I think the best value vs weight would be:
Something wide angle - Probably Sigma 10-20
Tamron 17-50
Pentax 55-300mm or 70-200 f2.8
3-4 small prime lenses (Since they are so small and light for pentax cameras)
I really don't see why someone would need much more than that. There would be too much overlap.
If you're looking to photograph wildlife, then I would probably look for a 2nd body and keep a 400mm prime or a sigma 150-500mm on it.

Can the K5 do time lapse? Is there a menu setting for this?
Or do I need to purchase an intervalometer?
If so, what does everyone recommend as a cheap solution?

Then what about the Autofocus?
I understand there is an enormous difference between the K5 and K3 (Autofocus performance).
Where did the giant leap occur? In the K5iis? Or did the giant leap in technology (speaking only about autofocus) occur in the K3?

Also, the pentax 50mm f1.8 (with autofocus) is nearly identical in focal range to a Nikon Df shooting with 85mm.
You can ABSOLUTELY duplicate the above shot with that lens.
Plus, the pentax 50mm lens is very inexpensive.

You just described an UltraWide angle lens. Not a fisheye.
The Sigma 10-20mm is one of the best ultra wide angles you can get. I greatly prefer it over the 8-16mm.

The Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art.
This isn't just one of the best lenses in this focal ranges, this is one of the best lenses ever made.
It can be pricey at around $900 US. But there simply is no comparison.
Its in a completely different league.

Focal range makes a HUGE difference.
Depth of field changes based on focal range. So standing closer to your subject with a 35mm and further away with a 50mm (Both at f1.8) will still yield 2 slightly different pictures.
However, there is an even bigger difference. The background.
A 35mm will have a MUCH wider view of a background (compared to standing further away with an 85mm).
On your shot above, if you tried to imitate it with a 35mm, you would be showing a much wider view of the background.
In addition to this, shorter focal ranges allow less compression. Compression is extremely flattering for portraits.
If you shoot at too low of a focal range, then the effect begins to slightly warp facial features.
This is why, for years, the focal range for portraits has always been 85-200mm (Based on 35mm film/sensor size. APS-C would start around 50-55mm). The best compression and "pop" for headshots is 200mm @ f2.8.
The mental rule I follow is that the longer the focal range, the more you're attempting to isolate the subject/object from its surrounding environment.
The shorter the focal range, the more you're attempting to show a subject/object in its environment.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

Notice the model is taking up the same amount of space in frame. Yet, with the wider focal ranges, it allows much more background to be visible.
Also, shorter focal ranges start to elongate features (such as her nose) giving the shot more of a "3d effect". Compression is the opposite of this.

All things considered, I'm only interested in better image quality.
Its obvious that the autofocus is superior and that the TTL metering is much improved.
However, what I want to know is if the image quality is noticeably improved.
Anyone with a K5 upgrade to a K3 and immediately notice a difference? I'm not talking about pixel peeping.
I'm either going to purchase a K3, K5iis, or a Nikon D610 (mainly for fully frame)

I've tried many different pieces of software.
They all do the same thing, just go about it in different ways.
Of course, they each have that one thing that they each excel in doing.
I find that its not as important what software you choose. Just that you know how to use it very well.
Personally, I believe that Lightroom and Photoshop are the industry standard.
Unless there is a substantial cost difference, I would chose those first.

I figured its been long enough that the "new toy factor" has worn off and I can get some honest answers.
Is the K3 a worthy upgrade from the K5?
I understand the autofocus is supposed to be better, but what about image quality?
I'm looking to add a second pentax camera.
I'm debating either a K3 or a K5iis. What does everyone suggest?

Excellent suggestions. I'm glad to see the effects are reproduceable on APSC.
I'll be looking for a 8-16 or 10-20 sigma.
The sigma 18-35 also looks to be a winner and was in my "wish list". :) I had no idea you could achieve this at 18mm.
I really appreciate all the feedback.

I'm interested in the cactus V6. Can a cactus in the hotshoe trigger an off camera Cactus? (While leaving the on camera out of the exposure?)
Otherwise, are there any wireless transmitters/receivers for the K5 that support HSS?

I don't need strong flash power when shooting below F2.8.
I already have a set of ND filters. Yes they work.
But they destroy my entire work flow to have to bring them out and set the exposure correctly.
Off camera HSS would be a much simpler (and faster) route to take.

I've had times when I've needed to shoot at F2.8 (ISO 100) and the pushed me up to over 1/180.
Its not that I WANT HSS, its that there are times I need it to shoot outdoors and under F5.6

Perhaps you may view it as simple.
But considering I keep lenses longer than I keep camera bodies, it makes much more sense to invest into quality lenses as the priority.

I'll be brief.
I need off camera HSS that will work with a Pentax K5. What are my options?
I'm frequently shooting in bright sunlight and need to overpower the sun to fill in some facial shadows.

If Ricoh/Pentax do not release a "Full Frame" DSLR this year, then I will be migrating to another brand.
I would prefer Pentax, but I do need a Full Frame sensor and can no longer ignore that gap.
I'd most likely go with:
Nikon D610
Nikon 24-70 F2.8
Nikon 70-200 F2.8
Nikon 85 F1.4
Love my pentax camera. Love my pentax lenses. Perhaps I'll keep it as a backup.
But once you shoot with a Full Frame camera and pro lenses, its really tough to shoot with anything else.
Pentax is the absolute best......for their weight. There is no other camera system that is so compact and light that I can take such great exposure with.
But, as far as the best system? In my mind, Full Frame beats crop sensor every day.
