Hi Hans, Welcome to the forum, I've been a member for a couple of years, I'm a K3 owner since when it was a new model and have used a K5 in the past (not mine) having moved from Sony a few years ago. From my own experience using my old but still in excellent condition Pentax-M 28mm F2.8 lens on my K3 I'm more than happy with the results on my K3. Yes the K5 might have a slight edge with sharpness but hey still excellent.

I can tell you the Pentax Software (Digital Camera Utility 5.6.2) is not the best editing software in the world, usable in a pinch but there are better RAW editing software available. Personally I use Serif's Affinity Photo for Mac and I'm very happy with it. Lightroom is excellent too by the way .. but hey this isn't a software comparison question .. I think ..

I always shoot RAW so don't really see the out of camera Jpegs, my old Lens works as well as my newer ones on my K3 .. well that's my 2p's worth .. hope that helps :-)

Never used the AA filter, always off and I have not had any issue :-) I have had my K3 since 2013, in fact I have never thought about it.

Well done, can be tricky getting good photographs of these fellas, beautiful composition, angle and colours, not much to add other than I agree with Darylk, perhaps a crop of the top to give the main star of the show more impact.

Anyone using Affinity?

The Beta has now finished and I have now Purchased the released version for £29.99 and for the price it's worth the venture. They are very up front with the fact that they are adding improvements and functionality as they go. I use it with Aperture for the file organisation and I am happy enough so far but I haven't really used it for very long or very extensively. They have some good things coming up and I am very happy playing with what they have so far which is excellent for the price. I am not a seriously heavy user so I can't give a comparison but for Mac aperture users it's a good start if you don't want to go the PS route. Well that's my penny's worth anyway for what it's worth :-)

I have used the object removal function "inpaint" which is excellent I have to say and I'm no expert :-)

Looking forward to their up and coming improvements such as focus stacking.

computer buying advice for k3

I had this very same issue when I got my K3, well in fact it was an issue waiting to be resolved before that but budgets needed to be funded and that takes time :-( There's lot's of good advice on here but I thought I would just add my list as I have been very happy with what I now have for over a year.

Having had like you, a very very old PC and mine had a pathetic amount of RAM etc I decided I wasn't going to struggle anymore with my PC being rendered a useless piece of metal which just made noises and wasted my time.

What I have now does a very nice job thank you; I'm sure people might say you don't need all of that and they might be right but hey I am very very happy with what I have, it works and works very well, I don't spend my time fighting with technology when I just want to get a job done so this is what I now have:

Mac book pro 15inch Retina (late 2013) - This monitor can be calibrated by third party monitor calibration equipment - worth doing.
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
500 Gigabyte Solid State drive
External 3 Terabyte storage + another 1 Terabyte external drive which are synched
24'' external monitor - nothing special but will soon be replaced by a monitor that can be calibrated, those budgets again :)

This just sings along without a worry, I thought about an apple desktop but negations with my wife and the fact we don't have much space forced the laptop route but it still works well. The SSD memory is excellent, quick, robust and quiet :-) oh I do like quiet.

My only issue is that the internal 500 Gigabytes of SSD is too small for my photo collection, which in a way might be a good thing and not an issue if I wasn't so lazy, it means you need some discipline in managing your photo collections and having multiple copies of them synched for security.

As for using the cloud for my photo collection well that's just a joke the cost and performance issues make it a non starter.

Software:
Since the sad demise of Aperture's future I have been a refugee in search of a new workflow home, I shoot in RAW or RAW + Jpeg; I have procrastinated but it comes down to Lightroom or capture One or maybe the new Affinity Photo by Serif (Beta) (Mac only) .. did I say I procrastinated? I would advise getting the 30 day trials and have a proper play.

Good luck

How has the K3 worked out for you?

I have had my K3 for just over a year; I am very happy and not looking at other things currently, too busy enjoying taking photographs :) I say not looking at other things ... what I mean is other camera bodies. Lenses .. oh boy have been looking at those. Currently there are other high cost projects in the house and a new lens will not get authorised by the financial director :-/

I don't get stressed out about not having a FF but if Pentax do bring out a FF I would be telling a fib if I were to say I wasn't interested; of course it would get my attention even if I can't afford it.

BTW I had .. still have a Sony Alpha A580 which I used for a number of years but it doesn't get out much these days unless my niece is around.

Hello,

I have just joined the forum, having read many threads and reviews. Now that I have purchased my first Pentax DSLR I feel qualified to join in. I have just recently purchased a K3 and so far I'm very happy. I have been using a Sony Alpha A580 DSLR for a number of years and have got an immense amount of enjoyment from it. I hope to continue that enjoyment with my shiny new K3.

Best regards
Reggie
