With that new 17-70 you've been needing you can combine the 80-300 and cover all the bases. Have a safe and fun trip.

Dave,
A couple of things while in Houston are the waterwall by the Transco Tower and the observation area in the First City Tower downtown. The building names are probably different now but most people know them by those names. The fountains by the Warwick Hotel are pretty and the nearby medical center and Hermann Park could be good. Rice University, also nearby, has a beautiful campus. The Galleria, near Transco, could be good for general people observing if that's of interest although that might require release forms and other hassles. Galveston is an hour or so away, depending on where in Houston, and has the Strand and other areas that are sort of neat as well as the railroad museum and the Elissa ship. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions too.

Yes, I know this is a highly discussed subject and I've read some threads on it. I'm not asking to start over from scratch, rather to see if I have any inkling on the decision or not. Hopefully nobody will get upset with another inquiry.
My picture taking will be pleasure not professional, i.e. not for pay, but just for myself or family. Probably 99%+ will only be viewed in emails or in forum threads and message groups. If one were to be printed it would likely be 5x7 or smaller. Given that type shooting I'm wondering which way to record the shots. My thought is jpeg is sufficient but both would give me the raw file if/when I ever wanted it and since memory cards are fairly inexpensive shoot both.
I should add I have zero familiarity with any image software of any sort and initially would be looking for something as simple as see it, shoot it, view it. Thanks for any and all feedback based on those criteria.

That's a very unusual asking price on a very nice lens.

I'd really like to have one but it's just too expensive. I've found a nice K10D with 18-55 for a little over half that so I just can't upgrade $500 plus and no lens to boot. Sigh.

Well, the link in the first post takes me to page 2 of a forum with no photos or anything else. Moving to page 1 shows no photos either. Does anyone have the photo saved and could post it in here?

Did anyone get an 8.x prior to this year? I see a few that mention going in with 1.1 and coming back with 8.1 as well as 1.2/8.2 so it makes me wonder if it's a change or just designates the same .x version but 8 signifying it was in the shop in 2008.

You're probably right about dpreview but their format sucks compared to ours. I really like this system and don't mind yahoo groups too much.

Your other option would be to just take a full day of shooting with the 18-250 and afterward go in and see what zoom setting was used most often and then do some lens thinking/shopping.

This is a great forum and I'm very glad to have found it. That said, I find I have a fairly large Pentax habit to feed and wondered if there are any yahoo groups for Pentax that are any good. I get a few dozen various ham radio groups that are good and have looked for Pentax groups but haven't found any likely suspects yet. Anyway, I hope it's ok to ask about other Pentax resources to supplement this one.

Well, I thought it was lens buyer's annonymous but I guess it's addiction and there's apparently no 12 step plan or cure for it.

I was going to say you seem "body poor" taking 3 of them. Then I read 1 stays behind with your daughter. Then I thought, why couldn't you use the K20 and whichever one stays behind on the trip and when you leave to come home only the K20 returns. So I'm back to "body poor" again, thinking 2 bodies should be sufficient and choose one of the orphan lenses to go in it's place, probably the 70-300 just in case there's an issue with the 135-400. Maybe you'll never use it but better to have it and not need it than the other way around. Enjoy your incredible sounding trip.

Hello from a neighbor around the corner (Houston). I'm also camera-less at the moment and also planning on the K10D. As you already stated, this seems to be an excellent forum. Good luck to you.

The only prejudice is the perhaps no longer as valid prejudice that made in Japan means as good as it gets, bar none. That isn't to say a made in elsewhere label means poor quality, just that based on historical results it means no better than equal quality and possibly lower quality. I'm hoping that any/all new Pentax gear I obtain will be equal to my Spotmatic F/MX days.

I'm curious where Pentax equipment is made, both bodies and lenses. I saw made in Vietnam stamped into the back of a lens. Silly me. I was hoping they'd still be made in Japan and of theoretically higher quality.

It's supposed to be forbidden to charge an upcharge for using paypal. I think that only applies on the 3rd full moon of the month though as I see it all the time. I hate that and don't buy from upchargers. I'd much rather have the price quoted all inclusive and if the seller is really stand up and gives me back the cc fee portion that wasn't charged that's great. If not, I guess the seller makes a little extra.

I just returned from the bookstore. I don't recall titles but there were several that dealt with exposure, lighting etc. so I'd suggest a trip to the local library, bookstore or online bookstore and then a few days of serious reading. Good luck.

That makes me think of my first job. I was 16 and for the Christmas holiday worked in a store called Joske's that now is Beall's. I was in the camera/electronics department. It was Dec. 1973 and they mainly sold Kodak Instamatic 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60. I had a nice Spotmatic F system at the time and would have loved to be selling real cameras but that was the job I found.
Anyway, folks would come in and ask for the 10 and I'd show them and then ask to show them the advantages of the next model. I'd go through whatever they were.. I can't really remember any except I believe once you got to the 60 the lens was real glass instead of plastic. I usually always wound up selling a 30 or 40 and did have one customer that came in to buy a 10 and left with a 60. By the next summer I got a job at a local store called The Camera Center and got to work with all the real cameras. I sold a lot of Pentax because that's what I owned and liked. Those were good times. Too bad they're wasted on youth. :D

OK, first find someone to give you a dollar. That way you can take my advice and the dollar to McD's and it's worth a cup of coffee. Anyway, I'd probably put the 12-24 lens on one of the K10D bodies and put it on the top shelf of the closet and put a note on the calendar for 30 days. If I hadn't gone before then to get it I'd consider selling that to put toward the K20D body. Your other glass covers that range, perhaps not quite as conveniently but you at least won't have any length missing like you would if you sold the 10-17 and lost 10 and 11. Down the line if your daughter does get into it you can give her the remaining 10 body and then decide if you need/want a second body of some sort for yourself. Good luck deciding. It's tough for sure. Oh, I didn't vote either since my idea was different than the options.

Cool lenses! When did paypal go up to that high a rate? Last I heard it was 3% on credit card linked and no charge on bank account linked. Sounds like they want to price themselves out of the market. Congrats on the new lens.

The local Wolf store is in a jumbo size strip center across the street from the mall. The Ritz that used to be in the mall is closed and gone. This Wolf store is staffed by kids who are actually into photography and know something about the subject. Granted, the one I've talked to more is a Nikon user but does know at least the basics of Pentax and is able to compare/contrast different models of the Nikon, Canon and Pentax lines they primarily (it seems) sell. Most of the independent local shops, sadly, have closed.
