Pentax K-1 reputation for "bulky and heavy" - is it deserved vs. competing cameras?

I turned off the led lights on my cameras. Pretty much access them by feel since I do not want to affect others shooting or my night vision.

Camera strap attachment points

I have a Black Rapid strap clone I got on Amazon.

So much better than some neck strap.

Much easier to carry since the strap goes over one of my shoulders and the camera is balanced on the other side.

Something like this: amazon.com : Ocim Camera Strap, Camera Sling Strap with Safety Tether, Adjustable and Comfortable Neck/Shoulder Belt for DSLR/SLR Camera (Nikon, Canon, Sony) Universal Belt Women/Men : Electronics?tag=pentaxforums-20&

Pixel Shifted Images

So I have not done any pixel shifted images since I first got the camera.

Do you still need to edit outside of Lightroom? Because LR just pulls in the 1st image of the 4?

Should I get the D-BG6 Battery Grip when I buy a K-1 Mark II?

I could see the ergonomics argument, but only if you shoot portrait a lot and want to hold it that way. If you shooing landscape, I think the K-1 by itself has awesome ergonomics.

Hopes For the next full frame camera

I bet if it was released any time soon it will be a small update like the Mk II was. Same processor, AF, etc. But with some small changes.

Which would not appeal to me.

But a new sensor, processor, AF engine, etc.. that would appeal. But bet it will take a few years. With the K-3 MK3 now out of development, the team can work on the next camera. But it might not be a K-1 successor, but a K-70.

I feel figuring out printing is harder than using photoshop. So many things to know and keep track of.

I think it is worth it to ensure your prints match the image in your mind, but it is so complicated.

But I guess if I wanted easy, I would just use my smartphone from 2000.

It just feels right to me. The right size to hold.

Yes, it might weigh a ton, but when it feels right, it feels right.

Should I get the 28-105 kit lens for the K-1 Mark II?

The 28-105 is a great travel lens. It took me a few days to get that into my head. I was in Glacier and would have the 15-30 on my camera and need a longer lens. Or I would have the 150-500 on and want a wide angle.

The 28-105 was perfect when just driving around the park.

Of course it took a few days to beat that into my head. I hope I do not forget it now.

I figure I am years from an upgrade unless the Mk 3 costs $10.

Sure there are some items I would like changed to the Mk1 & Mk2, but honestly, not enough for me to spend over $2k to upgrade when the camera is awesome as it is.

In-Camera processing vs. Lightroom
Posted By SirTomster

RAWs usually are bland since they are not applying any filters. But once you get it into a program such as lightroom, the choices are endless.

Now, some people are those that want everything in camera with minimal post processing. Which is fine. Then there are those that apply their artistic touches to the image.

Both are fine, it all depends on you. Find what you like. If you are good with the image you see on the back of the LCD, then save as JPG and call it good. If you want to take the image and maybe enhance it have some more oomph then learning to process in Post is a must.

But it is YOUR style. Also, your style can change over time. Mine has.

Used is great. I started with a K-5 used to get me started.

If you like astro, you might want to look at the K-1 and not the K-1 Mk II. Due to the accellerator.

To be honest, I am not sure if the noise reduction the Mk II is good or bad.

I have a Mk1 and Mk2 and most of my primary night sky is on the Mk1 so I handle noise reduction.

The Mk2 is used as my night time timelapse camera.

But then again, once the sun is up, the Mk2 is my primary body.

So I guess you should just buy a few bodies :). All depends on what your primary focus is.

If you have a lens like the Rokinon where you turn it and eventually stops. Then you can figure out where true infinity is and mark that spot. Then at night ensure the lens is set to that stop. I have used a white-out pen to mark that spot.

For newer lenses that you can spin forever. Live view all the way. Turn it on. Zoom in to 4X. Find a star, center then zoom to 16X and focus.

I use a carson 10X loupe to help me ensure the star is the smallest it can be. As you move the focus one way or the other the star will blow out so you just get it to its smallest point.

I use this for my Rokinon 14mm and my Pentax 15-30. Also the Irix 15 I just picked up and am testing out.

Remember to focus often. You can move the camera and lose focus pretty easy. So continually check it becuase it truly sucks to get home and find out the sky was not in focus.

So its that time of year again when I start taking more photos. Or in this case a timelapse of the night sky.

K-1 is slightly lighter than the Nikon D850.

1010g vs 1015g

Dims are:

K-1 137X110X86
D850 146X124X79

Everyone knows how horrible that camera is. /s
