That Elusive "3D Pop" Defined

I've checked out your blog and discovered you're a one man rabbit hole. I've spent too much time there already. My mother is Sumatran and has wrtitten a cookbook. I could tell you one or two things about rendang. What you cooked I'm afraid doesn't come close. I literally learnt to cook at my mother's knee. I've just had a quick look at Scritti Politi, after what must be decades. Wood Beez is a much more musical pop song then I gave them credit for forty years ago. Yes! 40! I agree that juxtaposing poetry composition and scientific method is tenuous. One thing I might point out is there are versions of songs and cover versions. A cover attempts to replicate the exact sound and arrangement of the original, hence cover bands. A version of a song is just that. A version and not a cover. Thank you for your blog. My weekend is now gone.

Saw Tedeschi Trucks Band in Sydney last night. No support. Pure unadulterated TTB. And when Derek Trucks started the slide opening of Midnight in Harlem the audience of course went crazy.
Here's a version from 2012:

A few weeks ago saw Víkingur Ólafsson playing the Bach Goldberg Variations at the Sydney Opera house.

In the last four weeks I've seen two of the best two concerts I've ever seen in my life. It's like going from the sublime to the sublime.
If any of you out there get a chance to see either of them beg, steal or borrow.

For what its worth my standard travel kit is the KP with the DA 21. I'm more likely to take it out with me and apart from exposure and composition there are no choices to be made. But that's just me. As I get older I become more minimalist in approach.

Some people find blue skies boring. They can also tend to play havoc with exposure. Learn to love clouds. Buy the The Cloudspotter's Guide by Gavin Pretor-Pinney. Embrace cloudy skies.
NYC may be the wrong place to exclude people in your photos. Even if you're not interested in them as people they're fantastic for providing a sense of scale.
When I first bought The Americans by Robert Frank what struck me was how important it was to see the all the photos in the context of the book. Of course I recognised a few of the individual photos but they didn't really make sense in isolation. Seeing all the photos together creates the bigger picture. The chronology is less important than the collection itself.

Having said all this I've also looked at your photos and can see your strict rules have led to some striking images. They're great! You have a good eye for architectural form.

Aren't they worth more now than when they were first released? If you can get one for a good price then you'd be crazy not to buy.

It's really aged well hasn't it.
I think Newson's Lockheed lounge could be had for $AUD20,000 in 1988. It's now worth $AUD 5,000,000, that is if one comes on the market. There's only 15 examples around the world.
The K0-1 isn't in the same league as regards rarity but still worth hanging onto. The bumblebee is the pick of them. Great still life.

Pentax FA 43. Will be packing it again this Xmas for family shots. My parents are in their nineties and there are new great grandchildren this year. The posterity shots are the most important.

The most glaring gap is the DA 21mm. The KP and the 21mm are made for each other. As they come in both black and silver you can justify getting two of them.

I was teaching a class the day I heard Lou Reed had died. I asked the kids if any of them had heard of him. Nup! I said without Lou Reed you wouldn't have had The Strokes. They hadn't heard of them either.

I think I paid around 650 EUR (in Australian dollars) new. So this price isn't cheap. It's hard to believe but when it was first released it wasn't considered anything special so there were deals to be had. But it's a great camera and maybe this is what they're worth now. BTW if in the first week of October if you see someone doing street photography in Berlin around the tourist traps with a KP + 21mm it could be me.

Thoughts & opinons on camera trends

My personal trend is giving cameras away and only keeping what I regularly use. I don't read or watch any new model camera or lens reviews anymore. I have an eight yo GR a KP and a K1 plus a Lumix GX85 + the usual primes and zooms. What else could I possibly need? Yes eventually GAS burns itself out like a supernova. Speaking of which James Webb is the only new camera I've been excited about recently. And it was already a ten year old model.

I suspect you have a bad copy. My one is for beach holidays and expectations are low but all I really want is family snaps and weather sealing. Good results are still possible.

Turning K-3/3 into street camera :)

My KP + 21 is my street camera when I'm not carrying my GR. It has five axis stabilisation, better battery life and with the pancake lens is still discrete despite being a DSLR. Good high ISO performance means you don't need a fast lens. Of course the K3 iii will have much better specs even if slightly larger.

GR III vs DSLR for travel

Since I bought my GR 8 years ago it's been on every trip with me. There's usually another camera whether it's been a DSLR or M43 or film. But the one constant is always the GR. It's not just the image quality and the convenience. It's a fun camera which encourages you to take photos. It's going to Europe again in September. This time it'll be accompanied by the KP.

Recently I was given a near mint D300 and was able to collect a few F lenses at giveaway prices. Have now bought a refurbished D7500, also at a giveaway price. It's still a fine camera. This sort of situation is good for vultures and jackals.

Even without the starbursts the photo would still be astonishing. Look at all the thousands of galaxies in the background in a relative grain of sand portion of the universe. Surely we're not alone. Statistically, on one planet, in one of those galaxies, dogs will be in charge. Sadly they won't be capable of interstellar travel unless they're motivated by food or play.

I had a decentred copy as a result of it being knocked. It was much cheaper to get another one from fleabay rather than get it fixed. My regular camera repair guys* are up front about that sort of thing. I'm pretty sure I paid much less than half the Australian new price. Bargains appear if you're patient.
