Talking about investment, every year I visit my parents home I dust off that little clunker (K100DS) and take it for a walk. 15 years old and still a joy to use.

My silver K3iii serial is 2609959 and I bought it in spring 2021 so that upper boundary on silver should be higher.

I've noticed all my lenses struggle to get ideal focus in auto modes in relatively poor or flat light when wide open. So I mostly use zone and smaller aperture in such circumstances.
No issues in good light.

4x6?! Luxury! Try 2x3, black and white, and calling that black is very generous. :D
I gathered a few boxes of extended family photos and films and I'm in the very long process of digitizing them, so yeah, we are spoiled today.

I started making family albums some time ago and that seemingly irrelevant decision brought many insights. Most of these are probably obvious to many, but to me was a kind of revelation.
The albums I make are 13x11 on matte fancy paper (I use blurb).

* K5II for sure, and in some cases various mobile phones we have, with a touch of Lightroom and TopazLabs stuff here and there, produce perfectly fine results on this format. Yes, you can tell which is which, but none are really bad. My anxiety I won't be able to capture the moment was mostly unfounded.
* APS-C is it for me and 16mp is enough. Yes I have K3III but for other reasons; if it was 16mp I'd still go for it. I printed K5II photos up to 28x36 and found no case where I felt I need more resolution. This settled my dilemma about FF or mirrorless or whatever I didn't have.
* more to the topic, the point of the album is to evoke memories, and surprisingly, the more photos I had of the occasion, the less memories they evoked. Like Dave above, I have few childhood photos but each contains a story, and smells and feelings. This made me change the way I use camera with family; I'll just leave it aside and take a photo if I feel the moment requires it. Otherwise, I'll enjoy the moment. No taking photos for the sake of it.
* We look at albums together, slowly, and I try to make kids pause and remember and discuss things while at particular photo. Hopefully they'll learn it's not about what's on the photo but what's around the photo. It's a different thing than skimming through mobile gallery.
* photos on larger format paper are so much more pleasing to look at than on screen. Screens are tiresome and push you to move on.

So yeah, less photos, on paper, very different and IMHO much more rewarding experience.

I passed on 16-50 as I have that range covered with primes and 16-85 is good enough for walk-around. Now 50-135... that's something that will be very hard to resist.

Not understanding comments about Pentax

@BruceBanner

Personally, I thing something is wrong with K3III you had access to, either firmware, or settings, or hardware itself.

The reason I'm reiterating my experience is that you are generalizing based on, well, sample size of 1. K3III AF sucks, ergo, it's worse not only than Fuji but previous Pentaxes, ergo, it's overpriced, ergo you and many others are leaving. I disagree based on my sample size of 1.
I'm sure the one you had sucked for whatever reason, and it's fair enough you have the opinion you have. I also have opinions about Fuji, but I don't think they are relevant to other people. :D

Spec wise looks like a great little camera. The price is brutal, but that's where we are going it seems.
The comments are priceless. If it's not FF MILC it's junk.
K3III is junk because DSLR is dinosaur tech, and OM1 is junk because MFT is not FF.
You read that stuff, first you ask yourself are you crazy, then if you were exposed to psychological warfare. What's wrong with having a rugged little body with a lot of reach?

This feudal practice might work for some time if there is ample supply of workers, work is not complicated and compensation is above average. The thing is, the people who tolerate this aren't the people you can build the business on.

When i moved from K100D to K5II pretty much everything was a huge jump - build, speed, viewfinder, shutter noise, resolution - except the feel of the photos. They just looked cold. Took long time to get over it and i still like to grab K100D when I visit my parents. Yes, it's clunky and slow and dim but I just like the tones it produces.

Moving from K5II to K3III I just don't look back. Yes I keep it as a second body but see no reason to choose it over K3III.

Just today I dealed again with user modes. Names are I guess self explanatory

U1 AF.C TAv - Auto expanded zone AF. This is set when camera is given to another person to click the button when there is expected slow movement in the frame.
U2 AF.S Av - Auto expanded zone AF. This is set when camera is given to another person to click the button when everyone in the frame is trying to hold still.
U3 AF.C TAv Burst - Auto expanded zone AF, panning SR, high burst mode. This is set when camera is given to another person to click and hold the button when rapid movement of something in the initial frame is expected.

When another person is not given the camera, I stick to messing up the shot and then fiddling with settings. :)

Travel kit mostly wider end

From my perspective you're covered pretty good. Operational word being travel I'd go with 16-85 instead of 16-50 and 50-135 but that's a matter of personal preference.

My travel kit:

* K3iii with 16-85
* 15/31/43
* Sirui T-025x tripod

I can't be bothered to lug Tammy 70-200 even though it's a great lens. I mostly travel to cities so long end rarely plays.
I rarely use flash last couple of years so that stays home too.

