Hi Radeon,
Sorry to hear about the K-7. the main reason I upgraded was that I have had a few problems the last few times I used my K3 when auto focus would stop working..it only seemed to happen with a few lenses...my pentax 16-50 and a sigma 24mm...other lenses would continue to work fine...i don't know if maybe it was because the camera got overheated..after a while I could put those lenses on and they would work again. at any rate, I thought the upgrade wouldn't hurt. when I read what the upgrade was intended to do it didn't seem applicable, but I went ahead with it....the upgrade thing, both for camera and computer, has always baffled me a little...I haven't returned to the shooting conditions that initiated my concern but will be doing the same gig next sunday..This has been the long answer..the short answer is: no, I haven't noticed any improvements. It would be interesting to hear from those with more technical knowledge about whether or not the camera should always be upgraded as a matter of principle, or only when something might be going wrong.

Greetings,
I have been shooting with a K3 for about 1.5 years now...almost all of my work is done in a tv studio shooting jazz musicians recording a show 3-4 times a month. I am accustomed to working with varying light situations (mostly dim and I am required to be anywhere from 15-25 feet away from the players) and for some time I have been able to figure out what my limits are as far as noise in photos and my ability to process.
In the last two sessions it seems that I am getting an inordinate amount of noise in all of my shots. this week when viewing at 100% I had high noise levels in several shots taken in good light, allowing me to shoot at ISO 200, 1/160, f5. these particular shots were taken using a pentax 77mm on the K3, but the presence of more-than-usual noise came with all of my lenses(sigma 24mm, pentax 16-50mm, tamron 90mm, pentax 14mm). It wasn't anything I couldn't process especially as the pictures are generally used by the players for social media etc. but it surprised me and I felt the quality of my work was considerably lower than I shoot for.
I am shooting RAW and always without flash.
can a damaged sensor increase noise levels like this across the board? ;)

in difficult situations don't hesitate..perfect conditions do not mean perfect photos...don't be intimidated when you don't have them. In low or challenging light I put my focal point slightly left or right to increase chances for good composition, use a tripod, then shoot with rapid-fire..you can capture a story or an essence or the spirit of the subject even if a dozen things are technically against it. this picture is f 1.7, 1/100. iso 400 pentax k-3, sigma 24 mm. To whatever degree you call yourself a perfectionist, be willing to be an imperfectionist to the same degree.

my apologies...this is way late and probably not of much interest to any one at this point. I did send the camera back to B&H, they were very responsive and got another camera back to me within 3 days of receiving my return...the new camera needed a firmware update...I did that and have been using it almost daily ever since with no problems.
thanks to everyone for their responses and opinions and experience sharing.
