Wondering where to go camera-wise (especially re: MFT)

If you are planning to switch from Olympus to another system, why not consider Nikon/Sony/Canon/Fuji instead of pentax, if you move over to sony/canon you won't have to worry about your manufacturer dying out too soon. And pentax also is not as quick as other manufacturers to come out with the latest and greatest techs in video and mirrorless, so if latest tech and improvements are what you are after you should consider switching to Nikon/Sony/Canon/Fuji as an option as well

New Pentax KP vs. used Nikon D800

You are using an AF Nikkor Lens, AF Nikkor is the first generation screw driven lenses back in the 70s lens which were terribly slow. AF-D is faster with a screw mount and all the newer AF-G Internal focus motor lens are very quick focusing. The slow focus has nothing to do with the camera but because you are using a legacy lens.

New Pentax KP vs. used Nikon D800

It is the same as the K-1 vs KP. K-1 has a much better dynamic range because it is a full frame sensor. K-1 and D800 have almost the same Dynamic Range 14.8 vs 14.6 on D800. The K-3 (same sensor as KP) only has 13.6 which is quite a big difference. (Source DXOMark sensor database) Also from my practical usage I have used K-3 and D750 and I underexpose a lot and on the Nikon get so much detail from shots which look completely black. One thing I've loved on the FF. I was never able to do that when I was using the K-3

New Pentax KP vs. used Nikon D800

I think if you are primarily a landscape shooter, the D800 would make sense because of its high MP count and you can crop more. Also dynamic range on D800 would be much better than the Pentax KP. The only reason you would want to go for the KP is for the usage of existing lenses. I had switched from Pentax K-3 to Nikon D750 and for landscape shots never miss the image stabilization, mostly because the Lens I use has VR and also I use tripod for a lot of my landscape shots. If you use a lot of manual telephoto zooms then the manual focusing on the Nikon won't be as easy as the Pentaxes, Also someone commented that ISO noise is higher for D800 but that will be the case because of the D800s larger MP, if you cropped the image to 24MP the noise would be the same/ lower.

I also shoot a lot of sunset/sunrise. So if you want to get more detail from the shadows then the dynamic range plays a big part and that one place the FF would definitely do better than the KP. I also use the 24-85 VR lens which you are planning to buy and that is a pretty good zoom lens, good sharpness overall. If you also shoot kids have you thought about the D750, it has better low light focusing and overall good for portraits as well. You'd be giving up the 36MP resolution, but everything else is good and the camera is very rugged. You can find used ones for about 700-750 on the lower end. I also had the 50 2.8 macro and definitely miss that once I moved to Nikon. Nothing equivalent in Nikon in that price range. But as you mentioned lenses in Nikon are available in plenty. I bought a 80-200 F4 Nikon Manual lens for about 50 bucks and it was one of the sharpest zoom lens you can come across good for landscape and portraits as well. Its as good as prime. As you mentioned, you have a lot of choices, but you have to decide if you want to go the Nikon or Pentax Route. It was a hard choice when I left pentax because I loved their cameras, but now that I'm using Nikon, I love their image output as well and don't really miss pentax anymore.

Pentax K-3 vs K-1

I switched from a K-3 to a Nikon full frame. Nikon full frame probably has the same capabilities as the K-1, you can even get the older Nikon D800e or D810 and get similar results as the K-1 and similar price for used ones. Dynamic Range on Nikon Full frames are really good. However if you do a lot of manual focus, Nikons are not well suited for that. You will need autofocus lenses. But Nikon is also highly backward compatible with its legacy lenses and so there are a lot of cheap and quality options available for Nikon, Besides you have more Third Party lenses as well to choose from. Plus if you plan on using external flashes/strobes, there are a lot of third party options available for Nikon/Canon/Sony for cheap (Godox). Nikon loses the in camera image stabilization. But I can't say I miss that a lot. You can't shoot below 1/60 handheld. I also got a Sony A7ii full frame, but like the Dynamic range of the Nikon much better. I have the Nikon D750. Had the D600 before than and it has the same sensor. But the sony mirrorless are lighter. I use both Nikon and Sony now because I use a lot of manual focus lenses and sony makes it very easy to use them. Sad to say, I don't own a pentax anymore. I definitely loved the brand, but love the additional benefits I get from Nikon when it comes to lens selection and lighting.

48MP cell phone sensor, does this mean a new round of DSLRs are dying articles

48 MP just an eye catcher, most photographers know there's way more about photography that just mere Megapixels. For Example D810 and D750 are 36 MP and 24 MP respectively, but most portrait crowd still prefer 24 MP because its optimal for portrait photography. Higher MP is better for landscape, however I can't imagine with the storage limitations on cellphones, how someone will be able to shoot raw and keep all their images on their cellphone especially when it has a 48 mp camera.