OTOH if you're looking for encouragement to get new 16-50, go for it. :D I will probably get it at some point but right now I'm more into primes.

As someone who bought K3III, I can comment that I don't really care about performance or price differential to K1 line. I don't want a body of K1 size nor the big lenses that accompany it. I'm also not (yet) interested in mirrorless, so K3III looked like the best option to me when I bought it, and I'm not disappointed. Whatever next I get will be of similar size or (preferably) lighter/smaller. IQ/AF/ISO wise, K3III is more than enough for me and what I want next are smallish primes and eventually, a smaller/lighter body.

Wrt buffer size, maybe it's shallow for pro use, for me is more than enough.

Sigma 18-35mm on the K3iii?

I used this lens for many years as general purpose zoom.

Upsides:
* dirt cheap for what it provides
* very sharp
* light
* reasonably fast to focus

Downsides:
* poor build quality. After 10 years mine has pretty much fallen apart.
* very flat rendering, both in color and OOF transition
* significant distortion on wide end
* not weather sealed

In summary, it's a very sharp lens for low cost, which will show signs of wear and tear after several years of heavy use and rarely provide rich and striking images. Overall, worth the cost.

You guys might be right in your guess that direction Ricoh took is wrong (for whatever definition of wrong), but I don't see anything proving they misjudged or overestimated the market. They won't be a big player in total photography market anytime soon and most probably never. The niche they choose looks reasonable to me.

This is very true, but let's look at a wider picture. Do we know anyone we'd suggest an ILC?

People I know who used to have DSLRs went to phones never to come back. A few (well, one :D ) who showed interest I referred to other site reviews before I give any suggestion and he never came back.

Photography by a dedicated device is a niche. ILC is a niche of that.

My K-3 Mark III review.

It's really hard to give a definite recommendation to general audience. Pretty much any modern camera is really good at what it does.
What's 2k USD/EUR to you? Which components of "photography experience" matter to you? Where are you coming from, in terms of bodies and lenses? What bothers you with what you have?

So we can only talk specific circumstances and personal preferences.
First time I printed some 50cmx70cm photos taken with K5II was this year after I got K3III. To me they look amazing. I could probably go 4x the size and they'd still look amazing (I'd just need a bigger house and more walls to accommodate that). So I found out I don't really care about megapixels or even sensor advances that much. Realized stuff I have is more than capable to deliver whatever I could try. Yes, I struggled with AF and low light and, true, K3III improved that a lot, but did I really need it? Not really. Still have a lot of great photos.

Earlier this year I was thinking of getting A7III to see what FF and ML is about. Now I'm glad I didn't and am more inclined to spend that money on lenses. Went to store to see it - didn't like the looks at all. Didn't like Nikon Z either. K3III sits next to me as I type this and it looks perfect. Is that shallow? I don't know, probably.
But I enjoy using it.
Of course, YMMV.

Seems this place is due for a review from a non-professional, non-affiliated regular Joe. :)

I came back to trawl forums after a few years of life getting in the way of photography once K3III was close to release. I'm a hobbyist, not too ambitious or skilled one, and K5II was more than enough for me except for two things - frustration of not being able to capture the moment of kids/pets playing and being too bulky to always have around.

So K3III comes out and I have to make the call where that chunk of money goes - GRIII? A Fuji body? A7III?

Well I just went and sunk the money into K3III.
I like G3III idea but not that particular focal length. Maybe GRIV at some point.
Fuji, for all the hype, doesn't really tick my boxes. Can't push myself to like something I don't.
Now, Sony, that might happen at some point, though I'm not sure it'll be any time soon.

I guess my point is, all I needed from forums/reviews is that autofocus is up to standard for my needs. I know what Pentax does good and what not, and it's still the brand I like the most, regardless of video, card speed, mirror, weight, lack of flippy screen and whatever else.

Well, it is.
I enjoy taking photos of my kids running and jumping around with bulk being in focus without overthinking the technique and moment. My lenses focus fast without hunting. I stopped using back button and just click away.
High ISO is much better than what I had.
Camera is fast. ImageSync is nice to have.
Uses same batteries and lenses.
I even shelled out for 16-85 to get that quiet, weather sealed standard zoom.
Finally, I enjoy using it. Everything is where it should be, how it should be.

Back to the topic.
I had no issues with locking up, overheating, purple fringing, connection to ImageSync.
Haven't used tripod yet so no idea about shutter shock thing.

TLDR works perfectly for me, would buy again.

Do I *need* to upgrade from the "kit" lens?

Tamron 17-50 is relatively cheap (~360 EUR new) and significantly sharper and faster than kit lens. What it lacks is a wow factor - it's a reliable workhorse lens producing sharp images. I got it in 2014 and it served me well for what it is.
Getting primes is fine and dandy (I have a bunch) but you need that standard zoom. There are pricier and better options, but this one is the cheapest of 'good' upgrades.
