Sticky: Pentax Lens Disassembly Database

Hi all,
I have recently been on the hunt for dis-assembly guides for the purpose of dust removal etc. They seem to be turning up in various places across the forum, so I plan on creating a list of all the Pentax lens disassembly posts here. I will categorise each lens like they are in the 'lens database' and you should be able to see which lenses have a guide and which do not. If I come across multiple guides then I will list them all under that lens so there is coverage or alternative explanations. And hopefully with your help we will be able to put together a substantial resource for the DIYer's here, although I do realize some lenses will never have an owner brave enough to strip down themselves due to the shear value. I know this will take quite some time but I think it will be worth it. I have restricted time at this point but I want to get the ball rolling. So here is what we have:

NB: Currently this tread is only for Pentax K-Mount & M42 Screw-mount lenses. Maybe once this has developed a bit I might look at introducing other pentax Mounts and or third party lenses and permitting time (and success of this resource) a cleaning guide with tips on tools and techniques. I am trying not to bite off more than I can chew for the moment so we will just stick with lenses listed below.

How is the 77 "difficult"?

I don't own an FA 77mm. I subscribed to this thread because the 77mm Limited is a constant temptation to me. It's an awesome lens in the results it produces, but mediocre in hard measurements. I haven't bought one because I don't do much portrait shooting, and I have several other solutions. Maybe one day though.

I had to laugh when I read your preferences because apparently you and I are exact opposites. I don't want any of your favourite focal lengths, and if forced to use one lens for eternity, 35mm would be an easy choice. I need an extra wide, normal, portrait and telephoto. My ideal focal lengths would be 14mm, 30mm, 70mm & 135mm (macro). Actual choices were tempered by the practicalities of life.

My ideal portrait length is 70mm (105mm equivalent), but 77mm would do just fine. It is my firm opinion that the FA 77mm is superior to the DA 70mm for portraits. My current portrait lenses are the D FA 100mm macro (too long and too literal), FA 50mm f1.4 (really nice but uncomfortably close for classic portraits), and a new Sigma Art 60mm f2.8 for my a6000 kit. I haven't tried the Sigma for a true portrait session, but I can say for sure that it's not competition for the FA 77mm. Despite significantly higher resolution and lower CA than the Pentax, the Sigma's character is simply not in the same ballpark.

New auto extension tubes for K and Q mounts

Quick word of warning. I've just ordered two of those tubes from SRB... or wanted to. It seems there's some trouble about quality or functionality, as I just got this info as reply:

Thank you for your recent order.
However we have discovered a fault with our recent batch of Pentax extension tubes. We have returned these to the supplier for examination.
We will refund these items on your order. of course and please accept our sincere apologies.

Who knows if this is a general product problem or just, as said, a faulty batch. I hope it can get sorted soon as I'd really love to get me those tubes.

I also tried the tube with the DA-F 100mm macro, but I did not have any issues using it. Then I tried the FA 1.4/85mm, which didn't allow manual focusing just as Rob reported for the FA 77mm. But that isn't very surprising, is it, as it doesn't have the clutch? To test a bit further I used the tubes with an old F 28-80mm which worked correctly and also allowed manual focus.

John, I ordered the tube from SRB-Photographic.co.uk as suggested at the beginning of the thread.

FYI, I also ordered the set for the Q. They also work on the Q7 with AF functioning as expected. In practical terms only the thinnest one is interesting, as the focusing distance becomes very very short, even when using the 06 telephoto zoom.

Picked up my Kooka PK-mount AF extension tube at the post office today. No issues on mounting it on the K-3, no issues mounting the 60-250mm to the extension tube, and AF worked exactly as it was supposed to. Everything in order and no complaints from me.

It even came in its own nice little bag.

