Thanks for your response again, I'm enjoying this discussion and learning a lot. I'm trading in my kit lens and getting an 18-135. I think based on price, IQ, zoom it will be good on my holiday in Europe last week with the new KP. I'll keep you updated!

@RGasel
Thanks for your response. I found it greatly helpful. I think you pragmatic advice will put in good stead for my lens choices. I noticed your a K30 user--I love that camera, my first pentaxove.
I had a qurstions many people have said the 16-85 is superior IQ. In your experience does the versatility of 18-135 trump this for this use? It's heavier and more expensive (220 vs 350). Basically that is the choice I need to make.
Many thanks again everyone.

@officousbystander great to hear your experience. For sure constraint of primes makes you think more about the shot. Only going for 4 days right schedule and tight budget for this time try a zoom but aim to assemble a prime kit for travel.

Hi Bruce Banner. That was an hulk post! Really useful to hear your in depth thoughts on 20-40 Ltd. I understand where you are coming from re WR and FF especially when you have the K1 you would like common lenses. I also second your thoughts that the FL on the lens is more useful on FF than on a crop sensor. The photogrpahs are stunning. Have you manage to use it for portraits at all? Thanks.

Thank you all for such fantastic advice. Alot of food for thought. So far lots of recommendations fo the 18-135. Compact, WR, cheap, good range just have reservations about IQ.
@TER-OR interesting comment about the DA21 and your friend's being jealous. I think this might be the next prime I look at although if I get a zoom, many others have suggested the DA15 for cities.
@officiousbystander That is what I am worried about, I am hooked onto primes but this won't be practice on a family holiday with 2 young kids- probably need one lens to rule them or a couple a zoom and a prime. The IQ of even the plastic primes is amazing for me compared to the kit lens and it makes already compact camera light weight.
@Sandy Hancock Beautiful photographs of Europe- inspirational

Thanks again everyone. I've taken on board all of your expert advise and been shooting with the camera. It is definitely an upgrade to the K30 in terms of functions. I have to be honest ever with my primes I don't see much difference in IQ, perhaps this is because I am viewing the images on a 4k screen. AF- with the 50mm 1.8 is a bit hit and miss with young kids, especially in doors. I am not sure I had used the flipping screen much yet, I am sure situations will present themselves. The ergonomics are growing on me. Is there any way to change the back button focusing to another bottom, finding the placement a little awkward.

@tljensen
Thanks for your response, it helps in deciding between 18-135 vs 16-85-- my focus is on IQ rather and telezoom or price. Which grip do you use with the KP and the 16-85? Do you often find you need to go wider than 16mm?

I have the kp. This thread answers some of my qurstions
Sounds like as long as a large grip is used it is quite balanced. Does anyone have any photogrpahs of the combo itself please? Kp with 16-85.... All the promo stuff of KP has it with 20-40.

Thanks @gatorguy
@reh321 good to know the team members!!! Herd nothing bu praise for both those lenses. Were you tempted at all by the 16-85 da hd pentax? Supposed to have better IQ then the 18-135 or were in it for the reach? It is expensive...

Hey again all. Thank you for the great numbers of replies especially nocturnal and BruceBanner. I am always struck the high degree of expert advice in the forum. I especially take on board the number of themese:
The 20-40 lt is not a lens for holiday snaps!
Shooting JPEG is not ideal- ie shooting raw give more level of control
Getting a limited lens is no substitute for technique
AF difficulties may be surmount with understanding the camera setting and practice
I also got the impression Pentax is primarily a landscape shooters brand and sports/action might come second and if the was man mode of shooting other brands might be better. I had known this but was trying to find out the best body/lens combo for the family man who also likes landscape...
I am so happy with the kit, the support from this forum is unparalleled so I am keen to stay with Pentax and choose the right lenses to get the best performance in what I am shooting...which is holiday snaps in the short term but family photographs in the medium to long term, with an emphasis on really stunning photographs to be cherished and along the way develop my photography skills-- otherwise it I would just use my phone!

Hi
My first dslr was my K30 that I bought for family photogrpahs of my kids now 5 and 2. I have the 18-55 WR old style kit lens, DA 35mm 2. 4 and DA 50mm 1.8. The 35mm gets most used followed by 50mm. The kit lens is seldom used as I struggle to accept the IQ compared to primes: only used in poor weather. I use AE mode and shoot jpegs mainly.
I have upgraded to the KP. I am due to go on holiday soon to Europe. Considering to upgrade lenses but to an economical option, compact with the best AF, maybe just one walk about.
Researching on the forum my one lens to rule them all would be the DA 20-40 Ltd WR. It is very expensive £400 used (the Kp was a stretch new at £790). I have only inexpensive glass (less than £300 for both primes) , I am terrified of breaking and expensive lens or the IQ not bring up to it for family photos(used to prime IQ).
Is there are more economical option? (Sigma / Tamron / Tonika) More compact? (40mm Ltd) Better AF? (55-300 PLM) Should I consider a longer lens? (18-135) wr I have never gone more than 18-55mm.
I am really confused tbh. I have no good camera stores so all purchases will be with 'pentax faith' and done online.
Thanks for your help.

Thinking of getting this lens for family holiday photos on KP will the AF keep up with little kids? Main concern is the distortion mentioned in reviews.... Thanks for your help

Thanks guys for you comments. It is interesting to hear about the comparisons with the K30/K70. I must say I am tempted by the K70 now as ergonomics are familiar. May I ask which @gatorguy which lenses you are using and what type of shoot you are with regards to k70 please? How is the articulating screen?

Hi thanks guys for responses. Re K70 I considered it what replied me was AF and low light performance related to photographing kids. Are my assumptions correct? But you are spot on it may be an alternative here....

Hi all
I've upgradedfrom K-30 to KP, due to the former having focusing issues - leading to about50% of the shots out of focus- I did not feel repairing such a old model wouldbe worth my while. I did not want to change systems so, with 'Pentax faith'upgraded. I understood the ergonomics are very different prior to purchasing.
I hadbeen able to take over 20K shots with the K-30 without difficulty in the ergonomicsense is with small prime lenses. With the KP, ever with small lens I finddespite using various grip sizes my hands cramp after a few minutes.
I haveread people are able to adapt, accommodate and get used the different formfactor.
Myquestions is, is it just a case of getting used to or did it require adifferent grip/ technique? How long did it take?
Thecamera is still new out the box and I am considering sending it back in favourof one of the newer mirrorless options.
Thanksfor your advice, guidance and help. I have always found this forum and itsmembers to really help
