This place is Higashi-chayagai, 15 minute walk away from the Kanazawa station. Kenroku-en is one of the most famous Japanese style garden. Kenroku-en was build for the lord and samurais. However, Higashi-chayagai was for both samurai and town people. You could find another aspect of the old city. If you have a chance to visit Kanazawa, I strongly recommend this place.

I took this photo when staying in Kanazawa, Japan. Kanazawa is a typical historical city as well as Kyoto. Especially culture for both samurai and ordinary people flourished in the Edo era. The area in this photo prospered as watering holes. Old houses made of wood stand even today shoulder to shoulder. You can see geishas if you are lucky.

The “samurai” culture has been maintained for 400 years in Japan. The value and philosophy of this tradition is not always understood accurately by even Japanese. The “samurai” culture is not how to die, such as “hara-kiri”. It means a simple life, sitting well in the nature. This philosophy can be touched in old cities such as Kyoto or Kanazawa. I took this photography at Kenroku-en in Kanazawa. Kenroku-en is one of the traditional Japanese-style gardens which were designed in the Muromachi to Edo period. This garden shows the concepts of old about lifestyle in nature.

Adobe Photoshop was used in the post processing. The photograph is monotonous, therefore, edges and lines were somewhat enhanced to keep away from sleepy image. I considered a black and white photo, using a monotonous image, but the black and white image could not exhibit the cold and translucent state of ambient air.
