DxO is absolutely terrible when handling noise reduction, but better at contrast, highlights, shadows, etc.

Pentax K-X: We're finally outgrowing the kit lens

If budget is only $300-400 that's barely enough to get the Sigma 50mm 1.4. With that limit you are better off buying some old AF lenses and some cheaper manual K lenses. No new lenses for you!!

Switching to Pentax, but with a couple of questions

I'm actually curious why you decided to switch to Pentax to begin with rather than simply upgrading your Nikon to a more advanced model.

Have you at least gone out and experimented? That's what I did. I learned PASM in a few days doing it that way. It was not a smooth learning experience, but I basically got the general gist of it after that. It took some more time after that to get a more rounded knowledge of how to use it in day to day photography.

Advice on Lens for NY trip

Architecture in NYC isn't much to talk about, unless you like the look of modern office buildings. However, even with that said, using the 8mm should produce some nice views.

Fuji x-a1 vs k3, what's your opinion?

The fuji sensor handles high iso very nearly or equal to that of the Canon 6d and 5d Mark III, at least as far as jpegs go. The issues with fuji that I'm reading is that it's sluggish when taking pictures and focusing. I think I may have to go to a camera store and test one out.

Would You Use the Pentax 70-210 for Portraits?

Head, head and shoulders and full body, all outdoors for the 70-210. I currently only own one canon external flash (550ex), which I bought for $45, but I did just buy one of their older models (420ez) for $3 to use as an additional off camera flash.

The reason I am asking about the 70-210 is because I think I can get this cheaply, like maybe under $40 or $50. This will probably be my outdoor lens. For indoors I'm going to try and get a tamron 17-50 2.8 cheaply, if that's possible. That'll be it for now. I can't afford anything else. I had purchased a pentax because I thought the camera was an extremely good deal considering that Pentax has features on their cameras you'd only find in a $1000 model from either Canon or Nikon. For me to purchase a pentax for around $300 brand new is a very good deal. I have never owned a new camera before. What I find extremely discouraging is Pentax's lens lineup. They either don't make the lens I'm looking for or it's way overpriced for what they offer, in which case, a used one isn't going to be had for much cheaper. Additionally, the used and third party lens market for Pentax is practically non existent compared to Canon, Nikon or Sony. The only thing that Pentax appears to have beat everyone in is the fact that you can use old Pentax manual lenses on their new digital bodies.

Ah, I thought perhaps the 250mm focal length along with the fast aperture might help. Are you saying that I'm unlikely to get good background blur even on a 135mm (756mm equivalent) f2.5? I have to get something at that length.

I wonder what the bokeh is like on the 06. That would be the cheapest 70-200mm f2.8 lens ever if anyone decided to use it for portraits, lol.

I like it's compactness, but there's just one problem with this design, there's no way to angle or tilt the camera. Probably a better idea to purchase a gorilla pod.

Oh damn, I was thinking about purchasing a 135mm to carry around the streets with, but I see now that I'm probably better off with 35 fujian or 50mm whatever. Can I assume 200-300mm is acceptable for handholding, or is this too much as well?

I'm curious about something. I know the Q offers IS, but what is the probability of getting sharp photos handheld when you're at 700-1300mm, etc?

Pentax K3 vs Nikon d7100

The d7100 is not weather resistant so it is unfair to compare their bodies, even though both bodies are magnesium alloy it is clear that weather sealing adds more bulk to a camera. Why don't you compare the bodies of the D300 and the K3 and come back here and give us your assessment of those two cameras.

How's the sharpness at higher focal lengths? Does the lens stay at f4 up until 135mm? Do you get satisfying bokeh?

I'm not going to get very good bokeh at 70mm f4. It might look decent if my background was really deep and I stick my lens in the face of my subject for a headshot, but I would never get proper background blur for head to chest or waist shots at 70mm. Your lens is 1.8 so you can probably do that.

Tokina 80-200mm? Anyone?

I think the rating is exaggerated. I've never read any review describing the quality as that good. If it costs you $500-600 then it's overpriced. Better to just the tamron for that amount. I'd buy the tokina if it was $250 or so.
