Your image has very little information in it---very few details or color. I would expect the export to be small.

Ball Head or 3 Way Pan/Tilt Head

I definitely prefer....both.

For travel my go-to heads are Acratech. Some years ago DPR did a test and found that (at that time) the Acratech held better than others. This has been my experience, using a 645Z) and I have 2 of them (great deal on a used one, then got the other which had better features for me). They are lighter than other heads with the same holding power/weight rating.

But for most of my pro work I use a geared head, the heavier sibling of pan-tilts. Very precise movements are possible with ease, which is not something that can be said for ball heads, which can be precisely adjusted but not with ease (but YMMV applies).

I have had the opposite experience in low light, indoor situations, with both the 645Z and the K1mkII. What am I doing...wrong? They're not quick like Canon---but they're quick enough and more sure in my experience than the 5DmkIV I have worked with side by side with the Pentax cameras.

I have always been a bit mystified by people having difficulties with Pentax in general photography situations. I've never had these problems. Now, I don't do BIF or sports (like soccer, etc...). Indeed, if that was my bag I'd probably use a different system because Pentax is probably a step behind (although we have motor sports shooters here who seem to do quite well....). But for general purpose imaging I don't see the problem with Pentax in my experience---which includes shooting side by side with a 5DmkIV in lower light. Oh, indeed the Canon was quicker...and often wrong. From that shoot the usable images all came from my Pentax.

I daresay a lot of this has to do with the user and getting the camera dialed in.

[LIST][*]
Point(s) of order:
  • The Sony is not a lousy little camera.

  • The Nikon's were not ever intended to chase toddlers

  • Focus point "right on the edge of the frame" is ....an odd need.

  • "Modern capabilities"---I rather think it's horses for courses. I haven't any need for the things you seem to---and that doesn't mean I'm going to try to convince you to get a 645Z.

A Pentax fullframe DSLR I want to see (and have)

I'm not sure the suggestions above would substantially reduce the weight/bulk enough to make that big a difference. I travel with my 645Z with no issues! If it's small you want, then go Sony. But beware: a camera can be too small. It's one thing if it's a limited body camera with fewer buttons and options, it's another to have the same functionality and haptics/ergonomics.

I just want to see Pentax come out with a K1mkIII that has some of the goodies the K3mkIII has, which includes much better video. I also want to see a K1 series monochrome camera. That I would buy right away; the color version would need to offer some substantial upgrades to my K1mkII.

I also would like to see Pentax come out with a FF fixed lens pocketable camera with an integral viewfinder. That's what I'd have with me all the time. And I'd do a deal with the devil for a medium format one!

I think it's idle to speculate on what a professional system might be---no intent here to insult any of the commenters above---because there are so many types of professional photographers and their needs can wildly diverge. Even in the different subsets---let's say event photography for one---there are different needs: a wedding pro might not need the same lens set as a concert photographer, for instance. And more just between those 2.

What's your goal, actually? Memories? Art? Landscape?, Wildlife?

If it's art and landscape, take the K1 and the 28-105 plus another prime (according to your personal vision).

If it's memories and wildlife then take the K3III and 2 zooms, one weighted wide and one weighted long (I don't shoot apsc so I can't advise exactly which ones).

If it's all of the above then all of that, but make a decision for the day and only deploy that kit. Or, get yourself a much better bag/pack that makes a heavier lod ride like a lighter one. A really good bag makes ALL the difference in the world.

Also: do a heckuva lot of research on the parks you're going to. Some have easy wildlife shooting and in some it's really the landscape that shines. Know before you go. BTW, also really pay attention to when to go---weather, crowds, etc. Crowding in the summer makes some parks almost impossible, and weather can really impact your visit in others.

^^^^THIS^^^^.

I Have shot both. Mirrorless is great. I shoot with DSLR's. One reason is that they give you the choice of shooting optically or with the LCD. If I was a heavy video person, then I'd definitely be leaning towards mirrorless. Until i am, I'll go with Pentax.

Exactly so. Pentax can survive and continue as a niche maker. One of the best things that has happened for it is for Nikon and Canon to drop out of DSLRs.

Seems you are set up with tele---which is a good thing as tele for landscape is underutilized---everyone thinks wide but lots of times you get better looking shots from lenses that aren't wide---wide angles can diminish impressive scenes sometimes. Probably what you have is fine.

