A fps increase is a given - the K-1's mechanics are good for at least 6.5fps, and it's limited by the sensor (+ accelerator on the K-1 II). Which I expect to change in the next model.
I hope they'll increase the buffer, too. A faster buffer clearing speed is also expected - even the tiny GR III can write at double the K-1's speed.
I try not to raise my expectations unreasonably high, but it's difficult :)
You're welcome... there is fake enthusiasm (like a certain YouTube reviewer's) and then there's genuine enthusiasm...

To give you a taste of what's coming, we're expecting a completely new AF (first in the upcoming APS-C flagship). OoKU said it will have "more than 99" AF points, this is quite a jump.
And I don't think we'll have to wait long until a K-1 replacement with the same improvements appears.
If that would be enough or not, if you would get the equipment and support you need... I cannot say.
But Pentax clearly would benefit from your enthusiasm :) So would this community.

Same.
And I hope you'll recover quickly from the Covid-induced setback.
Too bad you couldn't stay / they didn't keep you... as Pentax now is making some big steps forward.

Always good to hear from you, kenspo. Your practical experience with Pentax gear stands you (with your broader experience with other systems) in good stead here.
I hope your work situation recovers well, and soon.

Thanks for stopping by. Was wondering where your journey in gear had taken you and what perspective that would bring. Thank you for sharing.

Nice to hear from you!
I think many thinking warmly about Pentax (even bashers out there) are paying a big attention on what is coming from Pentax. We all know that it is possible to make excellent AF with mirror in camera. Just to look at Canon and Nikon, especially Canons latest and greatest. It might be too much to expect something like that, but looking at that DFA*85 monster, I’m not actually anymore sure if they would not be ready to drop big yen’s for developement of AF, buffer, ...
Anyways stay healthy! At least in Finland as it seems to be in Norway too(poor swedes) it is getting back to normal. Hopefully by September at latest. Seems like you will be able to complete your journey back to Pentax by 2021..

Your insights in to other gear from your particular perspective are very interesting - thank you! It's clear Ricoh are working on the AF, but whether they can catch a moving target to up for debate - we'll have to see how much progress the new APS-C makes. There will come a time, I guess, when AF can't improve much without so much investment that it wouldn't be commercially viable to implement it, and that will give Pentax a chance to catch up a little more - but whether the sensors will be optimised for ML by then or whether Pentax can even weather the ML storm is all up in the air. But good to hear from you - please do keep checking back - what you have to say is valuable, as well as always being nice to to hear from old friends :)

Back home again from our epic 7 week road trip. Left home with the K1 Mk2 and K3 Mk 2 in my bag, fitted out with Sigma 24mm f1.8. FA 43, Sig 70-200 f2.8, DA* 300 & FA 35-80.
Intitially used the 35-80, but it soon started playing up, getting very tight in its zoom action. Resorted to the 24 & 43 but quickly got frustrated being caught out with the wrong lens on the camera for the situation and windy weather making lens changes tricky. All the time Anne is happily shooting away with her K3 & DA 17-70....until it started to not focus, I suspect the SDM (worth repairing ?), she had packed a Sigma 18-250 as a back up.
Found a very good deal on Amazon for a 24-70 and had that delivered ahead to where we were staying three nights,
As per tradition, attached below is the very first shot taken with the 24-70 which only comes off the K1 mk2 for the Sigma 70-200 now. Very very happy with the purchase. Still have a lot to learn about the camera, it is a similar yet different beast and I am only starting to work my way through the shots. Will post more as I do so.
The mandatory first shot....really crappy conditions, but hey ! I wasn't waiting for perfect either so lets see what the Pentax 24-70 f2.8 can do under pressure.
Somewhat ironic that the first shot should be here.? or just appropriate. Attachment 430301 Attachment 430302 Attachment 430303 Attachment 430304 |

Thank you Kenspo for your quick feedback and positive words about pentax! If needed, it well underlines that there is no perfect gear / brand and that we all have to compromise.
Good that you enjoy your new Canon gear which makes your life easier, it was your main motive for switching brand.

That's pretty much it. I've been evaluating files for making extra large prints with the 645z and K1, then I also ended up using full size stock photos that I wanted for the composition, a lot of images are from Canon 5D series due the volume of photographs taken with Canon, but wow, I had to significantly lower my expectation of print size with the files from Canon, the drop in IQ from Pentax to Canon is striking. If I wouldn't use Pentax, there is no way I'd use Canon, I for sure would take a D850 or move straight to a 645z or GFX50. With Canon, the resolution is lower (except for the 5DSr) and there is a anti-alias filter on top which remote some of the details and there is this extra chroma noise immediately visible in the shadow areas. The D850 is a better choice.

This mirrors my own experience with Pentax*. I have difficulty in differentiating if Pentax PR and marketing dpt of late are being actively inept or just completely incompetent.
* I was never a brand ambassador for Pentax. I was dealing with Pentax before the merger with Hoya, I did correspond with their lens designers for a time.

I appreciated Kenspo giving us insight into why he switched in and out of the K-mount ecosystem. He raises some valid points about the deficiencies in the K-1. As an ambassador, he is the perfect position to voice this. He has done this in a polite and respectful manner. A big thanks to Kenspo!

You don't have to explain. The slow buffer speed of K-1 family is well-known here ..... in fact, almost every discussion wanders into that area sooner or later. I have to admit that personally I was shocked to here that you were trying to make that work for you.

If you look at stories coming out of Photokina, the Panasonic will be mentioned prominently ......Ricoh will be an after thought, if at all.