---------- Post added 08-31-18 at 04:26 PM ----------

I honestly think we've hit the bar for Megapixels. I don't see any need for higher Megapixels. Monitors already can't resolve the high resolution provided by 36 - 48 MP. And also for raw processing greater than 24 MP affects the image processing flow and makes it slower. Even with 45 MP cameras out still 24 MP cameras sell more, showing that we have indeed probably hit the sweet spot for resolution at least for a while.

An APS-C kit for landscape photography ?

K-3II is a great option for landscape because of the pixel shift tech which allows you to take around 46 MP super sharp photos. Pentax has good dynamic range which allows you to pull some details from the shadows. (Body cost approx 550)

Other options are Nikon D500, very expensive though (1000) (you could get a D750 or a K-1 for that price) (If you are okay with manual focus Sony A7R used is selling really cheap (700), very good dynamic range and higher resolution but lenses are expensive) Sony A6000 (300 used) as apsc is also good. Sony and Pentax have similar dynamic range)

If you have money for a full frame, I would say go for a used full frame, even the Nikon D600, or Sony A7r or the older A99 can all be had under 700 bucks for used. All these cameras have excellent dynamic range.

Thank you. It was taken in Capitol Reef National Park in Utah USA. and It has a very great dark sky and it was taken in June during the time when there was no moon. So I realized that you do need high ISO of at least 3200 to get to see the milky way that clearly. With a 16 mm lens you only get about 20 -22 second to not get any star trails

I've never used film, maybe its something I should seriously give it a try! Too bad you lost your EM10. Hopefully you can get another one. I got the Lumix because I liked its video capabilities. The 1080p is exceptionally good and apart from that now I'm liking its photo capabilities as well.

Being primarily an OVF user, now that I have an EVF camera as well, I see that I try to use it like i'm using an OVF and miss out a lot of the features that the camera itself offers because it is EVF. And so I'm trying to learn how to use EVF and if you use it in a different way as opposed to just trying to use it like you use a OVF camera, you might actually end up liking a lot of the features that it offers. But If you try to use it as an OVF or never have used an EVF, then I would say that criticizing EVF is not right because you haven't used it the right way.

Myself I use Nikon and panasonic Lumix other than pentax and I love the dynamic range of Nikon and cheaper lens availability and for Lumix I do like the m4/3 size and how I can use it for video. I just have one or 2 lenses for each of those whereas with pentax I have tons.

When will Pentax catch up to the other big makers?

Honestly I don't see a huge different myself when I used EVF vs OVF. the EVF camera's like the Lumix are pretty light and so I can look at the screen and focus, which is as good or better than focusing through the viewfinder. I sometimes find it easier to use a manual focus lens on the EVF cameras because they are lighter and therefore I can easily use focus peaking handheld, whereas for a DSLR focus peaking handheld is much harder because of the larger weight. Plus touch focusing is really helpful for videos or if you are using a weird angle and holding the camera up high etc.

The shots you took look really good. I used the samyang 16mm F2 for the milky way and I've gotten some great shots because the lens is sharp wide open at f2 and I've used it upto ISO 3200 on my K-3 and have gotten very good results.

attached a sample and it was taken at ISO 8000 on my K-3. It came out surprisingly well which I didn't expect.

While I do agree with the concerns with Pentax, the cameras are not generations behind. if anything maybe video capability wise a couple of generations behind, but not in terms of photography. Actually in terms of photography, Pentax is ahead of canon, Nikon and maybe even sony in some aspects, and when it comes to DSLRs. For me the only reason to look at other cameras is the cheaper availability of lenses, more full frame options for lenses. if I was to only stick with APS-C Pentax would easily be a top choice.

Help me choose Pentax 16-85 vs Sigma 18-35

Sigma 18-35 would be my recommendation. You can get a lot of cheap glass in the 50-100 range, but the 18-35 at 1.8 is great for low light, astrophotography. The lens is very sharp, great bokeh, can't go wrong with it. If you definitely shoot a lot of landscape or night/street photography, don't even think twice about the sigma. disclaimer, I don't own either of them, sorry!

Which lens should I use for shooting a running event?

It all depends on how far you are shooting from and if you are looking to freeze the action with the subject really popping in the photo, then a good zoom between 70-200 should be good. I would definitely use the 100mm macro WR as the main lens because it has a great bokeh, and very sharp and its a good focal length. 50-200 is not a lens with great optical qualities
