 Sigma?

HD 35mm Limited was my first Limited lens. Brand new in the box from B&H, Christmas gift from my wife. I had craved that lens, along with the Sigma 70mm Macro, so badly. My wife said pick one, and I went for the 35. Never fell in love with the FL. Great lens on all fronts, but found myself looking for reasons to use it. I thought it would be great for flowers, but I had to get so close that I ran into shadow issues, and frankly, while it wasn't as "nice" of a lens, my Sigma 50mm EX DG Macro saw far more use, and the same quality results. Better APSC FL for me. I ended up trying the Sigma 70mm too, and while it was a stellar lens, the 100 WR was what I always ended up using. If you think the 24-70 is a good FL for you, I say go for it. Your 100mm should have you covered nicely for macro and long portrait.

Nice shot, man. The Tamron 90 was always a favorite of mine (right behind the D-FA 100 WR). The VC version of the Tamron is my number one lens on my D610 :)

What lens should you have brought along?

When I had my K-3, I always had my D-FA 100 WR and my HD 21mm. When it was dusty, and i didn't feel like swapping lenses, made me wish I had packed my Sigma 17-50 HSM. It was surprising good for flower closeups, and that's what I used the 100 WR for. Since moving to Nikon, kind of the same boat -- Tamron 90mm VC Macro, and my 24-120mm F4. It was really dusty at this year's Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, and learning a lesson from my previous frustrating experiences, I rolled with the 24-120 the rest of the way, and had no complaints on the output.

K50 reliability issues??

Definitely get the extended warranty. I had the aperture block failure issue at about the 11 month mark. That was at around 10k on the shutter. I put another 5k on the shutter before I sold it, and never another issue. Great camera, but there have been enough issues that the warranty is a good idea, and it's reasonable in price (even though they've raised that price. Or, you could look at a few more bucks, and pickup a KS-2. I enjoyed the KS-1 as a backup, and the KS-2 feels way better in the hands. The 20MP sensor is really good, not to mention all of the other great features. Just a thought. And regarding the white body, my K-50 was a stormtrooper, and I had zero issues with wear or marks on that white body. Great looking camera, especially with the Limited primes :)

Maybe that same firmware update will enable LV AF, as well.

I would pop the battery out, dismount the lens, and check the contacts on the lens. Sounds like it has an issue if it won't focus in LV on a known good working camera like your K-3.

focusing screen having dust & fibres

Has always been a never-ending battle for me. They drive my OCD crazy, but I've learned to just live with them, as it's usually too much hassle (for me) to pull the screen, take the time to carefully clean...and then a week later, another stray fiber appears. So long as it isn't on the sensor, and it's not too huge, I've learned to just leave them be, Not easy though -- lol

Wife taking me on a glacier cruise - need a longer lens

I would personally want something wider to bring with the longer lens. I've been on a couple of glacier cruises outside of Whittier (before I had any interest in photography...) and the sheer massiveness of the glacier fields would demand a wide lens for me. Especially if the seas are decent, and your captain can get you in close. I remember an instance where we were all intent listening to the glaciers groan, the sound intensified -- and we all sat there slack-jawed as a football field sized section of ice broke away. crashing into the water. Lot of blue ice fields too. It's always nice to pack light, but the 55-300 is such a great bang for the buck lens in any of the three variations, I would bring it for sure, but would also look into a nice used Tamron 17-50, or if the budget allowed -- a DA 16-85. Even a disposable hero like the 18-55 would be nice to have in the pocket. I've owned three copies of that lens, and stopped down, it makes nice enough images -- especially for the price. The K-5II is excellent, so you're already covered there. Put the money into the glass IMO. If I still had my Pentax gear, for a cruise like that, I would have brought my Tamron 70-200, and either the Sigma 17-50 (kind of a big lens compared to the Tamron counterpart, but made nice images), or I would have packed my HD DA 21. Reasonably wide on crop, and would have delivered some awesome colors with the blue ice. Have fun!

Macro flowers/weeds/etc., then nature in general (mountains, sky, pastures, skyward tree shots, etc.), and then people portraits (getting more into this). Pretty much like shooting everything, but those are the favorites. I'm happy with just about anything that I can turn into an isolated bokeh shot, and flowers really drive that for me.

K5IIs or K3 ?

Agreed on this. I loved my K-3 when it was bright out, but didn't like the noise when I had to dial the ISO up over 800. I briefly owned the KS-1, and while it wasn't a camera that was great to shoot for long outings, I really liked the balance between resolution/noise with that 20MP sensor. If I were to buy Pentax again, I would take a strong look at a KS-2 TBH.

With good form and good glass, both of those cameras are a slight step up due to the lack of AA filter, but honestly speaking, not such a jump that it would blow any of those cameras away. Every one of those machines can produce excellent images on all fronts. You should post some images that aren't making the grade, and see what folks think. There are lots of factors, especially with form, and front/back focusing of lenses. I've owned the K-50 and K-3, and both gave me plenty of great shots when my technique was on point.

Which Macro, smc P-D FA 50 or HD 35 Limited?

I've owned nearly all of the Pentax AF macro lenses, as well as a few Sigmas, and the Tamron 90. Longer FL always dominated my usage. %0 on crop was just fine for flowers, and while I liked my HD 35, same sentiments as some of the other posters. Super-sharp, great rendering, all of that stuff, but just not nearly as useful a FL for macro, for me. Onboard flash up close is tough too. I sold mine, and never looked back.

Mine was eBay, as well. 6th Ave. was the packager on both occasions. The lenses were of the smaller variety (HD 21mm & DA 50mm), so not a lot of weight slamming around. I would be a lot more nervous buying a larger lens (70-200, 60-250, etc.).

Purchased two lenses from them, including an HD 21mm. Both lenses were received just fine, no issues. However, the packing on both was crappy. Couple of air pillows in a box that was too large = lens box bouncing around inside. I emailed them on both occasions, letting them know that I had no damage or decentering issues, but was not happy with the packaging. They apologized both times, and thanked me for my feedback. Purchases were about 4 months apart.
