The whole thing is STUPID confusing. The video did do a nice job describing a ton of things that I have never really considered before. What the author is communicating is that the manufactures are "changing" the focal length but not the aperture. In the DOF (depth of field) equation that does not work, like he says you have to change both sides of the equation. When a manufacture of a Micro 4/3's lens says, this lens is a 35mm f1.8 lens, it is. However, when they say that this is effectively a 70mm f1.8 lens, that is false; when you are trying to make things equal....
When you are comparing the various formats you simply have to make things equal to compare them, especially for consumers. I don't believe the author said 35mm was the be all end all format BUT camera and lens manufactures seem to like to compare lenses to those on FF cameras.

But you don't yield the same frame taking an image on a FF vs APS-C vs MFT. The sensor essentially crops the frame effectively zooming in on the image, if what I have read is correct. What creates the difference in DOF though?
Whenever I think I am understanding what you are trying to say I confuse myself all over again. So I will type this out.
Focal Length - the distance in millimeters from the optical center of a lens to the imaging sensor when the lens is focused at infinity. I believe this is where most of the confusion comes from. You are saying this is ALWAYS constant regardless of sensor size? Which by definition is correct.
Aperture - a space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, especially the variable opening by which light enters a camera. By definition again, your argument holds up. You can physically measure the space in which light passes.
That's the lens part in which everything is absolutely the same but when you add in the sensor it changes the frame and that is were the confusion really starts.
Depth of field - is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image. Further... The combination of focal length, subject distance, and format size defines magnification at the film / sensor plane. (Depth of field - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Field of view, I've being referring to this as the frame - In photography, the field of view is that part of the world that is visible through the camera at a particular position and orientation in space; objects outside the FOV when the picture is taken are not recorded in the photograph. It is most often expressed as the angular size of the view cone, as an angle of view. For normal lens, field of view can be calculated FOV = 2 arctan(SensorSize/2f), where f is Focal Length. Am I at least heading down the correct path now?

So that brings up the question is there a "Standard" that should be used for all photography? Or do we need to look at specific sensor size for each category? It is apparent that Focal Length, Aperture, and ISO yield different results on each sensor. Although, both the video and everyone in this thread agrees that ISO is basically antiquated.
What should the "standard" be? or should there be one? The general public feeds off of these equivalencies and MUST have them before they purchase anything. This whole conversation reminds me of the "Contrast Ratio" debate that plasma and LCD televisions had in the early 2000's.

Kunzite, I am seeing your point a little bit here but I am confused. Am I correct in saying that you are simply using the tools (lens, camera, and your eye) to create an image; no more, no less? Focal length, Aperture, and ISO are just arbitrary numbers? Almost Dionysian, if you will.
If my comprehension is correct my next question would be when someone asks you to recreate an image or asks how its done what do you tell them?
I am not being sarcastic, I am genuinely curious.

It seems you have two separate issues going on. 1. Your exposure isn't quite right. Are you using Spot, Centered, or Matrix? After watching a few talks and practicing I like using the Matrix mode, then I adjust my shutter speed by whats in my frame. If there are light colors in the frame, I make it a bit brighter and darker for darker colors. (Look up some of Jerry Ghionis's talks on exposure, he is pretty awesome). 2. Check your white balance. Try to get out of Auto White Balance as much as you can. That will REALLY help your pictures.

Ohhh!! I thought I read that it could control that flash already. Well that scrubs that whole thing then!
I just really like the v6 trigger. Its the main selling point for me going with the Cactus system.

In realty... and this is something that I have been thinking about because I like the battery on the Godox unit..
2 - V6's - $110 dollars
1 - Godox tt850 - $104
Roughly $214
OR
1 RF60 $139
1 v6 $56
Roughly $199...
To add the extra battery, its another $30-$40...
Soooo Maybe the Godox unit mixed with the Cactus v6's is the way to go..... Hmmmmmmm!

