You are 100% right. You don't need a dedicated lens. In my kid/student days, I used to take macro photos with any lens I had. I'd snug up to just about anything with my M-50/2, or my 135mm offbrand POS, and I had a set of three inexpensive Vivitar close-up filters. I used those a LOT and did get some pretty nice photos.

Catalina Island this weekend. I took 3 lenses, but ended up using the 35mm Macro DA Limited almost exclusively. CatalinaSunrise by Susan, on Flickr CatalinaSunrise2 by Susan, on Flickr CatalinaPier by Susan, on Flickr CatalinaHillside1 by Susan, on Flickr CatalinaAfternoon by Susan, on Flickr

I took 361 pictures in 3 days. That's probably a record for me! :) I had a wonderful time, too.

WOW! So who needs a flash (I was very reticent about giving up my on-camera flash) when you can take such clear, sharp pictures in dim light? The picture of the small brown dog is a dark dog on a dark floor in a dim room. There is no retouch on this at all. JPG format, direct upload. Now to find out where the raw format on this is. I may shoot JPG for a while to get back in practice and then use the RAW button. Not sure yet.
Oh is this going to be FUN! Here's Remy. Remy by Susan, on Flickr

No flash, no retouch. Used my trusty tank, the 100mm Macro. |

I have wanted a K-3 for years now, and this week I finally ordered the K-3 II, using a gift certificate at B&H. It arrives this afternoon. It will be quite a step up from my K5, and will probably be my main camera for years and years. It's probably more camera than I need, but I am so excited.
I put my batteries on the chargers so I could have power and be ready to go when I un-box it.
This last year has been crazy with a move to a new house, so I have not been around much. Now I'm settled and I'm ready to get back out there shooting. My new house has a pond in the neighborhood, plus lots of nice walking areas. Stay tuned for lots of pictures.

Some favorite DA15 photos from my trip to Nevada. I know the lens makes the mountains look small, but it really conveys the vast landscape.
Looking away from Atl Atl Rock.
In the Beehive area.
This is one of my favorites from Red Rock Canyon. I'm using it on my phone as wallpaper. |

Second day in the desert. I had all kinds of trouble this day with exposure, white balance, and color correction. I had polarizing filters on since the sun was already fairly high at 9am, which probably contributed to my problems. The bad thing is, I didn't realize I had so much trouble until seeing my pictures in Lightroom back home.
Entering the Valley of Fire State Park. It was at the end of a 11 mile winding road through the desert. Very barren area. Tamron 28-300 at 28mm
Pile of rocks. I'm assuming the valley gets its name from the veins of red rock running through he regular buff and gray sandstone. DA15
DA15 - near the Beehive rock formations.
One of my favorite pictures of the day. Looking through a hole in the rock. DA15.
The wind erosion made for some very interesting textures. DA15
Still at the Beehive area. Some typical wind erosion patterns here. DA15
Chipmunk at the visitor's center. Cropped a bit. The only creatures stirring were tourists, chipmunks, and some sparrows. Tamron 28-300 @ 300.
Petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock. There were 50 stairs leading up to this. I was lazy and used my Tamron 28-300mm lens to take the picture from ground level.
Another moonrise picture. Headed back to I-15 to go back to town. DA35mm/Macro |

I am back from my trip to Las Vegas. I am so unused to crowds and noise from living in the country that the city was noisy, overwhealming, and claustrophobic to me. I escaped to the desert.
First day was at the Red Rock Canyon State park.

The rock is very textured. The mountains were formed from solidified sand dunes which have wind-eroded over time. Tamron
More texture. Tamron
The mountains have stripes of different veins of rock in them, as you can see here. Manged to catch a moonrise as well. Tamron.
From a distance. DA15 |

Some sunset pictures from last night using my DA15.
Now I notice I missed a spot. It was very dusty in that area and I got some on my lens which I didn't notice until processing.
The road which was the source of the dust...
I really love this K-5! It was effortless to move from the K20D to this one. I think it fits my hands even better.

Nearby lake a bit before the golden hour. The photos before the golden hour were more interesting because of the clouds which cleared out by sunset. |

I am CONVINCED! :) Though I had little doubt I'd love this lens. These photos were taken this morning shortly after sunrise before I headed off to work. What you see is part of my land (2.5 acre lot).
And portrait mode:
Here is hoping for some interesting skies this weekend (without tornadoes, please).

The price was right... :) I'm most likely to go wide instead of telephoto. I know my Tamron is considered an average lens, but for the moment it'll do for the telephoto side of things.
SOMEwhere in my stuff is a 500mm K mount. Old manual. I just can't find it right now.
Now to save up for a fisheye 10-17... ---------- Post added 05-15-14 at 04:08 PM ----------

I've been out and about learning my new-to-me K-5. Here are a few of my favorite shots so far. All three taken with my FA 100/2.8 Macro, which I have re-named "the tank." |
