I have occasional use for a torch for heating/cutting but otherwise a MIG would be my choice. With the frequency of use you would probably be a bit annoyed with needing the argon/carbon bottle kicking around. Do your research on the welder, pick a MIG that has a proven track record. Mine is a earlier model that works great when it gives me the wire, but doesn't always want to play nice with the feed. Next larger job I have for it I will probably replace it 'cause of the feed, not for the rest of its performance.

This caused a wonder moment, at least based on my interpretation of what I heard when I read the post. If one just uses the camera's sensor cleaning function where is that dust going? Isn't the potential there for it to just reappear? I've only used my cleaning function a couple times and both times ended up pulling out my sensor cleaning kit anyhow.
A nice function to go with the preview where it flashes the highlights would be one where it flashes dust on the sensor. It's a drag after a day of shooting to find that very early on you got dusted, and don't pick it out on the lcd.

I have smacked 3 cell phones death on the belt and not toasted even a filter on a lens when slung on my neck. I am much more cognizant of the camera's presence when on my neck than my phone on my hip however.

With my experience I needed as many batteries as I could muster with my SF-1 in temperate weather let alone cool to colder. That was a power hungry devil. Sorta like putting regular AA's in the earlier digital point N shoots - you'd only get equivalent to 2-3 rolls of film. I'm always greatfull to BC Ferries 'waving' a slow and hideous demise to my SF-1 - It got me the far nicer Z-1p. Do you find your SF-1 is power hungry? I switched to a AA battery door and got better results than with the original battery (?lithium?) it was designed for. Or at least got similar results with significantly less money invested for the power.

Now to wait and see if you update us in a month or two.
I have several different nail polish colours with my tools and white out too. I've had good success with those as others have mentioned and find them to be readily available and cheap, and if I run out of fun colours I can always raid my wife's collection :p

Don't know 'bout the photog suppliers he had to deal with but I know in other businesses his supplier would have honoured the pre 4/1 pricing. Sounds to me like you'd want to let him know that you will be letting others know of his stance, and then write a letter to the editor. Unless you are going there for used stuff you can probably find what you're after from somebody that wants your business.

I wondered what had happened to this one. When it was originally anounced it was for a fall 08 release, but that time has come and gone. Can't say I'm overly thrilled with the book, but am curious to see what they do and the reaction it gets before I decide to go and or take any of my kids, or if we just wait for it to hit the shelves.

So is that jealousy or what? It's also the reason for the need to coin the word Grow-op. And is has given some municipalities the incentive to overstep their bounds for 'safety inspections' that result in completely innocent people without even a trace or hint of ever having a grow-op in the past, being inspected and then billed $5000. because their home was poorly insulated and was being heated by portable electric heaters creating a higher than normal electric bill which could only ever mean a grow-op.

This is one of the few places that I use my expo disc. If it is like most school gyms 70 may be on the too tele side of the equation for action right in front/under (of) the basket, but if you can slide back a bit 70 shouldn't be too bad. In those school or local community gyms I've even found 50 on the tele side at least with the 1.5X crop factor, for some shots. Some of those gyms really underscore 'in your face' playing.

I'll jump in late with a comment on one of the other comments. Nice shots by the way. "A bit cool" before sunrise can be a bit of an understatement I was up there end of May a couple times, a few years ago, only to realize there is such a thing as freezing in Hawaii. I don't know how far down it actually got but it was below freezing when we arrived about 40-20 minutes before sunrise. Of course it didn't take too long before we were back to t-shirts once that sun was up. I guess that is my comment for any that have not yet experienced it - believe people when they say dress warm for the sunrise up there.

hmm go figure
I thought I had failing dials on my body and was going to have to send it in. Without really coming to terms with it or diagnosing the problem, I still think my grip was off a couple times, but atleast next time it happens I'll pay closer attention to the grip to confirm.
It's not much different than a 3-way switch in a house (2 switches controlling a light), if one is set to that just right 1/2 way spot the other one won't turn the light on or off.

onOne makes a Photoshop Plugin - FocalPoint. It lets you create your own 'lensbaby' image out of any image you want, or shouldn't. The nice thing about that is your field kit stays the same weight, and you don't have to swap out glass when you want a 'normal' shot.

