Parsimony: extreme unwillingness to spend money or use resources. "Resources", in this case, being words.

Apologies for being abstruse.

The cards are similar insofar as they both are SD Card format, and they communicate wirelessly by hardware conforming to the wi-fi standard (IEEE 802.11 or whatever it is). To that extent, they are basically the same technology.

Eye-fi and Flucard do also both offer broadly similar end-user functionality, but are otherwise quite different pieces of hardware. They are not simply different brands of "wi-fi card" - for that, I don't believe there is actually any standard.

I agree that the manual (at least the English translation) is not well worded in its description of the wireless function, and is open to misinterpretation. The whole manual, in my opinion, suffers from brevity to the point of parsimony.

wizofoz, my K3 behaves the same as yours with the standard Flu-card (the 8Gb card supplied by CRK).

However, I do not believe that there exists a fault with either my K3 or the Flu-card. The card operates "agnostically" of the camera via view and delete operations - it works the same in my K-3 as it does in my K10D. Can you clarify how you expect your K3 to operate with the standard Flu-card?

Eye-fi and Flu are not just different brands of card, they are different technology. In my understanding, the cards which the K3 will actually recognize are the Eye-fi and the O-FC1.

I believe that the standard Flu-card works as advertised, and that your camera is fine.

Can't Get the Firmware Update to Work

This ^^^^

If there is an existing firmware in the location where you extract the new firmware, it is possible that the newly extracted firmware is being automatically renamed rather than over-writing the earlier firmware. The firmware placed on the SD card needs to be named fwdc220b.bin or it won't be recognized.

Also, my experience is that you do not need a blank SD card. Just make sure that the firmware is placed in the root directory (ie outside the DCIM folder). The recommendation for a blank card may be more for protection of images than anything else.

Try setting the camera to X. The shutter will lock in at 1/180 and you should be able to vary the aperture.

I would like information about the K3's Mirror Up (MUP) shooting mode.

I understand the operation and benefit of mirror lockup.

However, can someone describe how the MUP shooting mode would be used in preference to the 2 second (or 3 second remote) delay mode?

Coming from a K10D, this is one aspect of the K3 I haven't quite understood.

Pete,

Referencing the first shot, did you use a remote shutter release and switch off shake reduction? This could be significant with a relatively longer exposure time of 1/5 second.

I am happy to go through the basics as long as the advanced features are comprehensively covered as well!

It is almost an insult to the K3 for Ricoh to provide such scant documentation.

Maybe worth trying the free and cross-platform Raw Therapee, a least as an interim measure until the commercial players release their next round of updates.

Raw Therapee does seem to handle the K-3 DNG files, but currently won't touch the K-3 PEF.

Problem memory cards

I took delivery of 2 Sandisk Extreme Pro 32Gb cards (95Mb/s) from B&H.

One of these cards is faulty, refusing to format in the K-3, on a Windows 8 PC, and my workhorse Linux PC. Probing the usb bus on my Linux box, the faulty card is reporting its capacity at 30mb.

At $60 a pop, I am not just going to bin the bad one, so I've initiated a warranty claim with Sandisk.

To date, I've used Sandisk products exclusively without issue, so this is very likely one of those occasional aberrations.

K-3 Power-on issue

Are the 2-battery power-up issues immediately apparent? I spent some time yesterday just messing about with K-3 and grip and wasn't able to evoke the power glitch. This was with 2 charged D-LI90 batteries.
