Just out of warranty, 1 issue and 1 maybe...

Thanks for the quick replies - that is reassuring. I did see a thread about mirror issues here before posting - sorry, I should have looked closer and I would have realised that was my issue!

I guess I should have checked the forums sooner, rather than being prompted by an email about that 3 million post giveaway!

Will go to FW 1.11 shortly.

We have a K-3 which is 12 months plus about 2-3 weeks old. I could make the usual excuses about being too busy, but I didn't raise my concerns with Pentax within the warranty period. I will give them a call tomorrow (or the Oz distributor CR Kennedy here in Adelaide) to see if they will help me. Anyway, I thought I would mention the issues here to see if anyone has seen anything similar.

The first issue. On a few occasions I have seen the camera get into a mode where all images have a strange colour cast to them. Resetting the settings gets the camera back to normal. Investigating further, I used the Pentax DCU 5 software to look at RAW images. (I don't currently have any other software for this). In the Custom Image menu I noticed that the "good" images have the Bright setting (which is what the camera should have had), and "bad" images are all set to Cross Processing. It has occurred to me that I may have accidentally pressed keys on the back of the camera to change to cross processing (right arrow, then left arrow would do it). I think it's unlikely I would accidentally do this exact same thing maybe 4 times, but it's possible.

The second issue is more definite. While using the camera, it suddenly began continuously releasing the shutter at a rapid rate. I couldn't get it to stop, and even turning off the power switch didn't stop it. I had to remove the battery. On replacing the battery all was normal. I expected 100+ images to have been captured while the camera was doing this, but there were none, just the ones I had taken. This problem has never returned.

The camera was running FW 1.01 when issue 1 was seen. I then upgraded to 1.03, and don't recall if issue 1 was seen again. Issue 2 happened while runing 1.03. [EDIT - just cecked, and it's now up to 1.11! I didn't see anything relevant to my problems in the changes.]

Any thoughts on these things would be appreciated, thanks.

Which SD card for K3?

I never shoot in continuous mode, so I don't care about burst performance. I do care about responsiveness when viewing / zooming captured images, deleting, etc. I have upgraded from an old K100d, so the K3 is already impressive even though I'm using a Sandisk Ultra (I think?) card. The speed in scanning through the images (left/right) is fantastic compared to what I'm used to, but deleting still could be quicker. I'm guessing a card with faster write speed would help me here?

With the K100d I would cull out dud shots mostly on the computer because it was painful on the camera. With the K3, with its bigger screen and better speed, it's the reverse!

I have just returned to these forums after a few YEARS away. I can't believe this thread is still going!!!

I found some images I posted on pages 7, 8 and 14 of this thread - I'll have to dust off the old Takumars again some time when I get a chance!

K100D Batteries - Finally a solution

I know this is an old thread.

Can anyone please confirm the above? I can't see this in the menus of a K100D or the K100D Super, nor in the manual for the Super.

Firmware is 1.02 on the K100D and 1.0.0 on the Super. I don't see any firmware updates for the Super on the Pentax site, so I assume there are none?

Thanks!

Photo management/editing software for COMPUTER newbie?

My brother has recently bought a DSLR, having been a pretty decent film SLR photographer for decades. It may seem unusual, but he has managed to escape using computers up until now. He does have a Canon print/scan/copy machine, which he has previously used as a copier (getting great results enlarging photos etc), and is now using it to print images from his DSLR's memory card.

Obviously the time has come to progress his technical skills. I am setting up a PC for him, and am wondering what software to install for managing and editing photos.

His background is not technical but he is an intelligent person who likes to read the manual and learn every feature, and as he is now retired he has the time to work everything out. I fully expect him to teach me a thing or two after a while! I think a modest but not too limited set of features will be required in the software.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Macro - P&S...?

I need to recommend a digital camera to someone who is intelligent but completely computer illiterate, but is well versed in using a manual film SLR. He has a copier/printer which accepts memory cards. His usage includes macro photography, with maybe 1 inch objects filling the frame. He's been using a Minolta 35mm SLR with macro filters.