If you live close to the 'line' you may find there is a business that will receive shipments for you. Depending on the value or how big it is it may be faster or more economical to get it shipped to the boarder and drive across and bring it home yourself. I've done that for items that were $75 to the boarder town and $650 (not counting any additional duties, taxes or even more brokerage fees) to me, 45 mins further.
I don't know if I'd do it for a single small parcel.
For any Lower Mainland readers - Ship Happens in Sumas is one such business.
(and no I don't get any $ or perks for that plug)

When it comes to cable specs one can often push the envelope a bit. I have not really tested the USB 16 ish limit, but have pushed others. I do a lot of multi media presenttions and have consitently pushed a clean 1024 X 768 image down a 130' of cable without an amplifier with no noticable difference when plugging in an amp. Supposedly I'm pushing the envelope at 30'. For USB I have a 4 port hub that can go 300' with cat 5.

Can't really help, but from my interpretation, stock would seem to yield the customer a 'fair' price but might leave the photographer short. Maybe some trolling or looking where commercial photographers may hang out. Maybe you know somebody at a large company or corporation that has a marketing dept that hires photogs. Maybe you could get in touch with somebody at BC Hydro, Teresen, BC Housing or CMHC. I used to know somebody at Teresen that was the 'client' for this sorta thing but I can't find her card anymore sorry.

Please don't make me laugh so hard when I'm eating. That whole coke back up the nose thing and all... The first half of that statement is positively hilarious. For web viewing I understand wanting to drop down even lower for web viewing but when many here are dealing with 10 megs per image....
If your images have fine detail that you feel is important to be web viewed you may be disappointed if you go significantly lower. You may also find that 100-150 K will yield results that fit YOUR deisres. Best of luck and thanks for the chuckle.

I thought I lucked out last Thurs. with my 50 1.4 until I turned it on. Then my meter suggested I'd yield something far more usable at ISO800 rather than the 400 I thought I might get away with, and that was the bright spot in the place.
Why not set the ISO range higher for those sorts of environments?

I think the beef is not being able to do 30 sec but not able to dial in a set time beyond 2 sec. To get your 30 sec exposure you had to hold the button and time the 30 sec.
You use a TS (tip sleeve) jack and one button. My understanding is that will only trip the shutter, and to get the focusing action a remote made with a TRS (tip ring sleeve or 'stereo') jack and second switch will get that pre focus ability???

Can not stress enough the point about avoiding UPS. Not only have I been charged like it was precious cargo for stuff, I've had experience where snail mail has shipped faster than them, and when one charged me $35 and the other $4, you can see why I now avoid UPS. Won't even deal with a company that will only ship to Canada via UPS.
If you are in Vancouver or the Fraser Valley, there is also a business in Sumas that will receive your goods. Ship Happens. I recently had a large parcel shipped there because the cheapest quote we could find to get the parcel over the big wall, the border was $750, and to get to Sumas was $150. The company charged me $6 to receive it. You still have to pay GST and PST when you bring it across the line but I saved on shipping and brokerage.

QT had this functionality what seems like 10 years ago. It took some other tools besides just QT, but that'd be where I'd start looking for that kind of project.
I remember looking at a whole downtown city block by block several years back done as QTVR's with hotspots, sounds, panning, the works.

A few years back, and maybe still, people that were into QTVR's did a world event on New Years Day. I saw VR's from every continent including the Antarctic camp. I've seen others done on June 21st ish and other non-equinox days. Perhaps the first day of spring would have been good, but given the timing, I'd say if we want one now let's stick with April 1st or March 30th (for a weekend day).

One of my kids once found one in our yard and put it in a jar for 'show & tell' the next morning. The next morning comes and we still have the snake in there, but now it has the company of about 8 babies. It made the 'show & tell' much cooler.
