Traveling

For what its worth my standard travel kit is the KP with the DA 21. I'm more likely to take it out with me and apart from exposure and composition there are no choices to be made. But that's just me. As I get older I become more minimalist in approach.

How to Become More Resilient when My Picture-Taking Plans Are Derailed

Some people find blue skies boring. They can also tend to play havoc with exposure. Learn to love clouds. Buy the The Cloudspotter's Guide by Gavin Pretor-Pinney. Embrace cloudy skies.
NYC may be the wrong place to exclude people in your photos. Even if you're not interested in them as people they're fantastic for providing a sense of scale.
When I first bought The Americans by Robert Frank what struck me was how important it was to see the all the photos in the context of the book. Of course I recognised a few of the individual photos but they didn't really make sense in isolation. Seeing all the photos together creates the bigger picture. The chronology is less important than the collection itself.

Having said all this I've also looked at your photos and can see your strict rules have led to some striking images. They're great! You have a good eye for architectural form.

I'm like Sandy and have also reached peak camera. In the last two years I've been giving gear away to family and friends. There comes a point in your life when you start decluttering. I don't have a foot in the grave but I'm far along enough to realise you can't take it with you.

The DA 21mm + KP is my travel camera of choice if I don't take my GR. It's the perfect combination.

Aren't they worth more now than when they were first released? If you can get one for a good price then you'd be crazy not to buy.

For my level of editing skills it's all I need. Better results than Corel PaintShop Pro which I used for a long time. I love the photo indexing which enables me to quickly scan through every photo on my hard drive.

My Canon s110 from 2012 still gets a lot of love. They're also desirable. 2nd hand asking price is not much less than the new price. You'll also need extra batteries.

Pentax FA 43. Will be packing it again this Xmas for family shots. My parents are in their nineties and there are new great grandchildren this year. The posterity shots are the most important.

Having children and realising I had to record their lives. They're in their teens now and refuse to be photographed without scowling and complaining. GAS cured!

The most glaring gap is the DA 21mm. The KP and the 21mm are made for each other. As they come in both black and silver you can justify getting two of them.

I think I paid around 650 EUR (in Australian dollars) new. So this price isn't cheap. It's hard to believe but when it was first released it wasn't considered anything special so there were deals to be had. But it's a great camera and maybe this is what they're worth now. BTW if in the first week of October if you see someone doing street photography in Berlin around the tourist traps with a KP + 21mm it could be me.

Pentax LX vs P30t quality

Welcome to the forum. I've been through two P30s. Eventually they just die. Everything is plasticky and not made to last. It wouldn't surprise me if a better built more rigid body made to finer tolerances would result in sharper photos.

This thread really needs an index. Has anyone linked to Lou Reed Rock n Roll Animal yet?

I was teaching a class the day I heard Lou Reed had died. I asked the kids if any of them had heard of him. Nup! I said without Lou Reed you wouldn't have had The Strokes. They hadn't heard of them either.

Thoughts & opinons on camera trends

My personal trend is giving cameras away and only keeping what I regularly use. I don't read or watch any new model camera or lens reviews anymore. I have an eight yo GR a KP and a K1 plus a Lumix GX85 + the usual primes and zooms. What else could I possibly need? Yes eventually GAS burns itself out like a supernova. Speaking of which James Webb is the only new camera I've been excited about recently. And it was already a ten year old model.

Turning K-3/3 into street camera :)

My KP + 21 is my street camera when I'm not carrying my GR. It has five axis stabilisation, better battery life and with the pancake lens is still discrete despite being a DSLR. Good high ISO performance means you don't need a fast lens. Of course the K3 iii will have much better specs even if slightly larger.