When i went to the Galapagos I was shocked how close you could get to the birds, basically you could just kneel down a take a shot from minimum focus distance---tele lenses were largely useless (i don't photograph birds). Only one time would one have been useful: when we spotted a rare owl which was quite shy. The tele was handy shooting from the boats, though.

I prefer DSLR's because they are the best of both worlds: you've got the OVF, AND you've got live view. I use it all the time for critical focus checking before and after the shot. Nearly all of my important work is off a tripod. My dream is to get better tethering so I can have a much larger screen to wok from. Like 8x10. No issues with a tripod. but right now it's way too clunky in the field---only practical in the studio.

Upgrading from K-3ii to K-1

I don't think any of us can answer your question precisely because we don't know how exacting you are with respect to image quality. Certainly the best lenses get the most out of the K1, but "perfect is the enemy of the good" as they say. There are lots and lots of fine Pentax lenses for FF on the used market, and several that are modestly priced new---the 28-105 is a very good example that is an excellent lens.

If you aren't printing larger and not cropping a lot, then the gains you will see from the K1 will mostly be tonality gains---and in my experience the average viewer won't be able to see that. It may be that you have to look hard as well! But I know that in my case once I saw the differences (between 4/3 and FF, and between FF and medium format) I couldn't "unsee" them. But this is esoteric stuff. The K3II is already a very capable apsc camera and should have been giving you very nice image quality. The K1 should also give you better high iso performance if that's something you need.

If you hope to print large, then you should get the K1. But I think 1000 euros seems slightly high for a used K1unless there's a warranty involved. You might want to look a little harder.

Welcome! Kudos to you for making the new banner. Glad you are finding the Pentax experience a positive one.

FYI, I did a bunch of work several years ago at The Broad for 2 sessions of 3 weeks' each. There in the shop i bought a set of manhattan style whisky glasses made by a female coop. Two were slightly gold colored and said "SUN" in gold block letters, and the other two were slightly smoky colorwed and said "SMOG". Had to have 'em!

I tested the Sony A7R IV

I'll chime in here (I actually started reading this as a mod looking for mischief in the responses) because some of my experiences with my old Sony A7R mirrored the OP's. First, I was in Sony before it went mirrorless, when everyone was bemoaning the "loss" of Konica/Minolta. The Sony A850 was my first FF digital camera, and I mainly found it wonderful. Same with the A7R---saw it and handled it first at Photo Expo in NYC when it was first being released. I thought it was wonderfully solid and the Sony people were justifiably proud of it and really engaged with all of us checking out these new cameras---what a contrast to the slightly bored reps at both the Canon and Nikon booths. So I did indeed get one at full retail, just as I had the NEX 7. it turned out to be a miscalculation for me, but more on that in a bit.

With respect to menus: I hate them all, and so for me it's all equal. But that's ok, because my shooting just doesn't require a lot of menu diving---I set stuff and then forget about it. My ideal menu system would be user programmable/modifiable.

Sony cameras in my experience a quite well built. I have no issues there.

I had no problems per se with the A7R's EVF, and there were some things that I found startlingly useful, mostly it's utility as a "night vision" device, which is very helpful to me in some of my common shooting situations. I also much preferred Sony's better implemented focus peaking---choice of colors!

But the miscalculation I made in my purchase was 2-fold. The first was that i thought I wanted a smaller body. Turns out that's really not right for me---or, more precisely that many mirrorless cameras occupy an awkward middle between well sized ergonomically and actually truly small. I'd be happy to put up with the worse ergonomics of a truly small, coat-pocketable camera for its with-me-all-the-time size (as long as it's FF or above...), but for "set-to" shooting situations the bigger cameras a better for me. The second "miscalculation" I couldn't have foreseen, which was the release of the 645Z. Once I bit the bullet for that then the A7R saw little use, and so i traded it in when the K1 came out---because it's also a pain in my noggin to deal with 2 different camera systems.

Finally the whole EVF-OVF thing. Part of me doesn't get this dichotomy, because with live view on a DSLR you have both, while as with mirrorless you only have an electronic view. If I shot more from the hip I could see the point in low light situations having the eyepiece being an EVF, but in low light I'm almost always using a tripod and composing, so the lcd screen works well, and an articulated one works best.

So, that's how it works for me. The only right answer about this is what works best for the user. All the sturm und drang about this topic is just the narcissism of small differences IMO