I am going to demo my Pentax DSLR, and he has seen the near-macro that my Sigma 17-70 can do. It can almost focus on objects touching the filter.

However, I'm wondering if there are any compact cameras that can do reasonable macro.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I haven't been following this, but is the K30D any more than rumours?

The reason I'm asking is exactly as you mention - price drops on current models. Thinking about an upgrade for my K100d......

I just saw your shot of this lens on the Takumar thread and then again here. Amazing shot! and good to hear how you managed it. A lot more gear + knowhow than I have access to.

Mike, thanks for this info - I hadn't heard about it. I googled a bit but am still confused... hence my many questions! :)

Why does this work? Is the purpose of the contacts documented somewhere? Is it only the k100d that has this issue? Will I lose infinity focus?

As I (perhaps unlike you) also use KA mount lenses, maybe it's easier for me to just use exposure compensation.

bruloup, those pumpkins are beautiful!

A quick few with my "new" 135/3.5. The k100d underexposes with this lens, so I added 1.5EV, which seems to be somewhere near right, sometimes.

not what i'd call a cosy looking home, but around the corner from me

Screw Mount Question
Posted By the_snark

I'm far from an expert, and I'm sure I'll be corrected in an instant if wrong, but by far the most common screw mount thread size is M42, i.e. 42mm diameter by 1mm thread pitch. This is what you want - it's the size used by Pentax and numerous other lens and camera makers. There is an older M37 standard, but that is far less common.

If you already have a screw mount adaptor (which I'm guessing you don't if you are asking this question), you could bring that and try it on the lens. Failing that, you could see if there's an old screw mount SLR in the shop, and see if the lens fits it. Another way is to measure the thread to see if it's about 42mm in diameter.

M42 info at Wikipedia: M42 lens mount

What was the lens BTW?

Super Taks VS. S-M-C Taks?

OK, I just received my Super Takumar 135/3.5 in the mail, and it doesn't have the product code on the Auto/Manual switch. Can anyone tell me, from these photos (e.g. form the serial number), whether it's an early or late Super Tak?

I'm just a baby member of this club, but today I received my 2nd Takumar, a Super 135/3.5, in the mail! I am absolutely rapt at the condition. Original caps and case, and a filter not mentioned in the auction, which looks like it has always been attached, for just over US$30. It really does look like it was almost never used. :)

It's dark and late, and I'm tired, so here are just a couple of shots - I used my 55/1.8 and new 135 to take photos of each other.

It's a lot easier to take a hand held shot, inside my house, at night, of the 135, with the 55 attached to the camera, than the other way around!

BTW my 100d seems to underexpose by 1-1.5 stops in AV mode with the 135... but I need to test in real light.

Because the sellers can't be bothered looking into shipping costs, I bet. I suppose it's their perogative, as this is not a public service.

FYI, in case anyone is interested... shipping from US to Australia costs about the same as domestic US.

Interesting - is the product code shown on the lens? I don't have my 55 here to check. Just wondering how to check which one my Super Tak 135 is when it arrives. Or can you tell from the serial no?

Aren’t the Super-Multi-Coated, as opposed to those labelled SMC, the best of both worlds? I only have one Tak, a Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) 55/1.8, bought from these forums, in beautiful condition, and I love it. It has the rippled metal focusing ring.

However, I am also eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Super 135/3.5 in the mail! :)

This made me wonder what hyperfocal meant, so I went away and found out. Thanks for prodding me to go digging!

Sounds like a very useful approach for quick shooting. With a Takumar, I guess the exposure is pretty easy, as you just stop the lens down and let Av mode choose the shutter speed.

Australia - really??? That's nice to see! I'm wondering why though - do you know of a cost effective way to ship here? If so, please tell as that will benefit us Australians. :)

Just for interest, how much was the Tak 135 before it sold?
