New 50-135 is the lens I've been waiting for since i bought K3III. 16-85 is okayish and 55-300 can be good in certain scenarios but nowhere near Tamron 70-200 I also have and rarely feel inclined to lug around. Hope it comes out some day.

I've been waiting for updated 50-135 since I got K3III. Tamron 70-200 I have is just too big and Pentax one is a non starter on weight alone. I hope they release it relatively soon.
BTW, just got back from holidays carrying 15,31,43, 16-85 and 55-300PLM. Of these, I used most 15, then 31 and 55-300.
16-85 is just too flat. It's an ok lens with nice colors but frankly, I used my S23U instead and felt ok. Maybe at some point I get new 16-50, switching from 15 to 31 and back was inconvenient at pace and within crowd, even though the photos are great.
55-300PLM on K3III was really nice for birds, another level (and then some) compared to Tammy.

Is there anything new on 50-135 PLM? That was supposedly close to release in summer and since then not a peep.
16-50 is nice but anyway I prefer to use 15/31/43 in that range and use 16-85 rarely. On the other hand, Tammy 70-200 is huge and screw driven and I feel 50-135 would be a big improvement there.

FWIW K100D Super I got in 2007 (and gave to my father some years ago) still does the CCD magic. Great little gem of a camera.
Viewfinder pitch black coming from K3III though :)

Talking about investment, every year I visit my parents home I dust off that little clunker (K100DS) and take it for a walk. 15 years old and still a joy to use.

My silver K3iii serial is 2609959 and I bought it in spring 2021 so that upper boundary on silver should be higher.

I have the same thing but rarely. It confirms focus even though the whole photo comes out blurry. Zooming in and out does the trick but I usually see it after the fact.

FWIW after many years of use I replaced Tamron 17-50 with Pentax 16-85 last year when I got the K3III. It's a decent lens and much more versatile (and pleasing) in good light, but I don't find it particularly well suited for indoor shots. Myself, I use primes inside - I much prefer their rendering to Tamron and 16-50 PLM feels too big to me at the moment.
Hard to beat Tamron considering value (and flexibility) for money, though.

I've noticed all my lenses struggle to get ideal focus in auto modes in relatively poor or flat light when wide open. So I mostly use zone and smaller aperture in such circumstances.
No issues in good light.

I have FA43 and M50/1.7 and I can understand why someone would prefer the latter, especially considering the price ( I paid 50 EUR for M and 400 for 43). It is sharp across the frame and has that nice Pentax color. Build quality is about the same.
However with 43 it's easier, at least for me, to get that pop in images of people. I guess that's due to design and I appreciate it. I own also 16-85 but I'll rather deal with lens changes than use it if I want to capture the mood. Yes, it's sharp, yes colors are nice, but it's somehow flat compared to these two.

16-85 is pretty sharp, even clinical. I used Tamron 17-50 before that for many years but always felt something is lacking. Switched to pentax zoom, which is IMHO better lens - more uniformly sharp, more vivid colors, but still, somehow bland.
Compared to my primes, it just doesn't have that wow factor.

I use 31 and 43 a lot on k3iii. Actually, by myself I'll carry 15,31 and 43, and only take 16-85 (and very rarely 70-200) if there are people involved and I'm supposed to take photos.

4x6?! Luxury! Try 2x3, black and white, and calling that black is very generous. :D
I gathered a few boxes of extended family photos and films and I'm in the very long process of digitizing them, so yeah, we are spoiled today.

