645Z + FA 645 55mm: Sharpest f-stop at f8 or stop down? Hyperfocal issues....

Mr. Merklinger gets a bit wordy but essentially he says focus at infinity and stop down. The stopping down part is where he gets wordy and technical. Maybe skip the article and just try it. I'll recommend it to anyone using the 1/3 alternative to try this instead.

"Upgrading" decision, Pentax 645Z or Nikon D850(810)

No doubt the D850 is one heck of a FF camera. You'll get more resolution and DR out of the Pentax. Keep in mind you would be working with a 3:2 aspect ratio. I saw a review where someone claimed the D850 is the best wildlife camera they've ever shot. Ignoring the hyperbole for a minute, the D850 is a versatile machine. You would have hundreds of lenses, new and old, to choose from.

645Z owners: Will you switch to a Sony 75MP A7RIII?

I wasn't suggesting a direct causal effect but there is an indirect effect. Stopping down has pros and cons. The pro for landscape being that stopping down brings objects into focus (including edges and corners rendered out of focus by lens aberrations) but stopping down can also bring on diffraction. If one's composition has no close objects and the only reason to stop down is to fix out of focus corners and edges, then a better designed (and more expensive ) lens would eliminate this need and as an extra benefit, avoid possible diffraction issues.

Switch? No.
Add to kit? Yep.

I might trade my 645z for a 100 MP version.

645Z and Capture One

I've spent many years figuring out ACR & PS (and probably still have many years left to go :) ). At this stage, I firmly believe that neither Capture One or any other conversion/editing software offers anything that cannot be done with Adobe coupled with the proper training/experience/decent files to work with/professional monitors & calibration. I get tempted to try other software from time to time but the effort I have already invested in PS/ACR makes considering other software a daunting proposition. I looked at Lightroom once and thought "what in the hell"? :)

What I want to know is if Adobe has Phase One profiles.

I never thought the sample images Pentax distributed from the 25 were very compelling. Here's one.

I am happy with the 28-45. I bought a 5DsR to cover the 11-24 range (on the list to purchase) and the 150-600 range. The 645z will be the meat of the sandwich.

OTOH, Thomas Brown does pretty well with the lens.

Why f:4.5 rather than f:2.8 in "studio zooms"?

To Stevebrot.

I see my writing mistake. I failed to qualify "users of the 35mm format". I should have said "some" users of the 35mm format, I was certainly thinking "some", or perhaps even "many", but obviously not "all". But, I do not know why equivalence would not be of interest to users of the 645 sensor/film size if and when they consider purchasing legacy 645 lenses (since the 645z is a cropped 645) or adapting 67 lenses. After purchasing a given lens for the system, during use, I do not think in terms of "I am currently shooting an equivalent 21mm with a 28mm 645 lens." I am thinking about what is framed in the VF. This is where I agree with you. Equivalence is gone from my mind.

Is diffraction killing your 645Z images?

SeattleDucks, thanks for the image.

Coincidentally, I have removed two major sharpening steps (the 2nd one just this week) since getting the 645z as being more destructive than helpful to my Pentax images. The last few images I have processed received only a modest wide radius treatment (amount 9) for contrast and Bicubic Sharper (if you can call this sharpening). No sharpening in ACR.

Deconvolution sharpening (formerly known as capture sharpening perhaps coined in Bruce Fraser's book, first edition) provides only a visible difference in the size image I use viewing at about 3 inches (no hyperbole) vs. the method above. The work involved in optimizing the capture/deconvolution sharpening for each image for this small difference may not be effort-effective for many, images printed at 54" notwithstanding. :) Have you determined your settings above as a default LR?

Regarding diffraction, I've seen some apertures mentioned in this thread in conjunction with nameless lenses that I'd like to get more info on. Although I use f16 without trepidation, I haven't noticed that I need to stop down for any reason other than DoF purposes with the lenses I own, 28-45, 55 (kit lens), 120 A, 200 FA & 45-85 FA. Maybe I haven't been observant enough. Using the Cambridge in Colour diffraction calculator and putting in enough pixels to produce a 5.3um pixel size matching the 645z pixel size per the suggestions of the members there, it appears that f11 is not diffraction limited whereas f16 is. This doesn't mean that diffraction isn't present at f11 or f8 but again, it's all of that work....

I noticed a trio of iconic images hanging in your living room/den. If only I was allowed to hang photos. :) My gal, the decorator, believes in more traditional art objects. :)

Sensor resolution that makes sense on FF and cost

The term resolution has been perverted to mean "printing large". But, think about what resolving detail actually means. Resolution on the sensor captures finer detail with more clarity. A person's decision to use that resolution is a personal choice. We don't argue against resolution when we are talking about lenses.

All of the negative sides mentioned above are mostly considerations unrelated to photography or are concerned with the avoidance of good practices.

Higher sensor resolution will benefit images shot any lens except maybe the worse of the worse and I hear Pentax doesn't make bad lenses.. Viewing a 50 MP image at 100% may highlight a lens' flaws if those flaws were heretofore unknown to the shooter.

Most 50 MP FF cameras should come with a crop feature allowing smaller images.
