Absolutely stunning. Brilliant pics, and really interesting to read about how you did it, too. Many thanks for such a great post.

I look forward to seeing what you think of it, as I really fancy a split prism screen. I tried a quick experiment yesterday, I swapped over old SMC lenses with my very old ME Super and my K10, and the spilt prism was so superior. Couple that with the dioptre correction on the K10 and I think it's likely to be a winning formula.

K10D SR test (by myself)

Yes, a good result is very much about the technique of holding a camera steady. Therefore, it's almost impossible to produce accurate tests as you'd need to put the camera on a tripod, which would, um, kind of defeat the object. :)

I, too, can get acceptably sharp shots with a handheld 1/2 sec exposure using SR. This, IMO, is one of the great advances of photographic technology.

How to reduce high ISO noise while shooting

I'm not convinced there are "unimportant" highlights. However, I think it should be recognized that the whole issue, to a large extent, is a subjective one. There is no such thing as perfect exposure; a certain amount of sacrifice has to be accepted in order to achieve the photographic objective at the time.

I think that working in RAW is a big factor, and a small but significant amount of detail can often be recovered with a little patience and experimentation.

Ah! Now isn't that just the truth. We're all chained to the limiting factors of currently available technology. Another five years will see enormous changes, and another ten will, I suggest, be very much a different world. So all things considered, these are rather exciting times.

Oh, and if I've come across as a little bit too strongly opinionated, I apologize. ;)

1) Try not to be so cranky.
2) I read all your post (try not to be presumptuous, either)
3) With regard to your photos, because the conditions are indoors the exposure latitude is pretty narrow, so it'd be difficult to blow highlights in those lighting conditions. In the real world, however, over-exposing (which is what you're doing by increasing the exposure compensation) will almost always lead to blown highlights to some degree.
4) The only way to reduce noise is to use a low ISO, which will often mean a tripod in low light. Yes, software noise reduction (if applied skillfully) can make a big difference, but there's no magic bullet. When the sensor's gain is increased (which is what you're doing by increasing the ISO) then noise is a simple product of this process and is usually directly proportional.

And blow out your highlights? No thanks, that's not for me.

Well I've just upgraded from my K10D to a K30D, and I have to tell you, it's great. The 19.6 megapixel sensor is huge by comparison, and allows me to crop a fair bit without worrying about image quality. It's fast, too, with 5 fps in RAW (up to the capacity of the standard 32Mb SDHC card) meaning I never miss a shot. And the new fully tilting 3 inch LCD screen with Super LiveView is what the K20 should have had from the off. Low light? it's a breeze, you have no idea just how convenient it is to be able to go up to 12,800 ISO with Pentax's LoNoize system, you'd honestly think it was 100 ISO on a K10D. Boy, how things have improved, I'm so glad I waited instead of rushing to buy the K20. :)

K10D red color-cast problem

As I now exclusively shoot in RAW, I always leave the colour temp set to auto, as I can change it to exactly what I want during post-processing. It's one of the reasons I see shooting directly to JPGs as a little pointless. But with RAW, well, the world's your oyster.

I got out my old ME Super the other day and compared it to my K10. It was tiny! However, I like the chunkiness of the K10 and, for me, if size is ever a problem I use a compact. A camera the size of my ME Super still wouldn't fit in to my pocket.
