Pentax Full Frame DSLR Camera to be Announced in November

Nor am I brand obsessed: I have Pentax K-3, K-5 IIs and two Q7s, a Nikon D810 and Df, a Panasonic GX7, an Olympus EM-5, and a Canon 50D, all of which I enjoy using regularly. But for some reason, I just cannot bring myself to want a Sony camera: that's just me. But the point I was really making is that I come to this forum to discuss Pentax/Ricoh cameras and lenses. I really don't care for irrelevant comparisons with lenses that will not fit a K-mount. Others may think differently, of course.

I agree. I think most of the bashing on this site falls into four broad categories (smaller first):
  • Those whose purchase did not perform to their expectations and who sing one song year after year at top volume describing the P.O.S. product, even long after the product EOL

  • The "Not For Me so Not for Anybody" group mentioned above

  • Those who purchased Pentax cameras and lenses and who are embarrassed at having bought into a system that does not promptly match the competitor's features point by point at 80% of the price/size/weight.

  • Those who cherry pick the features across brands available at all price points, find that 85% are met with a Pentax product at their price point, and who whine for years that Pentax is slow to implement the remaining 15% to result in the "perfect" camera. Never mind that the desired mix is generally not available in any brand at any price point. A common characteristic of this group is the assertion that the feature could be added at zero cost as a firmware update.

Anyone noting a thread of narcissism wending through all four groups would not be incorrect.

With a dumb slave, all you need is a trigger that fires other flashes set to M (or A) - that's what the SL2 mode is for. Basically you just need to set your built in or hot shoe flash to M at low power level and you're ready to go. With a P-TTL controller/slave system you have whole communication protocol - a flash that triggers P-TTL slaves to fire a metering pre-flash, another flash that tells the slaves what power to use (based on camera metering system and exposure parameters) and a sync flash that triggers the slaves at required power level.

I don't think you understand what the super resolution is. It's not upscaling an image to get more megapixels (eg upscaling 2k-4k) which blurs the detail you have because you can't add detail that's not there, it's not stitching multiple photos together to get more x and y resolution, which can easily be done in post. This takes a sample of the rgb values at every pixel giving the image more color resolution than standard images, where one pixel only records an r, g, or b value and the processing engine samples the surrounding pixels to make up the missing color information. This is why if you ever look at the images from the Foveon sensor, they have unprecedented detail per pixel where typical sensors tend to look very blurry at the pixel level. This is also why silly marketing people at Sigma advertise their cameras to have thrice their real resolution.

And these are great (the bolded), unlike efforts wasted on a measly on-board flash. You are also forgetting improvements in SR, both in effectiveness and panning capability (this one returning) plus a number of minor improvements. I consider this a bigger upgrade than K5 to K5ii (and I have both of those cameras).

Panorama stitching has it's own problems and they are not few.

Pentax full frame rumour

The "thread in which I allegedly "decisively lost an argument" has you claiming that
  1. Ricoh was behind Pentax USA's UPP, and

  2. that Ned is not a liar when he states on his blog that Ricoh had no involvement with Pentax USA's UPP.

You also put words into my mouth (stating that I made a "desperate attempt to make "Ned" a liar.") while nothing could be further from the truth.

You didn't use these exact words, but surely in many posts you tried to paint the picture of a dependent Sony that must not upset the powerful Nikon.

Here are a few examples of what you have written:
"I suspect that the deal between Nikon (design) and Sony (manufacture) excludes FF sensors going to another company."
"With that much volume and interdependence, and the fact that Nikon FF in particular have redefined the market segment, the common structure for such design and manufacture involves a lot of investment protection, including licensing prerogatives and exclusivity of supply. but I suspect that Sony relies on Nikon imaging feedback to calibrate its product."
"Sony will not upset that apple cart, especially when Sony is financially in the red, by turning FF sensor production into a commodity product generically available to all Pentax offering FF could only budge the market by a couple of % at most, whereas Sony upsetting Nikon could lose them 90% of that revenue."
"As I have pointed ou many times on this forum, all indications are that Nikon, who buy 100% of Sony's FF sensors over the last year, have a "special" deal with Sony. It certainly appears that way. I doubt Pentax can simply knock on Sony's door and buy FF sensors. Industrial supply with co-developed tech doesn't work to that simple sales model."(The "co-developed tech" is your, apparently Thom Hogan fed assumption, no evidence of it being true exists, to the best of my knowledge.)
"There is no way Sony is going to upset its largest customer by selling the same tech to Pentax to undercut Nikon and reduce overall margins. If anyone will choose to compete with Nikon it will be Sony itself. Sony has been in the red for 5 years on balance now. They will not jeopardize margins nor revenue streams. "
"It appears that Sony has already made their deal with Nikon, which largely came at the expense of Sony's FF efforts, leaving probably no room for another party like Pentax."

If, after all this, you now want to claim that you always have been pointing to a sensor price issue only and that exclusivity deals have never been an issue, well, good luck.

Obviously any longer-lasting exclusivity deal (a notion, I always rejected) would imply that Nikon is the mightier partner in the relationship with Sony. Why else would Sony enter exclusivity deals? Many have argued with you about your assumption that Nikon can dictate deals. I, for example, argued that Nikon really has no choice but buying Sony sensors (alternatives, anyone?) and hence Sony is in a better position to dictate deals than Nikon is. I have never excluded the possibility of deals that give Nikon a head start compared to other camera manufacturers in return for certain sales guarantees, but always opposed your notion of Nikon being able to make Sony exclude other sensor buyers for more than a few months.

I don't see how you can now say "I never said that Sony "must" play by Nikon's rules. ", except if you mean, "I've never used these exact words.".

