Thanks for all the input everyone.
Mattox, i can send you the dng if you like. It would be interesting to see what you get. Only if you really want to as it feels like a big favour and use of your time.
Whats the best way to send it to you?

I just tried to add dng file but the forum wont accept it.
I always shoot in raw so the pictures ive added are jpegs from dng files without any alterations to the jpeg. I thought jpegs were only lossy once you alter the jpeg.
I even tried saving multiple exposures ( multiple exposures in the field would have been better for the high contrast situation ) and combining but the result was like my first pictures in this thread.
Iam now thinking it is just the case that it was a bright day, i wasnt using a polarizer, the zoom lens and maybe how the K30 handles colour in bright situations ( dynamic range) is the main contributor to the grass looking , as i would put it, undefined.
i wasnt worried about the highlights and shadows too much as they look as expected.
No one who has responded has commented on the grasses detail or lack of clarity so it makes me confident its because of the reasons i mentioned above.
its been useful for me to have other photographers input.
thanks.

I have attached the original file and a crop of the grass section.
I hope this is what you wanted to look at.

I did have to apply highlight and shadow recovery to even out the picture. the high contrast is partly down to that and partly down to the conditions i shot in.
The lack of detail / clarity in the grass was evident when I first opened up the picture and remained no matter what lever i adjust and in whatever direction.
I will post it untouched so hopefully you can see.

Hi.
I do have lightroom.
I have tried using all the sliders that may help the situation ( black reduction, dark area reduction, highlights and shadows).
The jpeg i attached was uncropped.
I can reattach a jpeg untouched but how can i attach it in a large size.
Thanks

Hello.
I have taken some picture recently of a field on a bright sunny late afternoon (not middle of the day).
The picture is attached.
My query is this: When I look at the grass there seems to be a lack of detail/ clarity and if this is to do with not using a polarizer filter in the middle of the day . I know that a polarizer would have cut out certain reflections so to enhanced or help detail come through in hi contrast environments and help the colour.
If you zoom in you can see what I mean. The apature is set to F10 and the shutter speed is 205 of a second for 37mm, iso 320.
I would appreciate feedback on your thoughts to see if anyone is seeing the same thing as me and can guide me towards anything Iam missing.
Thanks.
R J P. ---------- Post added 07-18-15 at 05:50 PM ---------- By the way I havnt enhanced any colours in post processing. I thought they look saturated.
I use a Pentax K30 with 18 - 250mm Sigma DC.

I use a k 30. It gives me the option of shot in RAW or JPEG.
So i chose RAW. So it must be raw as lightroom asks to convert. Thats all i know.
Ill take the advice about the profiles with me and have a think.
thanks for all the input guys and gals.

Thanks for the link. Looks useful.
Its just a shame you cant try one photo as a trial before paying.
R J P ---------- Post added 06-27-15 at 07:30 PM ---------- When i say raw i mean whatever interpritation my camera uses, so if a k30 is dng and when i import to lightroom it asks to convert to dng, then i do that.
Dosnt waste any time as i would have to import anyway.
when i say most natural i mean as close to the raw (dng) file from the camera as possible without lightrooms interference. Iam aware that a raw file is the unprocessed file and is different to a jpeg.
I like both but the embedded is slightly flatter. Its just that i read that embedded was for jpegs and normally the camera profile section on lightroom has options for different cameras. It must be that they didnt bother for pentax k30.
Thanks.

Hi.
I have read many forums on this subject without getting a definitive answer.
Lightroom only gives me the option of adobe standard or embedded.
I take raw only files and convert to dng.
Which is the most faithful to raw file profile. Iam interested in using the most natural settings and not ones lightroom pre-determins.
I have played around and the only difference i could see was less contrast in the embedded setting but no qaulity of file loss.
Is there one i "should" be using or does not really matter.
Thanks

I did try capture one and did like it a lot but it simply comes down to price for me at my stage of photography.
The problem i have with the cloud service is that every year you have to pay around £100 a year.
.i understand getting updates and think that is a good thing but i am happy to pay a one of price of £100 and then get a newer version a couple of years later, for now.
I do wonder if there is a difference between the library on lightroom and having a good organised folder system on a computer, or am i missing something?

Hey.
Ive been looking on the internet for an official release date for lightroom 6 but cant see a official date.
Does anyone have any idea of when it might be out?
I dont want to subscribe as it would mean paying around £100 every year when I am happy to pay for the license in one hit and then wait for the next release after that.

Thanks everyone.
I tried the PNG and it didnt work but tried resizing the JPEG and it worked perfectly. It now looks smooth as the windows image viewer.
Really appreciate the input.

Hi.
I am trialing Capture one editing software and was experimenting with the highlight and shadows sliders as the picture was underexposed.
After viewing on windows image viewer everything looks good.
Viewing it on my desktop there seems to be some noise.
Can anyone explain why noise would show up more on the desktop version as the JPEG looks smooth
Thanks.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. It has helped in my understanding what is going on.
I had read up on the influence different software has on the appearance of raw and dng files but as I am trying the buy software that works best for me I wanted to make the right choice and couldnt understand why so many people raved on about Lightroom when it was appearing to give less than satisfactory results. After what everyone has said here I am more confident in making a chioce.
I have been using Capture one's trial version for a month now and really like it.
Can anyone confirm if the layering in Capture one is basically the same as Lightrooms gradiant filter?

The tiff i opened in lightroom was unprocessed, e.g saved straight from opening in silkypix with nothing changed.
I know working with raw/ dng is the best method but couldnt understand why the unprocessed tiff would be clearer. It could be that its gone through silkypix

Hey everyone
Ive been using the trial version of Lightroom for about 3 weeks now and also Capture one.
I thought I had resolved any issues I may have had with Lightroom (colour management was the last one) but now I discovered after reading about workflows that importing a tiff file into processing software would be benficial.
So I tried it and after doing a comparison in Lightroom (X/Y) discovered that a tiff taken from Silkypix was clearer (had better detail at 100%) than the DNG in Lightroom, when imported into Lightroom. In the image below the Tiff is on the right. As you can see it has clearer detail.
Have you got any experience or explanations as to why this might be. Is it just because I have not applied any sharpening to the DNG yet?
I only concerned myself with this as comparing Lightroom to Silkypix, Lightroom pictures looked softer and it bothered me as Lightroom seemed so good in every other aspect of post processing.
Thanks.
Robert Perrie.

Hi
I have recently stumbled across an old flash that my wife used to use on a film camera.
I thought I would try it out on my Pentax K30 and it sems to be working fine.
I just want to check if it is actually a good idea to be using this flash wth my digital SLR. In other words will it mess up my camera after a certain amount of time of using the two together.
Thanks
Rob.

Ive attached some pictures i took. IMGP81895 is f6.3 / 180mm IMGP819030 is f18 / 180mm IMGP81871 is f3.5 / 18mm IMGP818825 is f18 / 18mm.
I focused on the silver clip in all the photos. The 18mm photos are not sharp at that point but the 180mm hotos are sharp at that point.
I have looked into AF fine adjustment but have not tried it yet.
My camera is a K30, by the way.
Thanks