Stopping down... I know, I know... This is the last thing you want to do. Everyone wants that nice creamy bokeh to start on the furthest eye from the camera. That 3D effect is almost a must in this day in age. But why not stop down to 2.8 until you are used to that shallow DOF?
I just recently purchased the 43mm and 77mm LTD's and my girlfriend and I take a trip to New Orleans and are walking around Audubon Park (If you are in NOLA, do yourself a favor and walk around this park, its really quite stunning and photogenic). I have my new portrait LTD's with me and I just know I am going to knock these pictures out of the park... like they are going to be award winning amazing portraits (ha ha). While taking them, I thought they were too! They were gorgeous and the composition was actually not too shabby. Well... Out of the 5 portraits that I thought were keepers, only two of them made the cut simply because of focus issues that were MY fault. Looking at them is frustrating because I KNOW that if I would have been stopped down to 2.8 instead of 1.8 or 1.9 the shot would have been perfect.
Are you completely negating the purchase of the LTD's if you stop down to 2.8? Or do you just make sure you double check your focus when you take a picture like this? I am still rather new to photography and I cannot tell a HUGE difference between 1.9 and 2.8. Thoughts?

Do you really think the trigger by itself will go for $54.95? Comparatively that price is pretty amazing.
I am extremely excited about this combo! I've been waiting for the v6 to come out to order it and the rf60.

That looks a lot better. I still wish I could get that blue to come out more. I have CS3 but I have no idea how to use it... haha. What I would really love to do is completely isolate that blue pattern in the middle bring out the blue and make the pillar a gray that kind of disappears.

This image is missing something... I can't figure it out. I also cannot seem to darken the spray paint in the middle. When cars would drive by the gloss from the paint would reflect. Any opinions?

Zack Arias is, in my opinion, one of the best strobist out there. You can check his stuff out on youtube but his "One Light 2.0" is a really great set of videos.
Disclaimer: I do not own flashes.. yet. I love his work and I like the way he teaches.

I tend to agree with you. At first the Godox system seemed the way to go but I think for what I want to do the Cactus will be perfect. The Cactus also seems to be more "upgrade friendly." Thank you for your input and your great review.

Class A, I read your review and enjoyed it quite a bit, thank you.
I have no flash system as of right now and I am wondering if you were in my shoes would you go with the Cactus RF60 system or the Godox system?
From what I've read the v6 triggers will be much nicer than f-16s triggers, miles ahead in technology AND usability. But the battery pack for the Godox is appealing... Im so confused!

I really enjoy the pro-tog cheap camera series. I find it kind of inspirational as far as using what you have to get interesting results. I think all of the pro's they have had on there did a pretty decent job actually.
They have done three Pentax specials. One with a K5-IIs, one was entitled Save Pentax, and the other was a review of the K-R (or X) can't remember.
Bwahahahaha... I've seen many arguments like this on this board too... hahaha love it!

Smart phones could very well be a jump off point for some "photographers." Not that I am a professional in any sense of the word but I started off taking pictures using my iPhone, went to a micro 4/3rds, and now a Pentax K-5IIs. Not that I represent a huge majority but there are people out there that do move up the food chain seeking better formats.
What happened to the best camera is the one you have on you?

I was trying... haha It wasn't intended at all. My intention was to create a more of a 3d effect bringing the entire subject out. When I diffused the flashlight it made the whole image brighter instead of just the subject. I have lots of work still to do.

First try at a portrait and working with light. Light behind is just the ceiling light in the room behind the door. Light on my face is a flashlight. It was challenging to get my settings correct or at least what I thought was correct. Certainly open thoughts on how to light this better and posing the "model."
I haven't ordered flashes yet, Im thinking I may wait for the Cactus v6 to come out with the RF40 (I think) otherwise I will be ordering the Godox tt850 with the wireless adapters.
To me the, I need more light on the whole subject just not on the face. I tried to diffuse the light with a white trash bag but it ended up lighting the whole scene instead of just the subject. Also, I never realized flashes were so different than a constant light... So much to learn!
