Oh dear, Clackers, do you think so? I'm afraid I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to understanding these things so I will take your reprimand in the spirit it was given and remove myself to the back of the class until I can get my ears syringed.

As many have alluded to here I think the problem was that Faststone RAW conversion was was set by default to import and work on low res files to increase process speed. I have altered the settings which means longer launch and process times and the banding seems to have disappeared. I would be disingenuous if I pretended I fully understood what I was proffering as an explanation but hopefully I can now settle down and enjoy my new acquisition. Thank you all for your help. An example of what I now get, A view of Dartmoor, at the back of my garden.

I did a search through Google and found a lot of people complaining about the same problem as far back as 2005 with Pentax dslr cameras both in this forum and Dp review. A number of the respondents took a raw photo supplied by the originator of the complaint and opened it in Lightroom and could see no banding. However, When opened in a free converter such as Faststone, (the one I used) the banding was apparent. It was deduced that Faststone default settings dealt only with a reduced quality digital capture that showed banding and the way to deal with this was to set the default capture setting in Faststone to ' View in actual size - slower,' and batch convert in actual size - slower'. I did this and the banding did not appear in photos where I had previously seen it. So, if we get any more blue sky this year I will test out my theory and report back.
I would agree it is not the lens, nor do I think it's the camera, I am new to Pentax and I think it's my inability to grasp the rules behind RAW capture and conversion. It appears, in order to speed things up Faststone abstracts a low quality photo to work on.
As an aside, others mentioned that when converting into jpeg in Faststone file sizes were remarkably small, around 2-3mb. I found that by going into the Jpeg setting tag and disabling colour sub-sampling the same jpegs when converted had file sizes around 24MB. Thank you all for your help

The Raw files did shown this right out of the camera. The Raw files were about 23Mb in size. I imported them from them from the sd card with Faststone which I like using. It must be something I am doing (have done), So am going to reset the camera and reinstall Faststone to see if that cures the problem. Thanks to all for your help.

Thank you, I'm using Faststone RAW converter, It is not something that happens all the time which made me think it was something I am doing to the camera. I will remove Faststone and revert to Pentax supplied software to see what happens. Attached is a Faststone conversion without the problem.

Thanks folks,
The lines show up in the Raw file (19+MB) straight from the camera and are still there when I convert to Jpeg and print out like that. No Filter of any sort used.I will swap the colour space to see if that helps.

I had this problem with my skies the other day and thought it was my new 18-135 lens on my new K5 mk2 producing those lines. I shoot raw and jpegs are set to four star 16mp, no filters. Then someone told me it was not the lens but a resolution problem. I'm not sure I fully understood the explanation so can anyone help me out and advise what settings are causing this. It does not happen all the time, and I shoot in P mode.

I have just purchased a K5 Mk 11 having come from the excellent Canon GiX. I am in to long distance trekking and raise money for charity by undertaking long walks through Europe. You can get an idea what I'm on about if you visit my blog at WALKING THE CAMINO FROM PORTO TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA I have always carried my camera in a bum-bag when trekking for ease of use and I find I can also do this with the K5 11..
I am currently looking for a zoom to replace my kit lens and have been particularly impressed by the thread relating to the Pentax 18-135 and the photos contained within that thread. I am aware of the negative comments surrounding this lens but some of the photos posted are superb belying this negativity. The other option is the new Sigma 18-200 and I will await the reviews on this lens before making my decision.
For the last fifteen years, since retiring from my main employment, I have had a paying hobby as a freelance writer/photographed of travel articles and vehicle reviews/launches for a UK motorcaravan magazine, I am also a contributor to photo libraries.
I act as a volunteer ambassador for my local hospice and part of my duties involve taking photos at their events which they sell to raise funds. This was one of the reasons for upgrading to the K5 11 in that I find the controls intuitive and easy to use giving greater flexibility when at these events.
I live on Dartmoor in the UK and when not losing golf balls at my local club can be found meandering across the Tors with my faithful pooch Benny.
