The images are really not that bad considering your setup. I am not sure you will see much improvement by upgrading to a wireless security camera.

You may also consider another USB extension if you need more freedom of movement, but make sure they are high quality cables so you don't increase the image distortion/lag.

Seems to be a bit more complicated than I first thought... What are the settings for image capture?

Not a problem!

Just out of curiosity, do you know what the resolution is of the current cam, the Logitech Pro 9000? Is that the PC Webcam model?

If that is it, you will be downgrading from 720HD (1280x720) to 640x480...

Besides, that webcam has a Carl Zeiss lens system!

I am not familiar with NetCam line, but if that is your price range, then I would say it was a fair deal. I haven't seen any terrible products from Belkin that were made for moderate home use, so I am wiling to bet this will be no different.

The setup can be the deal breaker here. While I am sure it can be setup with a PC, it may be more of a hassle than you are willing to go through. The smart phones are actually just connecting to the camera via WiFi (it has it's own network) then telling the camera how to connect to your home WiFi. Any Laptop should be able to connect to it, unless there is a password/encryption sequence that is only available to be deciphered through the NetCam apps...

Anyways - For your described needs, I would suggest looking at a few other models that are comparable to the one you showed, such as:

TRENDnet IP751WIC - same 640x480 resolution (non-HD)...

Lorex LDC7708B Weatherproof Dome Security Camera With Night Vision - 700TVL/960H resolution (roughly the same as 640x480), weatherproof...

D-Link Wireless Day/Night Network Surveillance Camera + Wi-Fi Extender (DCS-933L) - 640x480 resolution + WiFi repeater...

All are cheaper than the one you mentioned (when buying from Amazon).

Just to clarify, are you looking for wireless connectivity with a wired electrical supply?

With this be an outdoor or indoor mount?

Record Menu Settings -

Please update to reflect the lack of the Electronic Level Display on the K-500.

Instead, users can change the grid display to the cross-hair pattern via Record Menu page 4 > Live View > Grid Display > Display #3. In this view, you can utilize the horizontal and vertical grid lines to align your shot with the horizon/subject.

Nothing to apologize for IMO, that is the type of discussion/input I was looking for. It may have been brought on by the article about food, but I think this covers all aspects of photography.

You may want to go ahead and copyright that one... :D

Dang, do those really sound like homework questions? And is that a good or bad thing? lol

@jamarley - I completely understand what you are saying, but isn't there a time and place for different types and styles of photography? I don't imagine anyone stages and works hours on touching up photos from family reunions, holiday gatherings at grandma's house and so forth, but for professional sessions like weddings or the advertising styles talked about here, wouldn't you consider staging and post-processing a part of the job? You are trying to produce the best image possible after all.

@narual - I think we are both on the same page here. I have known many companies who lure you in with 'pretty pictures' and demonstrations that appear more appealing than the actual product; however, it is not necessarily false advertising when the functionality and message are the same, right? Expectations vs reality in a way...

I don't know, maybe this article just rubbed me the wrong way. I almost took at it as a stab towards the photographers for producing quality and realistic images, even if they specifically called out "advertisers" instead of the photographers themselves. I have met a lot of marketing and advertising professionals that can dream up ideas, but it is always the photographer who puts it into effect and provides that final product.

On an unrelated note, is it normal to pace around the front door waiting for a shipment to arrive from B&H? UPS has already missed the 10:30 delivery deadline :hmm:

See, I find this all very interesting and clever. Do you see any issues with the way products are styled, or do you think is all a natural part of the trade?

I spent the better part of 5am tossing around in bed, wide awake but refusing to get up. I Reached for the phone, loaded up Facebook (yes, I still play on Facebook) and started to browse around when I came across a link to an article that really caught my attention.

"Motor Oil On Your Pancakes, Shampoo In Your Cereal…" (original article)

The article talks about a few tricks that are used by the "advertising" and "marketing types" to enhance the images, such as image manipulation and staged products (using motor oil to simulate honey or syrup and microwaved tampons to simulate the steam of hot food), but one statement really seemed to bother me:

Which brings me to some questions, or pardon the pun, food for thought:

1. As photographers, professional or otherwise, what are your thoughts on common elements of photography such as product (model) staging, the use of specialty lenses and image manipulation? Aren't all images manipulated in one way or other before publishing?

2. Do you see image manipulation and "camera tricks" as deceitful when it comes to advertising? When photographing a wedding and retouching the blemishes of the bride?

3. What are some "tricks of the trade" that you have used, or have seen used, when it comes to photography; either in relation to advertising, publications, professional services, et cetera?

Macro Macro Filter Project

OK, so this may not be true macro-photography in the purest sense, but it was a quick and fun little project.

I recently came across a Tamron Adaptall-2 80-210mm that should have been retired long ago. Not wanting to trash it completely, the original owner handed it over for me to 'play' with. He swore up and down he didn't want it back, so I took the liberty of breaking it down to "see what I could see". For the quick and easy solution, I came up with a macro filter using the second interior element and an old UV filter ring.

Image 1 - SMC Pentax-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL Kit Lens

Image 2 - SMC Pentax-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL Kit Lens with homemeade macro filter

That poor little 50mm has been through some rough times...

I'll try and confirm as I had planned a trip to both the Owls Head Museum and the Seal Cove Museum when I visit Bucksport later in July.

I did notice that the MG is no longer listed in their gallery, but I know that not all of the vehicles are listed in the galleries.

Beautiful cars! I am kind of a car nut(case)... The mosquito, Midge, is the unofficially adopted MG mascot as shown on the MG VA Tickford Drophead in the background; however, it was only meant for the 1935 MG "P" Types and was later offered as "obtainable from all MG Agents". The Peggy cap is aftermarket and not specific to MG as a manufacturer and is either a reproduction or was received as a gift from Mobil Oil.

Still beautiful no matter how you look at it. I was just sad to hear that the Saloon is no longer on display a the Owls Head Museum :(