I started making family albums some time ago and that seemingly irrelevant decision brought many insights. Most of these are probably obvious to many, but to me was a kind of revelation.
The albums I make are 13x11 on matte fancy paper (I use blurb).
* K5II for sure, and in some cases various mobile phones we have, with a touch of Lightroom and TopazLabs stuff here and there, produce perfectly fine results on this format. Yes, you can tell which is which, but none are really bad. My anxiety I won't be able to capture the moment was mostly unfounded.
* APS-C is it for me and 16mp is enough. Yes I have K3III but for other reasons; if it was 16mp I'd still go for it. I printed K5II photos up to 28x36 and found no case where I felt I need more resolution. This settled my dilemma about FF or mirrorless or whatever I didn't have.
* more to the topic, the point of the album is to evoke memories, and surprisingly, the more photos I had of the occasion, the less memories they evoked. Like Dave above, I have few childhood photos but each contains a story, and smells and feelings. This made me change the way I use camera with family; I'll just leave it aside and take a photo if I feel the moment requires it. Otherwise, I'll enjoy the moment. No taking photos for the sake of it.
* We look at albums together, slowly, and I try to make kids pause and remember and discuss things while at particular photo. Hopefully they'll learn it's not about what's on the photo but what's around the photo. It's a different thing than skimming through mobile gallery.
* photos on larger format paper are so much more pleasing to look at than on screen. Screens are tiresome and push you to move on.
So yeah, less photos, on paper, very different and IMHO much more rewarding experience.

I passed on 16-50 as I have that range covered with primes and 16-85 is good enough for walk-around. Now 50-135... that's something that will be very hard to resist.

After years of using Tamron 17-50 as standard zoom I got 16-85 last year shortly after getting K3III. Tammy was already on the way to fall apart but still usable, yet it sits in the cupboard since.
Yes, it is sharper and brighter however it renders somewhat dull and, at least in my eyes, introduces much more distortion at wide end. Pentax also gets nicer colors in non-ideal light. Still, at 1100USD it's a murder; I paid less than 300 EUR for new Tammy several years ago.
And then I put on 15/31/43 and 16-85 starts looking flat and dull. :D Anyway, it's my first choice for one lens situations.

@BruceBanner
Personally, I thing something is wrong with K3III you had access to, either firmware, or settings, or hardware itself.
The reason I'm reiterating my experience is that you are generalizing based on, well, sample size of 1. K3III AF sucks, ergo, it's worse not only than Fuji but previous Pentaxes, ergo, it's overpriced, ergo you and many others are leaving. I disagree based on my sample size of 1.
I'm sure the one you had sucked for whatever reason, and it's fair enough you have the opinion you have. I also have opinions about Fuji, but I don't think they are relevant to other people. :D

@BruceBanner
FWIW I find your experience with K3III AF very different from mine. I moved from K5II to K3III last year and used mostly 43, 16-85, 15 and 31 (in that order). AF.C actually worked and AF.S was so reliable that I went back from BBAF to shutter and half of time used Auto zone.
I briefly fiddled with AF tuning but found it a waste of time as I could not see any consistent difference and lenses worked fine anyway.
I have no experience with previous K3 models or K1 line but difference in AF between K5II and K3III is immense; to the point I'm not really stressing about focus unless I'm shooting wide open and then again it's more about DOF than AF mechanism.
To say it's a step back, based on my experience, is ludicrous.

Spec wise looks like a great little camera. The price is brutal, but that's where we are going it seems.
The comments are priceless. If it's not FF MILC it's junk.
K3III is junk because DSLR is dinosaur tech, and OM1 is junk because MFT is not FF.
You read that stuff, first you ask yourself are you crazy, then if you were exposed to psychological warfare. What's wrong with having a rugged little body with a lot of reach?

Again, I was addressing DPR :) People working non-trivial jobs are usually not so easily replaceable unless the job market is dire.
If an executive behaved in the way you described in the company I work for, or I behaved in such a way to my engineering team, the whole thing would fall apart in 3-6 months and god help whoever comes after. Yes, it could be prolonged by money, but only partially and you'd lose top talent anyway.

This feudal practice might work for some time if there is ample supply of workers, work is not complicated and compensation is above average. The thing is, the people who tolerate this aren't the people you can build the business on.

The question was about DPR strategy. They were positioning themselves as a premier photography gear site and now it doesn't feel like that anymore. Frankly it wouldn't surprise me if I see a washing machine review there soon.
OTOH, isn't Q dead?