IIRC they went through several iterations of the colors - from just one to several and then one more generation past that

Colors was their design language at the time, and it was seen throughout their product line

Even their serious graphic workstations weren't immune

And if you recall, this was at a time when Apple was actually lagging behind Windows in terms of technology. Their OS 7 was limping along on 10+ year old code and PowerPC chips were seriously lagging behind Intel. But the graphics community loved them. Their distinctive design probably saved them.

And the trend continued with iPods

And even as Apple moved away from colors, they were still willing to hang it out there and take design risks

With all of this in mind, I give Pentax credit for not producing another me-too camera. They know as well as anybody that they're not going to beat Canon and Nikon by trying to be Canon or Nikon. Likewise, Pentax won't out-Sony Sony or out-Panasonic Panasonic. I for one am glad to see them take risks, otherwise this would be a dull forum for sure.

And look at that, not a single car reference! Toot Toot!

Pentax mirrorless/Evil system rumors!?

That is the train of thought I still don't understand. Supposedly Nikon is going to make their upcoming mirror-less cameras more like P&S's with interchangeable lenses and use a smaller than APS-C sensor just to protect their DSLR's. I see no reason why Pentax should do the same. The simple fact is mirror-less cameras are going to cannibalize DSLR's. Unless someone makes a digital version of an Olympus OM I will never own a DSLR again; and honestly, I don't even know that I would even then. Once you get used to see true DOF preview when composing through an EVF it's very tough going back to an OVF. OVF's are far superior for action, but I don't do action shots. For doing portraits, street shots, or landscapes; give me a large EVF.

Anyway, back on track...why should companies care if someone chooses a DSLR or an EVIL so long as they buy into a system with their logo on the body? EVIL's are simply a better choice for some styles of photography (I'd love to see a medium format EVIL for example, which is what I think Pentax should have done with the 645D). The simple fact is EVIL's already compete directly with DSLR's and no marketing choice by Nikon or Pentax is going to change that. Pentax should make the best EVIL system they can and protecting their DSLR's shouldn't be a factor. In fact, in my perfect world they'd make an EVIL system with a full frame sensor, thus positioning their mirror-less system above their DSLR's.

But we are not talking about DSLR, we are talking about micro 4/3 optimised for CDAF, as it's sole auto focusing method. The PDAF lenses (e.g. Olympus 14-42mm) work perfectly fine on a Panasonic GF1. It's just slower to focus than the Panasonic CDAF 14-45mm. But the focus DOES work well, and is accurate. Have you actually used one of these cameras?

The "smart" electronics would emulate a CDAF lens.
i.e. To the micro 4/3 camera, it sees a CDAF lens. The extra electronics would NOT make AF slower.

No, that's not right. Have you actually watched a micro 4/3 lens focus?

Catch-in Focus questin on K-x

Make sure your camera is in AF.A or AF.S before you switch it to your MF lens. It's one of those lame firmware bugs they still haven't fixed. And yeah, it doesn't work with autofocus lenses (even my Tamron 70-200mm which has an AF/MF switch on the lens). That's also on the wishlist...

If your AF mode is set correctly before you attach your 50mm, then it should work. The body AF/MF switch also needs to be on AF. Does it just take pictures even when you set it on the wrong focus?

It should work with all K/M/A series lenses, and if your tubes short out the contacts on the lens mount (or you do manually with foil. Workaround is on the wishlist, of course), it should also work with them. You can also play with reversal rings and stick that 50mm backwards on to your DA 18-55mm.

The cheapest way for Pentax to make FF camera

What a load of...

It's not a valid technical reason just because you say so. Is it the theoretically ideal mount? Of course not. But, does it have to be changed? What for? You are unable to point to a single reason, why Pentax should give up to the K-mount. And why Nikon shouldn't ;)
Also, you're ignoring the consequences - suddenly losing all their market share - which most likely means their death. Ignorance is your middle name.

You don't even know about their lens lines? Your Cluelessness, the FA lens line is dead, replaced by the "digital" versions (as the FA line replaced the F, F the A, A the M...). Few FA lenses are still in production, but no new one were/will be made since then.
But DFA, come on... even you should know about the DFA 100mm f/2.8 WR. And you should also know about the 2 brand-new lenses, the 35mm f/2.4 and the 18-135 WR, both K-mount. Yes, clueless one, Pentax is still launching new K-mount lenses...

And remember: Pentax is still alive. Who cares if it's a division of Hoya Corporation, or Pentax Corporation? They're alive.

If the new lenses are really the 35mm and the 18-125mm

Not sure about this one.

The DA ltd lineup is made of pancakes ranging from 15mm to 70mm.
DA15mm/f4
DA21mm/f3.2
DA35mm/f2.8
DA40mm/f2.8
DA70mm/f2.4

To me this look pretty much complete apart between 40 and 70 maybe, but then fro someone who needs the focal length FA43/1.9, FA50/1.4 and DA*55/1.4 are all extremely valuable alternatives.

On the high end of lenses, Pentax can produce more DA* primes, bigger, faster and with weather-sealing compared to their ltd siblings.

DA*18/2.8
DA*35/1.4
DA*85/1.4

Can complete nicely the high end lineup.

But, sure, as much as I love the Kx, the lack of cheap 24 (eq 40) 35 (eq 50) or 50 (eq 85) gives a hard time advising to invest in the Pentax system for a serious beginner on a budget.

I believe at the moment, there is a gap between the snapshot maker who want "prettier" pictures than their compact (with a K-x + 18-55) and the "serious" user who is willing to invest 1000€/$ for a setup with decent creativity potential (K-x + 35ltd or DA21ltd)

The later are really fantastic combos and great teacher for someone willing to learn seriously but a 35/2 at 200€/$ would just be more relevant for this population (before they drool on the DAltd lineup ...)