I like to show the others(canikon users) how smart I am

Last year I showed one guy who needed an upscale 3 wheeled baby stroller to carry his kit my K300/4 with 1.7x converter. He was surprised how good and small a 500/6.7 combo could be

This year. I have outdone all the canikon types. I showed up birding with a Q and a vivitar series 1 70-210/3.5. It may be tough to nail focus with, but at 1 kilo for a 1100mm full frame equivent I really showed them. Between their lenses, cameras and tripods they were paki g 20 kilos each and completely stationary. Where as I could walk about and shoot hand held

what do you mean, 1200 effective.. he wasn't using FULL FRAME?? [shame, shame]

if that's the case, get yourself a Q + adapter, stack it to the 300+1.4, resulting effective length: 300*1.4*5 = 2100! OK, well, not at the 5.6, perhaps, but 2100!

Just recieved the 25mm extension tube from srb. I'll take it out in anger tomorrow with a few lenses and report back (most of my lenses are sat in my office at work sadly).

Initial impressions are a bit mixed. Mounting the tube is not a lot of fun (the manufacturing tolerances on the mounts could certainly be improved). Once it's mounted, it does do what it says on the tin.

I'm a bit limited with my lens selection at the moment, but I can safely say it doesn't work with the da 15mm - the focus point is pretty much on the surface of the front lens element! The da 21 is fine with it though (you get about 1-1.5 cm clearance), and the images all look good.

As I say though, I'll do some sensible tests with the da 40, da 50, and fa 77 tomorrow, and report back with some images...

You didn't miss much. But I did catch one bright meteor:

Bright Camelopardalid by kevin-palmer, on Flickr

Here's some more shots with the lens here Flickr
I've only had the lens 2 weeks but it's already enabled to get some shots that I would have missed otherwise. If I only had my 14mm lens I would have missed that meteor and not been able to capture the entire storm in the link above.

Handing your camera to a non-photographer

This reminds me of a less-than-honest technique for building your camera collection. Bring an impressively large but actually worthless broken camera to a tourist trap. Pretend to take some photos. A couple on vacation will invariably ask you take their photo and hand you their camera. Drop your junk camera and run away with their camera ;)

I hand them my cell phone, it would take too long to explain how a real camera works. And to be honest, they will get a better picture with the cell phone.

I am not discounting Tamron, Sigma or other third party lenses, I just feel more comfortable with Pentax brand lens which can play well with the camera. If it doesn't, the whole camera/lens goes to Pentax support shop to fix or calibrate (if micro-adjustment is not enough).

Really pleased your reading this. I've looked through A LOT of the Nikon hacker pages. The 'Understanding Firmware' page for instance is permanently open in my browser.
Being based on Milbeaut Nikon and Pentax are pretty much cousins. More often than not hardware addresses you've found line up with our own - even our lenses sometimes fit each other ;)

I love that you've managed to get an emulator going, I've emulated a few routines but nothing near the level you've obtained. Getting this going for an ARM based Nikon will almost certainly help me.

I hope we can collaborate, i'll be unleashing a wiki when I can write up my work. I'll keep you guys in mind.

Pretty Good Video on Equivalence

I found the contents of the video quite logical, but I fail to see the need to start arguing about it. I just got an explanation to something I had been wondering about and been too lazy to figure out myself. Then again, everybody has the right to believe in whatever he/she feels at home with. When collecting water in the rain the small and stylish bucket may indeed be more practical than the large, ugly and heavy one. It may take more time but it's much lighter to carry.

Well, you might want to watch the video, because I do explain the physics. If you disagree with my math, just let me know where my math is wrong and I'll happily fix it.

Re: my usage of bokeh, it seems like everyone knew what I meant. I'm aware of the technical definition of bokeh, but I'm also aware of how people commonly use it as jargon to mean the amount of background blur. Saying, "Small sensors have less bokeh" (as a myth) was more concise than saying, "Small sensors are less able to create a shallow depth of field."

Anyway, I get your point, but I still think my use of the term communicated the message more clearly to most viewers than if I'd avoided using the term because my usage didn't strictly match the official definition.

I see that all items bought separately from Amazon combined into 1 order totals to less than B & H price. (excluding tax). I am pretty sure B & H can do better than this. Agree to 4% rewards cutting it down a little (if and when that arrives. I never not got that 4% on the 3 items I ordered) but not a compelling difference.
