Macro lens for K-50 suggestions needed please

So, I ended up buying the Pentax-D FA 100 mm 2.8 macro lens. Just a fluke that someone locally was selling it through Kijiji for $499.00 CDN. I got it for $475.00. Now to practice taking closeups. I hope to someday photograph insects really close as to see they're usually invisible to us details. Any advice would be great. Been photographing flowers & fruits & whatever I can really close, trying to get that ultra-sharp focus down. Again...any advice for that would be awesome. I have a Pentax K-50. Thanks for all the advice guys. Not too bad for a 1st macro shot attempt.

I want to get into macro photography, and don't really want to spent mega-bucks to start. That being said, can anyone suggest an excellent macro lens to help me get my feet wet?

I would prefer (if there is any) a WR lens to keep everything water resistant, but it's not crucial. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks to all!

...Bert

I agree with most of what you said except I believe mechanical pieces tend to last way longer than electronics & software. My old K-1000 & Me-super are still going strong after 34 years...NEVER a breakdown / problem....and CERTAINLY not after only one year of use :/

Aperture motor needs replacing...same thing happened to mine just before the warranty expired (thank goodness). It sucks, but that's what it is. Hope Ricoh / Pentax improves the quality of the replacement aperture motors, if not, mine should fail again in a few months.

Is it still functionning ok, now that it's been almost a year since your repair. I can't help but feel like this problem can re-occur on a yearly basis. I'm just trying to get a feel for it.

Aperture Issue with K-30?

Yup, I agree it's the aperture motor. My K-50 did the same thing shortly before the warranty expired on it. First photos on burst would be dark then after a moment of stopping, the burst shots, the next photos were just fine. I hope that the repair I had done lasts longer than the original motor, if not I may have to spend more money on a Canon DSLR, although that would break my heart.

My guess would be the aperture control block may be shot. I had a similar thing happen to my K-50 recently. it would take the 1st series of photos totally UNDER exposed to the point where it was black, and in auto mode if bursting a series of same shots..the photo would go from black to ok...got it repaired under warranty, and they replaced that aperture control block. Seemed to fix things for now.

How long has it been since the repair? I'd be curious to know. I just received mine back this May 11, 2015. Mine was repaired at Sun Camera Service, in Ontario. Can you provide the link to the post you made about it?

I suppose if you have a choice, I would purchase extension warranty, just to be safe. I didn't have that offer, so I only have till Next January, and then I'm on the hook for the repair. Other than this problem, I VERY MUCH love my k-50.

Just a precautionary note. I have the K-50, and shortly after 1 year of use (and thousands of photos later). I had to send mine in for repair. The exposure was not functioning properly. Thankfully, there s a 2 year warranty on the camera, so I got mine fixed for only the shipping cost. They fixed it well so far, but only got it back yesterday. I hope that's ALL the problems I have with it. I just feel it's important to know things that can go wrong with the camera to make an error-free choice. I hope you don't get the same problem in whatever camera you decide to get, but at least now you know of one problem.

Mirror stuck problem in new Pentax K-50

Ok, I just received my camera from the repair shop that Ricoh / pentax told me to send it to here in Canada, and they replaced the "Diaphragm control block", and so far, the camera seems to be repaired. I just hope that I won't have to send it in a 2nd time in the near future, as this was very dis-heartening sending my camera only after just over one year of use. I'm happy to get it back, and it didn't take them long to repair & send back to me (less than 2 weeks). Anyone else have their Pentax K-50 repaired due to a similar problem? if so, what was replaced / repaired? I would like to know. Are you going to keep yours now that it's repaired? I'm on the fence, but I have NO desire to ditch my Pentax camera.

My K-50 acted up in a similar way today. I got mine in Jan, 2014, so much for warranty! Anyway, my camera would power up and mirror was stuck in the up position. After trying everything (camera reset, dust removal to vibrate it, remove / install lens & card & battery etc, etc, etc...), it finally would take photo, but photo came out black, with just a hint of an object (and this is with flash on & automatic & manual trials). Ten minutes later power on, power off, repeat tinkering, it finally took a normal photo, noting seemed wrong. Took it home, same thing...camera snapped photo & mirror was NOT stuck up....photo dark. I tried putting my AA adapter in with fully charged NimH batteries, and it worked fine. I'm HOPING it was just a weak battery, although at the 1st failure, my Li-Ion battery was 3/4 charged, so...GULP! I think it's gonna have to be repaired, but I'm still hopeful it was only weak battery. :( Gonna try reinstalling firmware for it tomorrow, once batteries have fully charged.

I'm just happy that my Pentax k-50 says "Pentax" and NO sign of Ricoh. I don't like Ricoh, and never did...so ya for me if ever I HAVE to buy a new DSLR (highly unlikely...but you never know). I will switch to Nikon or Canon...which would SUCK for me...LONG LIVE THE PENTAX NAME.

Off camera flash, what to get?

So If I get two RF603 triggers, could I not use my old flashes? as it's not directly hooked up to the camera, and being set off remotely? OR is it still risky? I like what I see in the Yongnuo YN-560 IV flash, but is there one in that price range that has TTL? Thanks for all the info so far...I'm still reading, but for now those are my questions.

If they all jump into the abyss of overpriced products, do we all have to do that? I don't find Nikon or Canon any better than Pentax, and I didn't have to sell my kidney to buy mine....let them jump.

Off camera flash, what to get?

Hi all! I have a Pentax K-50 and am interested in doing some flash photography off camera, and was in need of advice. First off, let me say I don't have a ton of money to spend, so I'm looking for a good bargain.

Question 1. Can I get just use any flash to do this or does it have to be a Pentax flash? Which would you all recommend?
Question 2. Should I get a remote slave unit for the flash, or should I get one with a cable? again, Which would you all recommend.

Now I'm not really thinking I'll be putting the flash behind my subjects for photos (in general), but If I can, so much the better, for this, I'm leaning towards some type of remote slave unit. Will my old flashes do the job? They're mostly the old Vivitar flashes (model 2500 & 3500). I know I read that using the wrong flash could damage the camera, obviously I don't want to do that, so that's why I'm asking. I just thought that if it's a remote slave unit, it's not really in contact with the camera (unless via cable). Any and all help would be great.

Thanks.

What Should Pentax Do?

To me the big problem with Pentax is just the lack of "in your face" like Nikon & Canon. I've always had a pentax slr / dslr, and when I was getting my dslr, I looked at Nikon & Canon, and Bang for the buck, features of each camera I compared, Pentax won, Not the popular "in your face" Nikon & Canon. I don't think Pentax will EVER take that over. People are too hung up on what does Mr. & Mrs. Jones have for a brand. People don't think for themselves, and investigate what a truly good camera with WAY more features than Nikon & Canon is. Even back in the 80's when I got my K-1000 & ME Super, I thought them VERY solid & nicer to look at than the bulky Nikon's, Canon's & Minolta's. People are people, and until they start thinking with their brains and really looking at all the features, maybe then and only then, will the Pentax name shine, AS WELL IT SHOULD! Those are my 2 cents worth. I hope I'm wrong, and someday Pentax blows them all out of the water.

If anyone in the future sees this post, and wonders what case I finally bought. I bought an "Evecase universal Blue" case from Amazon.ca. Here's the link http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00489O0DM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

If you want to see what I managed to fit in it, Look at my review of the bag by "Bert". I inserted a photo of everything I managed to fit in it on our trip to the Philippines. Oh! and I didn't have to fork out a fortune for it either, only cost me $25.99, so I was VERY happy.
