What's your favourite vintage / film-era manual focus lens, and why?

I love this thread.
I have lba for Pentax k and m series lenses mainly.

Any of the Pentax k lenses would be my favourite. But I'll pick the k28 f3.5. This lens absolutely rocks on the a7r3.

I have to mention the k20 f4 which doesn't get the praise that it deserves.

Pentax gets praise for making the tiny m20f4.

The m50 and 100 f4 macro lenses are also superb with ff digital.

I feel as though a I am with friends in this thread. Photographers who appreciate the character of the old lenses and who are not obsessed with corner sharpness ( how did we get to the stage where sharpness drives the Market?)

I use these lenses preferentially to the modern auto focus lenses that have cost me a fortune. I would be interested to know how many forum members do the same.

I have both the m20 and k20. I have reviewed both on this forum.

If you are using mirror less, the sensor stack thickness reduces the sharpness of the peripheral 10%.

The m20 is truly pocketable and does produce lovely colours, vibrancy and contrast. Very sharp from f5.6 in centre two thirds.

The k20 is a lovely old lens. Beautiful handling and long focus throw. Wins on iq. It is my favourite ultra wide angle lens.

My favourite three lenses for the a7r3 are the k20f4, k28f3.5 and m50 1.7

The modern auto focus lenses stay at home in their boxes.

With legacy lenses you can produce images with their own character and therefore stand out from the “modern” crowd.

Pentax A 35-105 for my Sony a7r3.
Mint condition.
Ibis in the camera.
This lens rocks on this camera.
How did they make those lenses back then that are so optically good and with such a build quality that lasts a lifetime?

Has anyone noticed any differences in K-mount between bodies?

Hi,

I have noticed an anomaly in the mount on a lens.

I have 15 k,m and a series lenses, all in mint condition.

All but one, (k 50 1.2) fit perfectly on a novoflex adapter for my Sony a7r.

Thankfully the seller of the troublesome lens included another adapter that works fine.

On inspection, there is no wear or distortion of the mount.

I cannot explain the anomaly.

Regards and happy new year

I agree. It is all about enjoyment. If you think that you are going to enjoy jumping to the FF format, if you have the money to do so, if you wish to resurrect your FF lenses from the film era, if you have the patience for the added attention to technical detail required when using the FF system and if you want to own the latest technology for a while then go for it and enjoy the whole experience.
Will you notice a significant difference in the end product on a computer screen? No. Will you notice a significant difference at A2, probably not (I have done comparisons between sony a7r (36mp) with pentax k28 and sony Rx100 mk3 (20 MP 1 inch sensor) at A2 and can"t spot any significant difference).
So for those pentaxians in the northern hemisphere, spring has sprung and summer will be upon us so get out there and get shooting!!

I agree totally. That is why i only use manual lenses with distance scales on my a7r and with the focus set at the hyperfocal distance. The shallow dof was the biggest shock for me when i upgraded to a ff system.

I think, you and others wishing to use legacy glass should bring the lenses to your local friendly camera outlet and spend a considerable time trying them out on the K1 before you part with your heard earned cash!!!!

The spec states that there is a bleep when the manual lens has focused successfully with the central af point. One has to specify the focal length in the menu.
I am guessing that this will work well with the pentax legacy lenses. There is no way that pentax would develop their first FF camera without this fuction working well as they are well aware of the large inventory of legacy glass that is out there and that a significant number of cameras will be sold to those whose prime purpose is to re use their much loved lenses from the film era.
Manual focusing on the sony a7r is a joy but is an evf obviously.

The narrower DoF was the most difficult issue for me to manage when i jumped from m4/3 to FF (sony a7r) a couple of years ago.
Suddenly those flowers in the foreground weren't in focus every time I shot landscapes at F8 whilst auto focused somewhere into the distance or at infinity.
For the first time since my film days hyperfocal distance became a major issue again.
Armed with hyperfocal charts I set off into the deep blue yonder and my automatic lenses with no focus scales on them. Still no reliable results.
Then, I tried checking the accuracy the digital distance scale in the viewfinder whilst using my expensive sony zeiss lenses. Totally inaccurate.
Autofocus a third of the way into the scene at f8 and use live view to check the DoF, the internet suggested. Difficult to do, fiddly, time consuming and unreliable.
Then, I resorted to my much cherished collection of pentax k and pentax m lenses. Fully manual with hyperfocal distance scales. Relief! The flowers are back in focus!

The point of this post is to highlight to landscape photographers the need to be fastidious about the hyperfocal distance when using FF. They may find themselves drawn back to manual lenses for that reason until manufacturers address this issue, either as of old with a scale on the lens or innovatively with a digital hyperfocal button that automatically and accurately focuses the lens at the correct distance.

I predicted that the demand for the manual pentax legacy glass would increase once pentax released their first FF camera. I will watch the second hand websites with interest!!

Agree totally. Even the 24's could be good on the k1 depending on sensor thickness/nuances etc.

Loads of threads on pentax legacy glass and the sony a7 series.

To sum up:

Excellent: k28 f3.5 k35 f3.5 k55 f1.8 k85 f1.8 m50 f1.7 m100 f3.5 macro
Very good m35 f2.8 m35-70 f2.8-3.5 m80-200 f4.5
Very good for landscapes m20 f4 but too much distortion for architecture
Good m135 f3.5 and very compact

I am looking forward to purchasing the body for use with these lenses.
Yes they are not going to resolve as well as more modern glass but their colour rendition is wonderful and they are a joy to own and use.

Many thanks for your comparison. Your pictures are great.
I only posted them to give those thinking of upgrading to a high pixel ff system an idea of the detail that can be retained with a significant crop. Also to show what a great job that these wonderful 40 year old lenses can still do in a modern world.
I wouldn't advocate going on a wildlife trip armed with a 35mm lens. But for those, like myself, who are more landscape orientated, it is a useful tool to be able to crop a picture of unexpected fauna / flora/ bird/ wildlife and retain a level of detail that is reasonable enough for a photobook.
The bluetit was photographed in winter with the k35 f3.5. The robin was photographed in spring with a mft system (lumix g3 (16mp) with 200-600 equivalent zoom at 600mm.
I still think that the crop is still pretty good for what it is!!!

These are crops from the a7r. The birds were taken with the K85 1.8 and k35 3.5 and the bees with the m100 f4 macro.
Does one really need huge cumbersome long lenses for wildlife when they there is such an ability to crop and retain detail??
I can only imagine the resolution from the 42 and 50 MP sensors

The k28 f3.5 is my favourite lens, period!!
I agree totally with silver-surfer. The legacy glass also looks great on the a7r, particularly the m20 f4 and m50 f1.7 because they are so small.

Maybe one needs to have silver hair or be totally bald, as in my case, to be of an age to appreciate the nostalgia and emulation of the old k and m series film slr systems that the a7r provides.

I was intimating about future musculo skeletal issues that could ensue from having a heavy camera around one's neck and heavy bag over one's shoulder.
I don't really want to spend £5500 on a rotator cuff repair and be out of action for 6 months!!!

---------- Post added 09-01-15 at 09:11 PM ----------

There are plenty of threads / tests showing that some of the pentax legacy primes more than hold their own on the 36 mp ff sensor.
The 28mm shoot out on the fred miranda site is an excellent read.
I have no issues in taking the m20 f4 (landscapes only), k28 f3.5 and k35 f3.5 in preference to the sony fe 16-35. Lighter around the neck, more fun to use, manual focusing a joy especially for hf distance etc and great to have a manual aperture ring.
The a2 prints are excellent and i prefer the colour rendition of the legacy glass.
