I would be sacrificing reach will the 60-250 replacements. But, I often find 250 too short and when I what Tele I grab my 400mm telemacro. The 60-250, as a short Tele, kind of sits in no man's land for me. ---------- Post added 07-16-16 at 06:15 AM ----------
Correct. F4 for landscapes is fine, but as a candid walk around I would like it to be a bit faster. It also takes up a lot of bag space for a lens I rarely use at the 12mm end. ---------- Post added 07-16-16 at 06:17 AM ----------
It looks like you own the 18-35 and the 12-24, plus the 16-50. How does the 16-50 compare?

Consider the older but excellent prime: Sigma 400km telemacro. Very sharp. In very good light, works with the sigma 1.4x tc as well to give you 560mm. I use this lens extensively for wildlife. 400mm should be the cutoff for you if you ask not 300.

I have a few lenses I am considering selling/trading for alternatives. Any thoughts or advice on alternatives?
Pentax 12-24 f4 ED AL
At 12mm, often a little too wide. Also, at f4, too slow at times. Not a good "walk around" lens for those reasons (plus WR would be nice, but not a must)
I was thinking about a 15mm ltd combined (maybe) with a 20-40, 18-35 or Sigma 17-50. Advice on these or any other alternatives.
Use would be for city/street photography, some nature landscapes, and some astrophotography.
Pentax DA* 60-250 f/4
Great lens and output. I find it is either too short (compared to 400mm telemacro) to carry as a telephoto for wildlife or too big and heavy to use as a "walk around" lens for street shooting.
I have recently started looking at the 70-200 f2.8 lenses. Also the 18-135 looks interesting but lower IQ. considering trading reach for speed, But I think it only makes my size issue even worse. The 50-135 is also a contender.
I will be keeping the lenses below as I really enjoy those lenses and want my new lenses to be on par in the IQ department:
Pentax SMCP-DA 40 f/2.8 ED Limited Edition
Pentax D-FA 100 f/2.8 Macro WR
Sigma 400 f5.6 Telemacro
I also have a great Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG teleconverter to play with.

If you can get your hands on an f-stop kenti, it is a GREAT bag. I have gone through several bags and brands over the years and this is by far tops. And bigger than you think. In the side compartments in was able to store a k3, 400 telemacro, 100 macro, 40 LTD, 60-250 and 12-24 with some clever configuration on the divider.

I have used CP filter before and found cheap filters do more harm than good. Are you saying you always need a CP with this lens?

I shoot a wide variety of subjects, but am covered with other great lenses at most ranges (100 macro, 60-250, 400 telemacro, etc). I do not fear weight or size and what I need is a great walking around lens for mostly urban landscapes and architecture, and occasional nature landscape. I also often focus on discreet urban scenes like a particular set of doors, benches, etc. Lastly, astrophotography is in my to do list.
I often proces images to a high key black and white style and am looking forward to finding the right lens to fill my kit below 40 or 60 mm. ---------- Post added 06-19-16 at 07:05 PM ----------

I currently own a 12-24 and at times am dissatisfied. More often than not, I actually find it too wide for my style of photography and end up swapping to the 40 LTD. Thus I am considering the following
Sigma 18-35 ART
Pentax HD 20-40
Pentax DA* 16-50
Anyone have an opinion or advice?

I greatly enjoy my Sigma 400mm telemacro, but on occasion I do want more reach. I understand that there will be some degradation of IQ, and autofocus may be limited. However, when trying to capture a static subject in reasonable light at a great distance (think a nesting bald eagle), then I think I could cope with the drawbacks.
That being said, can anyone provide any guidance on which TC to try? I would prefer AF if possible, but really I want the best IQ. I am not concerned about use with other lenses and the new Pentax TC is likely too pricey.
Thoughts?

It has been sold. I marked it sold - even changed the title - but it doesn't look like it is taking it. I will try again. Maybe it's a mobile issue.

I agree, great lens. Lately I have just been steering more towards the opposite end of the spectrum (more telephoto wildlife and less landscapes)

Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM FLD AF Ultra Wide Zoom Lens
REDUCED TO $600
$650 includes insured shipping within continental US and PayPal fees (to provide both buyer and seller protection).
This lens is in excellent condition. I simply do not use it as much as I thought I would as I have become less of a wide angle photographer myself. It has been used only a hand full of the time and has spent the rest of its life sitting on my shelf wanting to be put to use. So, I am finally parting with this great lens.
Known to be the widest rectalinear lens available for Pentax and regarded for fantastic IQ. Like new condition with clean glass and no blemishes, caps and hood included.
PM if interested.

I shoot the occasional city scene (would like to do more), but really landscapes in nature has been my preference. I do not want to diminish the background with an UAW like my 8-16 which is always shot above 10, but I do want clarity in my images. The 12-24 seems to take amazing photos, but I do prefer the form factor and WR of the 20-40 (plus it may replace my 40 ltd as I have mentioned in the past) and the focal range may be sufficient. I know they are too very different animals as far as application, but are they equivalent in sharpness and other IQ?

The 20-40 seems to be a vary polarizing lens. Some reviews seem to indicate it is barely better than a kit lens, others - it never leaves their camera. One thing is for certain, it has the 12-24 beat on size, weight, build and WR.

I have narrowed my search for the right walk around / landscape / street lens to two.
Pentax 12-24
Great coverage range but I worry about distortion and sharpness. Also means I can't sell my 40 prime to help buy new lens.
Pentax 20-40
Not the widest, but I hear it can outperform or be on par with the 15/21/40 primes?
I ruled out the following:
Sigma 18-35:
love the f1.8 for DOF creativity, but not the size, weight or focus issues. Arguably the sharpest of all I considered though.
Pentax 16-50
Not convinced it outperforms the 12_20 or 20-40
Prime 15 / 21 combo
Lens changes on the trail mean braking into my pack. The lens change is not bad, but if constant annoying and the pack/unpack process can be costly.

I too may need to learn to use it, but from what I hear the 8-16 outperforms both the 10-20 and 10-24. ---------- Post added 02-19-15 at 07:12 AM ----------
These would cover a great range. Do the hold up on the low end range in an IQ sense compared to the 18-35? Are they better at 40 than the 40 Ltd?
