K-3 Mirror Flap - Was It Ever Cured?

see article below

This article was writen by Biz-engineer member at Pentax Forum
Firmware update is somehow a workaround to the mirror flop. The real issue can't be fixed by firmware for the simple reason that the shutter mechanism is having deterministic timing constraints, hence operated by synchronous logic with more than one clock domain (can still be triggered by firmware ;-), then clocked by hardware). These problems are known but still happen at random if overlooked by designers and not detected during the tests of the prototypes. I personally had the experience of one chip having this behavior with probability of 1/2000 (= you have to run the chip a number of time and if you are luck, the bug happens) on 3% of the chips and at temperature below -25 degC (very cold indeed). It can happen at hot as well.

Back to Pentax: in order to save money avoiding a recall of all cameras that needed a hardware fix on the shutter driver, Pentax did a software workaround a limit damages and most likely added a test to screen out modules having this issue in order to eliminate the mirror flop issue on new cameras manufactured onward.
So, if you buy a K-3 new , mirror flop should not be there.

The 1.11 FW Does not fix the problem what it does is shut the camera down and resets it as far as I have read on internet.
but if the problem persists you have to get onto Pentax and send it in so they can do an internal FW update which alters the clock cycle within the camera and can only be done with Pentax engineer

Well I will wait for the K4,
with Pixel shift,
better AF,
tilt screen,
flash,
and maybe an upgrade sensor,

seriously though I am confused now I am all set to buy a new k3, as I don't believe the k3ii has much to offer for me, not interested in GPS, i don't know what the big deal with this is all about,
I can add were my photos were taken in post.

all it will do is run the battery down a lot quicker, same with Wi-Fi .

I just take out my mem card put it in the reader and I got my photos all loaded into Lightroom, none of this faffin about with wi-fi

the whole thing is, with the K3ii is that its all gimmicky,

I love my Pentax k3, but just nothing there on k3ii for me and I suspect many others

The above is just my own opinion

oh there will be some whom disagree that's fine,

one more point this k3ii is cheaper than some of the k3 that are advertised is it second rate to the k3!

it will go UP in price says monochrome
I don't think so
as I said k3 is a better buy in my books, saving £450/£500 ( and I'm talking about the Prestige edition Gunmetal with grip )
, and I don't think there will be much difference in IQ well maybe the pixel-peepers will see a difference

Yes I hear you BUT

I can get the prestige k3 with grip for £850 the new k3ii will cost £1300 my be more,
but there will be a £450/500 difference and the k3ii upgrade is just not worth it for some folks that's what I think,

granted some will like the upgrade because it suits them but not others.

with a saving of £450 at least, the K3 starts to look like a better buy, ( in my way of thinking )

also the k3 will come down in price when they launch the new one

What a let down

Specs don't seem particularly better than K3,
I for one am Not impressed,
what happened to the tilt LCD, better AF I don't think this is much of an improvement
we could get some of the functions on a FW upgrade for the k3

I will wait a few weeks to see the price,
but it does look like I will be ordering the Prestige Gunmetal K3.
I hope the k3 comes down a bit more in price

its so disappointing if This is what Pentax call a newer K3ii

Yes Kooks
I agree with you,

but Pentax don't say "we know the problem.. and we will fixed it fast.." they tend to ignore the problems, and then some months later come out and say we acknowledge this problem
if they came out RIGHT AWAY and acknowledged the problem then it would help there sales as people would be more confident in there purchase of all Pentax cameras.
Fuji is the only company I know that tend to do this, so Pentax should take a lesson from there after sales service.

I think after sales service is very important and companies should come clean an acknowledge this

Great minds think alike Arjay Bee

The only way I would not buy the new K3ii is if it was only minor Pentax updates and they wanted extra monies for a few tweaks

Then I would go ahead and buy the Prestige Gunmetal Pentax k3 at such a great price of £880, here in the UK,
which I think will come down an other £100 when the K3ii comes out,
and as you say all appears to be working well so to me it seams like a bargain for a great camera.

Well I for one will be happy when the new K3ii comes out as I was just about to purchase a prestige edition gunmetal K3 my way of thinking is that the gunmetal version would have had
the internal FW upgraded therefore the mirro flap would be fixed.

Then I herd the wonderful news the K3ii will be out by the end of April,
I will order within a month of it being out thats for sure

Well I was just about to invest in an other K3 but I read last week that the new K3ii was in the pipe line,

so Now I will wait for the new K3ii, it will be an other great camera I hope,
with no mirror-flap. as I have had my fair share of problems.

From what I read on DPR the K3ii will be announced end of this month, and go on sale 2wks later,
if the statement is true, but it seems to be convincing to me.

out-of-warranty cameras should be fixed free as its not fit for purpose when this happens,
after all Pentax knows about the fault,

and it IS a manufacturing or design fault, nothing to do with customers warranty but a lot to do with Pentax testing,
the point that relay gets up my nose is that PENTAX KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM.

it saves Pentax a fortune not having to call all the cameras back in that batch and fix them properly which is what should have happened

Having said all that,

I'm just about to order the prestige gunmetal edition k3

because I love the camera.

When using the grip on the k3 there is a setting for batteries i.e.

use battery in camera first or use battery in grip i think,
or use both what do others set this at on the k3
Thanks Tom G

Hi all again.

After getting in touch with eBay whom now have agreed that I send the k3 back to the seller and they will give me a full refund,
eBay have given me until the 16th April.

so as the camera was sent to the shop in Cardiff they in turn sent the camera to Photopia for repairs, after three weeks I phoned them up as I need the camera back to send to the seller,
they now inform me that it would take an other 3wks till they get parts,
I have now arranged on Wed/1st April to have the camera returned unfixed as I have a deadline from eBay.
So due to the holiday this weekend I hope to get the camera by Tues 7th /Wed/8th and then it will be sent back to the seller.
( eBay sent me a collect+ label so it will be tracked )

all I have to do then is post eBay the tracking number and I should have my refund by next week all going well.
This whole dilemma has been an experience and I will never buy a used camera from eBay just not worth all the hassle

Thanks to all for the advice
